Straight Outta Compton set a high standard for the hip-hop biopics that will follow it. Meanwhile, the Tupac Shakur biopic is just trying to get off of the ground.

Collider reports that Benny Boom, who’s directed music videos and one poorly received theatrical release to his name, now has the reins. This comes after John Singleton (Boyz n the Hood), Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) and Carl Franklin (Devil in a Blue Dress).

There’s very little about the movie’s production that inspires much confidence. With his exit, Singleton posted on Instagram that, “The people involved aren’t really respectful of the legacy of Tupac.” Plus, the production must commence before the end of the year before music rights go back to Afeni Shakur.
