In an interview with Q93.3 in New Orleans Rick Ross attempts to clear up the meaning of the “U.O.E.N.O” lyrics where he says he drugs a woman’s drink before taking her home and having sex with her.

At the 4:25 mark of the interview Ross is asked about the record and said the following:

“There are certain things you can’t Tweet and certain things you want people to hear and I want to make sure this is clear..woman is the most precious gift known to man. You understand. There was a misunderstanding with a lyric or a misinterpretation. The term rape wasn’t used. I would never use the term rape in my records. Hip-Hop don’t condone that, the streets don’t condone that. Nobody condones that. I just want to reach out to all the queens on my timeline, the beautiful ladies that were reaching out to me…we don’t condone rape and I’m not with that.”

Some of my peers have dedicated lengthy and articulate responses to the record but I’m going to keep this brief for Rick Ross’s apologists and Ross.

The issue is not the TERM “rape” or if he used the word “rape” in the song. The issue is that what he described doing, drugging a woman to have sex with her so that she “doesn’t even know it,” is RAPE. Period. And the fact that he doesn’t equate that with rape is not a misunderstanding, it is the FUNDAMENTAL issue at hand.

For anyone still confused, what Ross described was not seduction. It was not romance. It wasn’t “loosening” her up. It was forced intercourse. FORCED. If it walks like a rape and talks like a rape it’s a rape!

And for all you apologists bringing up other rap songs and lyrics that does not excuse this instance. You can’t justify ignorance and disregard in one example by saying it has happened before.

But if you still want to spar let’s say this: When Tyler The Creator or Action Bronson recite misogynistic fantasies or butcher a woman in a music video they don’t misrepresent it as romance. You can still take issue with it (as I do) but they are less dangerous to me than someone who thinks he’s being a pimp when he’s really being a pirate. I know to avoid Tyler (I’m 38 and not his demo, get over it) and most listeners that are uncomfortable with his lyrics know to do the same. But with this plea copping Rick Ross is being the worst kind of wolf in sheep’s clothing. Pun intended for those that get it.

With this attempt at damage control Ross has only proved that his critics were not overreacting and that the culture of rape in this country is real. It is not only the ones lurking in the alleys with weapons waiting to pounce, it is the men who women know that think it’s ok to take sex from them that they need to be concerned about.
