CLOSE

Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) doesn’t come out of hiding a lot. The only occasions grand enough for his presence is a closing guest spot on an A$AP Rocky album and a Kendrick Lamar live performance of “Alright.” We learned about the latter this weekend.

The surprise appearance, recorded by Pigeons & Planes, came at the Osheaga Music Festival in Montreal, where Lamar was the headlining act. Bey was reportedly watching Lamar’s performance from the side of the stage when he invited him to come on stage for “Alright.” He obliged, switching up the future-assuring lyrics to, “We already alright.”

So “Alright” is powerful enough to get Bey on stage and be used as an impromptu protest song, as we saw earlier this week in Cleveland, Ohio. Also, does Bey’s recent appearances mean he’s releasing new material anytime soon? It’s been six years since The Ecstatic dropped.
