What defines a good horror movie? Is it homicidal murderers dismembering their victims with chainsaws? Or aliens using humans as walking incubators?  With “The Conjuring” director James Wan (“Saw”, “Insidious”) uses good old fashioned thrills and chills with the real life story of the Perron family who move into a Rhode Island farmhouse,  only to find that a vengeful group of ghosts aren’t interested in playing house with their new tenants.   The Perrons seek out Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators who are no strangers to things that go bump in the night.

We list three reasons “The Conjuring” will have you sleeping with the lights on afterwards:

3.  Beware The Annabelle Doll!

In one of the film’s creepiest scenes, The Warrens come to the aid of two female nursing students with an unwanted supernatural guest.  A seemingly innocent doll becomes the girls’ worst nightmare when it decides it wants to take a more permanent residence in the human realm.

2.  “The Conjuring” Taps Into Your Deepest Fears

Screenwriters  Chad and Carey Hayes effectively build up the tone and mood, making every corner and shadow in the Perron house menacing.  While most horror movies rely on gratuitous violence and gore for shock value, “The Conjuring” is a well-crafted throwback to classic Hollywood ghost stories.

1.  It’s Based On A True Story

Ed and Lorraine Warren are paranormal investigators with over five decades of experience fighting the forces of evil. Ed Warren is a noted demonologist and wife Lorraine is a clairvoyant and medium.  They founded the New England Society for Psychic Research,  and have worked on over 10,000 cases of hauntings and demonic possessions during their career.  In addition to the Perron case, the Warrens also consulted on the infamous Amityville haunting.
