Looking for Dave Chappelle to poke fun at the white NAACP leader who faked her Black identity? Sorry, but that may not happen in the near future.

Yesterday the comedian came to Washington D.C. to give a commencement address at his high school, the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, and briefly touched on the topic. During the graduation ceremony he made a few remarks about Rachel Dolezal, the Spokane NAACP chapter president who is accused of falsifying her racial identity. He used her story to demonstrate why artists are needed in the world, trying to find the reasoning behind a white woman pretending to be Black.

After the ceremony though, Chappelle said he would refrain from joking about the situation. At least for now.

“I’m probably not going to do any jokes about her or any references to her for awhile,” Chappelle told the Washington Post. He described the situation as having nuances, and that a lot will be revealed about her if Dolezal publicly addresses the matter. The decision to censor himself was surprising, given his comedy routines about race.

Earlier today Dolezal resigned as president of the NAACP’s Spokane chapter. Other celebrities like Cher along with Raven Symone and Whoopi Goldberg spoke about Dolezal:
