Tensions have just about reached their peak surrounding the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina statehouse in light of the recent Emmanuel AME shooting that saw a racist 21-year-old white man take lives of 9 innocent Black people during a weekly Bible study and one brave Black woman decided she’d had enough early Saturday morning.
30-year-old activist and educator Bree Newsome of Charlotte, North Carolina has quickly become a heroine among many this morning as photos of her climbing to the top of the South Carolina statehouse to remove the Confederate flag have gone viral. Upon completing her mission Bree returned to ground level, handed the flag to authorities and was arrested without incident ….all while smiling for the cameras.
She had this to say in statement on her decision to remove the flag, according to the Washington Post:
“We removed the flag today because we can’t wait any longer. We can’t continue like this another day. It’s time for a new chapter where we are sincere about dismantling white supremacy and building toward true racial justice and equality.
Bree’s act of bravery is currently being praised and celebrated on Twitter under the hashtag #FreeBree.
