This is one of those stories you start out telling your friends, “I can’t make this stuff up!”

Abe “Honest Abe” Hagenston, a homeless man in Detroit who lives under the 8 Mile Overpass on I-75, has declared himself the “first homeless man to accept credit card donations.”

Hagenston, 42, is able to take credit card payments with a square card reader from square.com on his cell phone. If you are wondering how he keeps a cell phone, he credits Pastor Bob of the First United Methodist Church.

“My business is being homeless, now homeless is my business,” he told Kamal Smith of HOT 107.5’s HOT TV in Detroit.

Honest Abe has been homeless for seven years in Detroit but says he makes a living utilizing his digital tools to solicit odd job opportunities on his business website and street donations, which now include all major credit cards.
