Just goes to prove that hip-hop is the ultimate party Viagra.  Director Baz Luhrmann, known for his opulent, eye-popping  epics (“Moulin Rouge”, “Australia”)  has reimagined F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” with a modern, edgy soundtrack courtesy of Jay-Z.  While most may not see the connection between a 1920’s period movie and rap music, to Luhrmann it was the perfect onscreen marriage. From the beginning, he knew he wanted a hip-hop infused soundtrack, so leading man Leonardo DiCaprio introduced Luhrmann to Jay-Z who was putting the finishing touches on his “Watch The Throne” album.  When Jay played “No Church In The Wild,”  a creative partnership was born.

The Urban Daily caught up with Luhrmann to find out how a certain Jay-Z track (“Ni**as In Paris”)  turned a particular party scene into a borderline raunch fest:

“We were about 20 minutes away from wrapping and we still hadn’t gotten that wild party feel.  The idea of having a wild party was inspired by a book Leonardo’s father gave me called “The Wild Party.” We wanted to go there but weren’t quite sure how to do it.

So we got all the props for the scene and I told the cast ‘Let’s go for it!’  We started with jazz music , there was some pillow fighting and then very loudly I turned on Jay –Z’s  ‘N.I.P.’  and things took off.  There’s a moment you can see in the movie, where a very expensive lamp gets smashed.  My assistant director thought I should shut it down because it was total mayhem- there were clothes coming off.  I told everyone to get in the bedroom and brought a camera inside. That’s how it came to be known as the orgy scene.”

“The Great Gatsby” opens in theaters nationwide Friday May 10th
