New York Giants fullback Nikita Whitlock and his family came home Tuesday night and discovered that thieves stole several items and left behind racist graffiti, CBS News New York reports.

Whitlock said he quickly covered up a swastika scrawled on a wall so that his young children wouldn’t see it. He and his wife, Ashley, soon discovered the message “Go back to Africa” and “KKK” written on other walls of their New Jersey apartment.

“It just re-establishes that no matter where you are, no matter who you are, this can happen to you,” he told CBS.

Jewelry and video game systems were stolen, as well as their sense of security, Ashley stated. This is the second time that someone broke into their home.

She added: “It’s very disgusting actually, it’s very disheartening. You hear about things that do happen, but you never think ‘Oh, this is going to happen to me.’”

Evan R. Bernstein of the Anti-Defamation League called the incident “unconscionable and a cowardly act.”

“It is deeply concerning to see such a searing attack, apparently intended to intimidate and instill fear and one that has the potential to make individuals feel highly vulnerable and insecure,” he said.
