Nicki Minaj’s The Pinkprint was one of her most personal albums and it was filled with lyrics about her break-up from her longtime rumored boyfriend Safaree Samuels. During an interview with Rolling Stone, Minaj spoke about how the break-up fueled her album and life changes.

“One of my goals was to give people a glimpse into my personal life, because it’s something I’ve kept very private,” she said, before revealing some important changes in her life. “I had to learn to do something as simple as sleep alone. I struggled with ‘Do I express these feelings?’ And I decided there’s no reason for me to hide. I’m a vulnerable woman, and I’m proud of that.”

This wasn’t the first heartbreak of her life, however. Nicki also took time during this interview to address a previous relationship and the hardship she endured when she had to have an abortion.

“I thought I was going to die,” she said of finding out she was pregnant as a teen. “I was a teenager. It was the hardest thing I’d ever gone through.”

Her decision to have an abortion at that time, which she said has “haunted” her, has influenced her political stance on the issue.

“It’d be contradictory if I said I wasn’t pro-choice,” she explained. “I wasn’t ready. I didn’t have anything to offer a child.”

Nicki addressed both of these topics on The Pinkprint. Since then, she’s released her film around the album and some behind-the-scenes clips of the movie can be viewed below.
