Several years ago, some people said that Serena Williams would never be in this position: winning her 21st grand slam, completing the “Serena Slam” (non-calendar year grand slam) for a second time, and being one tournament away from a true calendar slam. Oh, how wrong they were.
The pressure of history could have gotten to her, but Serena was not having it and took care of business with Garbiñe Muguruza 6-4, 6-4. Serena looked unstoppable in her last few matches, and steadily found that momentum in the Wimbledon finals match after a shaky start. While Muguruza had once defeated Serena at a grand slam, it was not in a finals match where the pressure motivates Serena and usually crushes her opponents. With $3 million being rewarded to her today, she has now officially earned more than $70,000,000 in her career.
This win only helps with solidifying her as the greatest tennis player of all time. She has now become the oldest player to ever win a grand slam. But basking in the glow of victory is not her main objective. Her mind is already thinking about defending her title as last year’s U.S. Open champion, and completing a calendar slam in the process for her first time. At the same time though, she prefers to not weigh herself down with big expectations. For Serena, playing tennis on the highest level is perhaps the greatest joy for her.
