Laid back, witty and direct, Derek Luke is as composed off-camera as he is on. Still early in his career, Luke has managed to snag top roles and appear in some of the most memorable films and shows of the previous decade. Antwone Fisher, Glory Road and Notorious are only a few of his many acting conquests.

Now, in a pursuit to continue living outside of the movie box, Luke is furthering his television career via season three of TNT’s medical drama ‘HawthoRNe,’ premiering June 14. Already an actor who has broken genre barriers of TV, film and beyond, Luke shares his recent experiences, short-term goals and hopes for the future.

You were previously involved in another medical show, ‘Trauma’. Was ‘HawthoRNe’ something you always wanted to do or did it just happen?

In film, I hadn’t yet had a lot of offers to play a doctor, so it’s actually really cool getting this chance. As I continued doing film, some characters like playing a doctor became consistent in TV. I believe a medical show is such a good structure for television.

What are you anticipating most regarding season three of ‘HawthoRNe’?

I’m anticipating the quote from TNT (laughs). No, I’m anticipating the new characters, faces and a great storyline. The storyline as far as my character touches on being on a professional, a father and a husband at the same time. I’m looking forward to addressing topics like that and just having fans and audiences respond to situations that are perhaps true to them.

You play a surgeon on the show. What was the most difficult thing about preparing for your role?

One of the most difficult things about ‘HawthoRNe’ in general was when I signed up the show was already in the process of filming. As soon as I said yes, I had less than a week to actually prepare.

It was exciting and organic because I had to prepare as I went. It was just fun working on the human body. We had scenes where we did different medical procedures and I learned so much about the human body and the sophistication of it. It’s really like a computer than man has been unable to duplicate.

The homie Jasmine Brand hipped me to rarely seen footage of Tupac Shakur and photographers discussing album art concepts for Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, his fifth and final studio album he recorded before his untimely death in 1996. The almost 15 minute video is all cigarettes and future rap history to a All Eyez On Me soundtrack as ‘Pac flips though photo books and photographer Dave LaChapelle and another gentleman talk art direction. The last fourth of the video shows the infamous 2Pac bathroom shots being captured.

On working with Tupac photographer Dave LaChapelle stated:

“Tupac was great, he was very sensitive and is truly a good person. I wrote to his mum when he died and she sent me flowers and gave me his last song, “Ghetto Gospel.” When we did the shoot, he had just come out of prison and every shot has a reason, it’s never random, so this was the idea of the photo shoot, him becoming clean. He had given this interview when he was still in prison and he really opened up and was so honest. I had read it and thought it was so truthful so for the work I did with him, there was this idea of washing away and rebirth. And we did another shoot where he posed as a slave on a cotton field. They traced rapping and rhyming to “call and repeat” during slavery time in sugar cane and cotton fields to pass the time. It’s on the Hotel Lachapelle book. Tupac came to the shoot 2 hours early, which was very unusual for a rapper. So I wasn’t ready for the shoot and he didn’t care. He reminded me of my black friends whom I went to art schools with, he was so cool, open-minded and chill. He wasn’t judgemental. Then later on, I found out that he had gone to an art school. He left behind a big bag of socks and underwear because he had just come out from prison and never picked it up. He died shortly after. I still wear his socks sometimes (laughs).”

One of the highlights of the upcoming 78-minute film, fittingly entitled “The Wonder Year”, has to be one that features 9th Wonder’s estranged former Little Brother group mate and close friend Phonte giving a rare yet revealing insight into the man and their previously fractured relationship. “The Wonder Year” is slated to drop this year.

Atlanta rapper YC wastes no time making moves. In between his trek from Ohio to the Carolinas we caught up with the “Racks” rapper, better known as Universal Republic’s newest signee. Riding high on a hip-hop wave caused largely in part to his radio smash, YC let us in on his big break, new projects and hopes to go platinum.

Where did the name YC come from?

The name YC came from my real name Chris. When I started rapping, I just used Yung Chris. Of course there’s Young Chris from the Young Gunz, but there was a conflict so I went to YC.

Did it upset you at all, not being able to use the name?

I wanted Yung Chris, but I gotta respect the fact that he had it before me. According to trademark or whatever, I can’t do anything with it, so I had to change my name.

Is rap something you always wanted to do or did it just happen?

