Remember the sci-fi movies like “The Matrix,” “The Terminator”  and “I, Robot” where man-made machines are built to help humans, only to turn on them and plot their extinction?

MIT Professor Cynthia Breazeal and her team have begun crowd-funding the development and manufacture of a personalized home assistant called JIBO that can read to your kids, order your food, video-chat with your family and read your voice mails. Basically, if Siri had a 3-way with R2D2 and the bouncing lamp from the Pixar logo, this is what you’d get.

“Artificial Intelligence algorithms learn your preferences to adapt and fit into your life,” it says on their homepage. “Communicates and expresses using natural social and emotive cues so you can understand each other better.”

For a mere $499 the price point is right to surrender your privacy to make your life easier, but the reactions have been mixed. Watch the video below and tell us if this creepy or cool:
