Black NYPD Officer Dies After Being Shot In East Harlem

An NYPD officer has died after he was shot in the head while chasing a gunman in East Harlem on Tuesday.

Randolph Holder was a 33-year-old Guyanese immigrant who was only on the job for five years. His unfortunate death marks the fourth NYPD officer killed in the past ten months, the NY Daily News reports.

Officer Holder and his partners received word of gunshots in Harlem around 8:30 p.m. While en route, the officers saw a man on a bicycle on East 120th Street and Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive. Both parties began to exchange gunfire and Officer Holder was struck in the head.

The incident began when officers zoned to the Police Department’s housing unit heard the gunshots at a park near 105th Street and First Avenue. A bystander told the police that a man had taken his bicycle at gunpoint, and cops tracked down the gunman, who began firing when the police arrived. The suspect was shot in the leg when he was finally arrested near East 124th Street.

He received medical care from New York-Presbyterian and is said to be released into police custody Wednesday morning, Commissioner Bill Bratton said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association president Pat Lynch also spoke at a press conference just after midnight. “We need your support,” Lynch said. “We need your support every day, on every corner, in every neighborhood, so we can continue to carry ourselves like superheroes, so we can save you.”
