For those who aren’t sports fanatics, the reason they tune into the Super Bowl is for the commercials. The ads were a little weak this year, which made it easy to pick favorites. The Urban Daily decided to highlight five of the best commercials of the 2012 Super Bowl. Sorry, ladies, David Beckham’s H&M ad did not make this list. I feel like I need to throw a “pause” somewhere in here for even mentioning it.

After a long hiatus from the spotlight, Andre 3000 has returned to the public’s radar in Gillette’s Fusion ProGlide Styler. Andre Benjamin co-stars in the “Masters of Style” campaign with Oscar winner Adrien Brody and actor Gael Garcia Bernal. For Andre’s spots, he rocks a plethora head gear such as a bowler hat, a beret, and the viking helmet. In an interview for Gillette, he shares he hasn’t been to a barbershop in three years, preferring to groom himself in his own abode.

Besides bring a Grammy winning R&B superstar, John Legend is a huge sports fan. He made an appearance on First Take where he sang a parody of his signature ballad, “Ordinary People.” Legend changed the lyrics to reference Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith’s constant debates about Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow. John Legend basically said everything sports fans were thinking. Yes, Tebow’s wins come out of nowhere, but we don’t want to hear about that on every show. There are other players, like the ones who made it to the Super Bowl.

The moment people found out Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger were fired from their judging duties on the American version of The X Factor, speculation began about who was going to take their spots. Nicki Minaj and Kelly Rowland’s names were tossed around. But one name had the internet going nuts. Mariah Carey was said to have been taking a seat at the judging table, however, Nick Cannon believes his wife is too legendary to do such a thing.

Cannon gave a quote to EW, saying:

“Like Nicole Scherzinger, my wife is not a fan of judging people. Nicole actually did say that she is used to performing, and the judging thing is not really natural for her. I really think that a lot of entertainers feel that way and I think these shows are really good shows, but when you get someone of status, or just big-time, career-wise, to do these shows, I personally think it’s a step down.”

“Why would would my wife want to be on a show like that? For somebody who has a legendary career, I don’t know why they would do that.”

Mariah Carey has hit legendary status. She does have more number ones than any artist except The Beatles. On the other hand, Mariah’s last few albums haven’t performed as well as others. So being in everyone’s homes on a constant basis might boost sagging sales. Would you watch The X Factor if Mariah Carey became a judge on the show?

Now that Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger have been fired from “The X Factor,” it’s being reported that Mariah Carey and Kelly Rowland may be replacing them as judges on the Fox singing competition show. Mariah Carey was rumored to be a part of season one, but that never happened. And Kelly Rowland was previously a judge on the U.K. edition of “The X Factor.”

Simon Cowell, the lead judge and executive producer of “The X Factor,” has made comments in the past about wanting more star power on the judges panel. Do you think Mariah Carey and Kelly Rowland would be good additions?

5 Reasons To Watch “Southland”

Just two episodes into the fourth season of TNT’s underrated hit cop drama Southland, viewers are already buzzing about it. From its perfect casting and its unapologetically brazen appeal, the show has easily picked up right where shows like Brooklyn Heights and New York Undercover left off. Here are five reasons you need to be watching it:

Regina King: Let’s face it; she’s really the reason to watch anything. But in Southland, the veteran actress has found her niche as the tough yet compassionate Detective Lydia Adams. She’s smart, real, and not afraid to speak her mind, but never at the expense of becoming that “angry black woman.” In essence, she’s that roundaway girl ladies would want to grab a drink with, and that intellectual woman that men can bring home to mama.

It’s one of the best shows you may not be watching: In 2009, NBC discarded this gritty cop drama from its lineup after not airing a single episode of its five completed, reportedly claiming the show was too dark for their 9pm time slot. But one network’s trash is another’s treasure. TNT was more than happy to pick up this flailing drama in January 2010, where it can still be seen today. This is the one of the best dramas on TV. It’s time to prove to NBC how big a mistake they made in letting it go.

Black star power: Raise your hand if you can think off the top of your head how many cop series there have been featuring a black woman as the lead. Right, not many. Too few, actually. Usually the black actress is downstairs in the lab, quickly dragging the body in, or the hardened commissioner. Detective Adams is center stage, hitting the streets, running after vicious criminals and asking the tough questions. You’ve got to love a show that doesn’t hide its best talent from the central storyline.

Lucy Liu: Kick starting what will hopefully be a long stint on the series, film star Lucy Liu has joined the show this season as Officer Jessica Tang. And, just as you’d expect, the always spot-on action star fits right into the show’s brassy format we’ve all come to know and love. Right out the gate, the actress is kicking butt and taking names, and already has the male-dominated squad appropriately shook. Adding Liu just seemed like a natural progression, and it’s good to be able to watch her now each week.

Because it’s good: Southland is like a wild animal you can’t tame and are slightly frightened by, but you’re so hypnotized by its every movement from one scene to the next that you can’t turn away. Ferocious and mean but so smart and authentic, the show will make you forget you’re watching network television with its cleverly censored format. Just like when you listen to a radio edit of your favorite jam, you still know what they’re really saying, and you love them even more because of it.

Simon Cowell doesn’t play when it comes to business. When it comes to the American version of The X Factor, that has become the hard truth. After firing stale host, Steve Jones, Cowell has given Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger their walking papers.