Coming up, I’ve been the type of person [to think] If I put my mind to something I can do it. Growing up I listened to a lot of music, but when you’re nine years old, you never think that someone’s going to find you. I’ve always done [music], but until I got old enough to learn how to do things I started taking it more serious.

So after months of unconfirmed speculation about Wale being dropped from Interscope after only one album the DC rapper may have a new music home, and a new “Bawse”.

Wale denied being dropped from Interscope on Twitter way back in February, but in recent flurry of tweets Mr. Folarin suggests that he may have inked a deal to join Rick Ross’ Maybach Music imprint.

A source, who wished to not be identified, from within Wale’s camp denies that the rapper signed to Rick Ross’ label and that he is still signed to Interscope. The source said that Wale did spend some time in Miami building with Rick Ross recently. Wale has plans to make smoother, more radio-friendly urban records like “No Hands” and Rick Ross’ “Maybach Music” and he’s hopeful that he can get some help in that department by linking up with Ross.

According to the source, Wale is actively scouring for a new recording home because he’s visibly not happy with Interscope, the label that he’s currently signed to. So maybe news of a deal between Wale and Rick Ross isn’t too far off.

ABC Nightline News did a recent feature that shined a bigger light on Oakland turf dancing, a Bay area street cultural dance that combines forms of breakdancing and continues California’s phenomenal history of artistic street dancing such as pop and locking, krumping and jerking.

The news show highlights a powerful and beautifully choreographed online video called “Turf Dancing in the Rain” in which some Oakland boys mourn the loss of one of their brothers by doing a rainy day turf dance on the same corner that he was killed. The video has close to two million views.

Popular rap websites Onsmash.com and Rapgodfathers.com have been shut down by the feds in what appears to be linked to a wide-reaching federal crackdown on online piracy of music and movies. The two sites were popular with Hip-Hop heads as go-to destinations to download new music.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, seized the sites on Friday along with a handful of other torrent sites and replaced them with a notice that read: “This domain name has been seized by ICE – Homeland Security Investigations, pursuant to a seizure warrant issued by a United States District Court.”

According to the New York Times:

“Among the domains seized were torrent-finder.com and those of three sites that specialized in music: onsmash.com, rapgodfathers.com and dajaz1.com. TorrentFreak, a news blog about BitTorrent – a file-sharing system that has tended to elude the authorities because it is decentralized – said that at least 70 other addresses had been seized, most belonging to sites related to counterfeit clothing, DVDs and other goods.”

Expect sites like On Smash to come back in some form or fashion because shortly after news broke @OnSmash tweeted this:

During a recent interview with NBC news anchor Matt Lauer George, former president George W. Bush admits that, more than anything else, it’s a remark by Kanye West that ranks as one of the worst moments of his presidency, according to excerpts of the interview released on Tuesday night.

The interview, which airs on Monday at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, touches on comments made by the Chicago rapper during a 2005 live NBC telethon to benefit Hurricane Katrina victims in which Kanye went off script to famously say that “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people.”

MATT LAUER: About a week after the storm hit NBC aired a telethon asking for help for the victims of Katrina. We had celebrities coming in to ask for money. And I remember it vividly because I hosted it. And at one part of the evening I introduced Kanye West. Were you watching?

MATT LAUER: You remember what he said?

PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH: Yes, I do. He called me a racist.

MATT LAUER: Well, what he said, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”

MATT LAUER: This from the book. “Five years later I can barely write those words without feeling disgust.” You go on. “I faced a lot of criticism as President. I didn’t like hearing people claim that I lied about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction or cut taxes to benefit the rich. But the suggestion that I was racist because of the response to Katrina represented an all time low.”

PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH: Yeah. I still feel that way as you read those words. I felt ‘em when I heard ‘em, felt ‘em when I wrote ‘em and I felt ‘em when I’m listening to ‘em.

MATT LAUER: You say you told Laura at the time it was the worst moment of your Presidency?

PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH: Yes. My record was strong I felt when it came to race relations and giving people a chance. And– it was a disgusting moment.

Kanye West’s comment — which was made, ironically, on NBC during a telethon fundraiser for victims of Hurricane Katrina – quickly became an indelible moment of Bush’s second term. And while it was obviously rare and off-putting for a rap star to insist that the president didn’t care about black people, it’s also somewhat unexpected that that would be Bush’s personal, political nadir.

