Nicki Minaj demands respect, and that’s not a secret. So when she feels slighted, you’ll hear about it. Minaj feels MTV slighted her in the VMA nominations. Now, that’s a bigger story than the nominations themselves.

“Anaconda” or “Feeling Myself” (the TIDAL exclusive) didn’t get the nod for Video of the Year. Instead the nominees are Beyoncé‘s “7/11,” Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud,” Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood,” Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” and Kendrick Lamar‘s “Alright.” A fair list, but “Anaconda,” with its near half a billion YouTube views, is a clear oversight. And again, Nicki Minaj doesn’t like to be oversighted.

Minaj is making a rough argument for being slighted for not being a different “kind” of artist — the Video of the Year nomination list is diverse. That said…

That photo symbolizes why “Anaconda” is an egregious miss: it was a cultural phenomenon when it hit. It broke Vevo’s 24-hour streaming record with 19.6 million (a record that was broken again by “Bad Blood”).

Also, Taylor Swift took offense to Minaj’s viewpoint, perhaps setting up an apocalyptic fight between her rabid fan base and the Barbz.

“Anaconda” is nominated for Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Female Video. Minaj is also coming from winning the BET Award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist for the sixth straight time. Minaj has her accolades, but there may be extra headlines if she does take a Moonman and gets a chance to make an acceptance speech.
