Chuck Brown, the singer and guitarist known as the “Godfather of Go-Go,” a style of music similar to funk that was popularized in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., will be featured on this week’s Unsung episode on TV One.

Brown led a turbulent life, filled with poverty and crime. He didn’t graduate from high school, and was convicted of assault in the 1950s when he served three years in prison. It was while he was in prison that he learned to play the guitar. Once he was released, he played in clubs around D.C. Eventually, the legend in the making became the name and face of the Go-Go. He died in 2012 at the age of 75, due to complications from sepsis.
