A shooting in South Carolina  at one of the most historic and largest Black churches in the nation has left at least nine people dead with the suspect still at large.

According to multiple reports, a gunman opened fire at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina just after 9 p.m. The gunman has been described by police as a white male in his 20s who was wearing a gray hoodie, jeans and Timbaland boots when he suddenly ambushed the church and began shooting.

Local Charleston pastor Thomas Dixon tells CNN, “It’s really bad. It’s a very bad scene. Apparently the person just entered the church and opened fire. That part has not been fully articulated on what happened yet … they are still looking for the suspect.”

Emmanuel AME is the oldest AME church in the south and the congregation was reportedly holding their weekly Bible study service at the time of the shooting. We will continue to keep you updated on this tragic story as more details emerge.
