Rachel Dolezal, the Spokane NAACP Chapter president who has allegedly lied about her racial identity, has stepped down from the position.

The news was announced on the Spokane NAACP Chapter’s Facebook page with a post that was apparently written by Dolezal herself. “It is with complete allegiance to the cause of racial and social justice and the N.A.A.C.P. that I step aside from the presidency,” she says in the statement. Dolezal largely discussed the work of her chapter, but did not say if she was resigning from the NAACP altogether. She does not address in the post her racial identity or her relationship with her parents. The vice president of the chapter, Naima Quarles-Burnley, will now become president.

Dolezal has been in the headlines since her parents revealed on Thursday that she had no Black ancestry. Some Spokane residents had suspected her background was fake, but it was after local news stations pressed her recently that the story went viral. It is not known how long she had been doing this or when she became estranged from her family. She was also teaching classes as a Africana Studies professor at Eastern Washington University.

She was supposed to meet with the chapter today to address the matter. An email exchange between Dolezal and other members revealed she wanted to postpone the meeting, but a board member stated she did not have the power to do so. The NAACP had released a statement last week defending her work.