It’s Howard University Homecoming 2010! And with that said, here’s a throwback vid of the guys who helped make the world’s most famous homecoming the most attended Black event in the country.

Former HU alum and then-fledging music exec Sean “Puffy” Combs used HU homecoming to help break his new franchise artist The Notorious B.I.G in the early 1990s.

This video, captured in 1995, is shows a young Foxy Brown giving hugs, a young Biz Markie DJing and a young Biggie and Puff chilling in front of the Blackburn building and getting ready to tear down Yardfest.

The lawyer for once-popular video model turned rapper Lola Monroe fired back at Media Take Out for posting an embarrassing story about his client allegedly losing her home and moving in with her Baltimore rapper boyfriend at his parents’ home.

Her attorney, Paul W. Gardner, issued a statement on behalf of his client, while questioning the website’s credibility as a new source, dismissed the story’s claims.

“MediaTakeout.com has a history of erroneous reporting and the story which hit this week continues that trend,” Garner stated. “Previous rumored reports regarding my client have been posted on this website and were found to be untrue. Enough, is enough. Any further attempts to discredit Ms. Monroe will be met with additional legal review.”

In the story, the blog’s anonymous source, who reportedly lives in Lola’s hometown of Washington DC, said the following:

I always thought [Angel Lola Luv] was broke cuz she aint have no car but i gave her the benefit of the doubt cuz she had a nice crib. Get this… Lola got evicted recently!

She has shacked up with [struggling] rapper “Los”, a baltimore artist that was signed to badboy and dropped from the label just as fast. SHE LIVES WITH LOS, HIS PARENTS, ANDDDDD HIS GRANDPARENTS IN THE HOOD IN BALTIMORE!

I’ve always wondered why Kanye never officially teamed up with his Blackstar homies Mos Def and Talib Kweli. They’ve always seemed like a natural fit for each other after seeing how Kweli opened the door for one of the most successful acts in rap today by letting Kanye open up for him on his promotional tour before anybody had any kind of faith in Ye’ the rapper, most only knew him as a uber-talented producer. The artists would make frequent appearances on each other’s album and performances but nothing was ever official.

Talib Kweli has been pretty good at holding it down on his own as an artist and co-owner of his Blacksmith music label while Mos almost abandoned music altogether to become a very credible actor.

All the while, Mos Def the musician, while putting out decent music, was flailing like a man overboard without a life jacket to get his label’s attention Kanye’s G.O.O.D. music artists like Common and John Legend has earned an esteemed place in the music landscape.

Joining the aforementioned, as well as Kid Cudi, Big Sean, Consequence, GLC, Mr Hudson, and the recently added Pusha T of Clipse, Mos Def finally gets to be in the music family that he needs to be in.

“Just as Kanye returned to his roots to scoop up Common, he recently recruited his buddy Brooklyn rapper/singer/actor Mos Def into the GOOD Music fold. Long regarded as a formidable talent by underground devotees and mainstream fans alike, Mos appeared on “Two Words” (from Kanye’s 2005 The College Dropout) and “Drunk and Hot Girls” (from KW’s 2007 Graduation). Jay-Z pulled in $63 million over the past 12 months, earning him his second straight hip-hop cash crown. His income level places him in the 35% tax bracket, which means he’ll pay Uncle Sam about $22 million this year–a sum greater than the total earnings of any other rap star besides second-ranked Diddy.

The top 20 earners on this year’s Cash Kings list racked up about $300 million in earnings, an average of $15 million per artist. Remarkably, the total is roughly the same as last year, despite a troubled economy and a music industry thrown into flux by new technology.

The video for Kanye’s first single off of his anticipated upcoming album, formerly titled Good Ass Job, was expected to be epic. Kanye tweeted that the video wasn’t going to be a video but a “painting.” And it was. A beautiful moving display of art that rung you in with Kanye standing front and center of a platform surrounded by Michaelangelo-inspired figures. But just as you’re about to be enchanted by what looks to be more of Kanye’s next level conceptualization you’re disappointed just as fast. The video only lasts a little more than a minute and cuts off in the middle of the song. Maybe we’ll be blessed with a full clip sometime in the future but, for now, we’re left with this breathtaking teaser of a video.

