As 2014 comes to a close and a new year opens its doors, Kendrick Lamar has revealed that he has a new year’s resolution.

“My new year’s resolutions have always failed me so I try to just practice these things on the daily,” he said during an interview with Revolt. Then he revealed his resolution for this year: “This one is just not being stagnant.”

Why is that his resolution? Kendrick went on to explain that he understands that need to not be stagnant because he knows it’s easy to not strive for change.

“Man hates change,” he said. “But everything is subject to change. Everything has to evolve. Me getting out of my own habits and out of my own way, understanding that, that’s something I gotta practice.”

In fact, Kendrick said this may explain why people love his work so much.

“I think that’s why people gravitate towards my music,” he continued. “I’m trying to figure it out just like everybody else in the world. It don’t come off as I’m telling you what to do.”

If all goes as planned, Kendrick won’t have time to be stagnant next year. He is currently prepping the release of his next project, which is a follow-up to his critically acclaimed major label debut, good kid, m.A.A.d. city.
