Marvel has been making some major changes in its character line-up over the last year or two in an effort to diversify several franchises at once. Last July. the iconic comic book publisher revealed that the new Captain America front man, the Falcon, is an African-American superhero from Harlem, and then in October they ushered in a female Thor. Now, the New York Daily News reports that when Marvel relaunches Spider-Man this fall fans will get to see biracial Miles Morales as the character behind the mask.

Morales, whose father is Black and mother is Puerto Rican, replaced Peter Parker in an alternate comic franchise called Ultimate Spider-Man back in 2011 following the in-plot death of the longtime mainstay. According to news released earlier today, the replacement is going mainstream as the legit Spider-Man later this year.

“Our message has to be it’s not Spider-Man with an asterisk, it’s the real Spider-Man for kids of color, for adults of color and everybody else,” Brian Bendis, the co-creator of Ultimate Spider-Man told the Daily News. “Many kids of color who when they were playing superheroes with their friends, their friends wouldn’t let them be Batman or Superman because they don’t look like those heroes but they could be Spider-Man because anyone could be under that mask,” Bendis also said. “But now it’s true. It’s meant a great deal to a great many people.”

For now Miles is stuck in the comics, but it seems like the change of tide is bound to jump off the page and into theaters at some point down the line.