Are porn tapes the way into Hollywood? Probably not but Laurence Fishburne’s daughter thinks so.

TMZ has reported that Fishburne’s 19-year-old daughter Montana Fishburne is starring in a porno flick under Vivid Entertainment in order to get an entertainment career.

“I’ve watched how successful Kim Kardashian became and I think a lot of it was due to the release of her sex tape,” she told TMZ.

Perhaps her successful actor father wasn’t qualified enough to give her career advice?

Granted, non-Black women like Pamela Anderson, Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian made out pretty nicely by trading sex faces for the camera but how about Black girls that did the same thing? The track record isn’t so great.

The chick that played Judy on Family Matters tried porn. We barely saw her when the show was on. She’d sparingly come down stairs once every 10 episodes. Then one day she stopped coming down stairs but nobody noticed. The next time we seen her was a decade later and she’s doing porn to pay bills. What did she win? She did get a spot on Dr. Drew’s Celebrity Rehab to kick her weed addiction.

Former Playboy model Nicole Narain leaked a XXX tape of her and actor Colin Farrell. He’s a box office favorite and she posed naked for Playboy. That sounds like a recipe to be the Black Pam Anderson except her biggest rake in was also a spot of Dr. Drew’s Celebrity Rehab to cure her sex addiction.

Karrine “Superhead” Steffans, or rather an adult entertainment company, leaked a sex tape of the video vixen. The tape was released after she was already famous from her book about having sex with anybody with a record deal but did nothing to enhance her celebrity. If anything it helped kill whatever little celebrity she had left and maybe helped put a visual to what she wrote about in her books.

The only real success story I can point to of Black people getting more famous releasing a sex tape is Ray J. He went on to become a nicely paid reality star, which allowed him to finally shed the “Brandy’s brother” identity. People still didn’t want to buy his music but they tuned in to watch his shows.

Speaking of which, Caviar, the Black Russian girl from For the Love of Ray J is reportedly doing porn now. So we’ll see if that’ll make people care about her. Probably not.

Very rarely would a NBA video game have Michael Jordan on the game’s roster, let alone a cover. Unless you picked up vintage Sega Genesis copies of Jordan vs. Bird: One on One or Lakers Vs. Celtics you couldn’t play as the greatest player to ever lace up a pair. Don’t ask me how he was the only NBA player whose brand was too big to be included in a video game but he was never included. Granted, you could later make your version of him in the create-a-player feature of certain games but he retired by that point or was the out of shape Washington Wizards Jordan that nobody cared about anymore. The super Jordan I made could do no wrong. He would have ’99′ in every attribute and average 52 points a game. I needed an actual Jordan. One that could still fail and could still get crossed over by a young Allen Iverson.

But fret no more, the self-proclaimed greatest basketball video game of all time pulled the unthinkable– they got his airness to cover their upcoming game NBA2K11.

This isn’t a pixelated owner standing on the sideline in a suit while you play his Charlotte Bobcats Jordan. This is vintage Jordan, the stick his tongue out and bang on you then give you the shoulder shrug guy.

NBA 2K11 will feature a Jordan Challenge Mode that will let you relive ten classic Jordan moments such as Mike’s game winning shot against the Jazz to win the Bull’s sixth ring, the Finals game against the Jazz where he scored 38 with the flu and the time he scored 55 wearing the number 45 following his brief first retirement (click here for a full listing The Ten Games of NBA 2K11′s “Jordan Challenge“).

There has been little reported on what other features the upcoming game will have as of now but we’ll report more as NBA 2K11′s Oct. 5 release date draws near.

As we patiently wait for Lupe Fiasco to release his anticipated Lasers album we get a beam up with the Chi-Town rapper giving Rick Ross’ “B.M.F.” track  a positive spin. So instead of promoting the nihilistic idea of blowing one’s money fast Lupe wants to build minds faster.

Boston Celtics center Glen Davis decided to get in front of the camera to teach us how to Dougie. I thought he was injured?  Anyway, it’s nothing worse than seeing a 6’9″ 300 pound grown ass 24-year-old man get all feminine with it like he’s a 16-year-old in skinny jeans.

The NBA should put out a league wide mandate prohibiting their players from making Youtube videos because it always turns out bad. In Big Baby’s case it’s John Amaechi bad.