According to reports, Cowell felt the former Pussycat Doll “lacked personality” for American television. Simon’s reasons for axing his friend, Paula Abdul because of the cold response she got from audiences.

As for L.A. Reid, he will remain judge. Reid has become Cowell’s biggest adversary when it comes to critiques. L.A. Reid being head honcho of Epic Records, the label to sign the winner to a five million dollar contract doesn’t hurt either.

Last night an unknown man went to Kim Kardashian‘s house in Beverly Hills with luggage intending to stay with her, and police were called. He was not able to gain access to Kim’s home because of the gate, but told security he was there to work on her reality show.

Getting to the Super Bowl is the goal of every football team in the NFL. While football fans are excited for the game alone, many people watch the game for other reasons. Viewers also tune into the game for the commercials and the halftime show.

Doing Big D During Super Bowl Weekend

The Super Bowl halftime show has become a much ballyhooed fifteen minute performance in which some great performers deliver spellbinding sets and others simply embarrass themselves.

The Urban Daily wanted to take a look back at some of the best Superbowl halftime shows ever done. Hit us in the comments and tell us who should have made the list. Feel free to leave your predictions of how well Madonna, Nicki Minaj, and Cee-Lo Green will do at this year’s game featuring the Giants and the Patriots.

5. Nsync, Aerosmith, Britney Spears, Nelly, and Mary J. Blige - Super Bowl XXV (2001)

In 2001, you’d have been hard pressed to find a boy band bigger than Nsync. Fresh off selling two million copies of their album in a week, Justin and the others were on top of the world. Aerosmith were experiencing a resurgence in their careers due to their hit, “Jaded,” which led to the two bands collaborating. Britney Spears got to perform simply because she and Timberlake were hot and heavy at the time. Nelly and Mary J. Blige make brief appearances to rock out on “Walk This Way.” Even if you hated bubblegum pop music, you gave it a pass for this electrifying show.

4. Prince – Super Bowl XLI (2007)

Three years after Nipplegate, Prince tore the halftime show up. The Purple One went through some of his tamer hits and even did an ill rendition of The Foo Fighters’ “Best of You.” Not one to go without any controversy, Prince played a guitar solo during his signature “Purple Rain” where he put up a sheet and simulated self love. Dude gave a showstopping performance in the rain wearing heels and his head scarf. You know how Prince is about his perm.

3. Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake – Super Bowl XXXVIII (2004)

Janet Jackson was on the promotional trail for her album Damita Jo when she hit the Superbowl stage. Being that Janet is the consummate performer, everybody knew she was going to do the damn thing. What we didn’t know was we were going to get a glimpse of her pierced mammary. After running through, “All For You” and “Rhythm Nation,” Timberlake hit the stage for “Rock Your Body.” When he sang, “Better have you naked by the end of this song,” he couldn’t fathom how accurate that lyric would be. Ms. Jackson’s breast caused a lot of women to smack their men for drooling. Who cares if it was a publicity stunt! They also gave birth to the phrase “wardrobe malfunction.”

2. U2 – Super Bowl XXXVI (2002)

The Super Bowl in 2002 was marred by sadness. America was still reeling from the attack on the World Trade Center five months earlier. Legendary rock band U2 made sure the people lost in the attack were not forgotten by projecting the names of every person whose lives were taken on the horrific day. Bono and crew did what they do best; entertain us while slipping in a social message. Well done U2, well done.

1. Michael Jackson – Super Bowl XXVII (1993)

Michael Jackson never just put on a show. He made every performance a spectacle. His 1993 Super Bowl performance was no exception. Using holographic images of himself to make an entrance, Michael had the crowd going wild just by standing still. Once he started singing hits like “Billie Jean,” “Black or White,” and “Jam,” he had the world in the palm of his hand. MJ then made a statement of racial harmony and world peace with “Heal the World.” Long live the king!

Since debuting in 2005, Rihanna has become known for more than her music. After winning Grammys and having eleven numer ones under her belt, Ri Ri is stepping into the world of television production. The Bajan beauty is set to launch a fashion competition reality show, much like Project Runway.

Rihanna will executive produce the as yet untitled show where aspiring fashion designers will be challeneged each week to design an outfit for a different celebrity. The final challenge will be creating clothing for a Rihanna performance in Hyde Park, Britain in July. UK pop star Nicola Roberts will serve as host and the show is scheduled to premiere this summer on Sky Living HD.

Star Jones reportedly fell out with “The View” co-host and producer Barbara Walters, which led to her contract not being renewed by ABC. But Star Jones blindsided Barbara by making an announcement about not returning to “The View” before her then-current contract had actually ended.

He told you that he wouldn’t stop. Sean “Diddy” Combs is set to launch a music themed cable network at the end 2012. Diddy’s new channel is said to be called Revolt and is aiming to go live on 12/12/12.

As in pure Sean Combs fashion, there are some heavy hitters involved. Andy Schuon, who is the former head of MTV Programming, will be apart of the nicely funded business venture. Schuon also was at the head of a music channel named International Music Feed. Diddy and Schuon aim to make Revolt like MTV in its early days with an African-American slant. The two are in talks with Time Warner Cable and Comcast for distribution deal, but nothing has been finalized.

Diddy’s camp hasn’t made any comments about the potential music channel. However, a rep for Time Warner Cable did say there had been “some discussion” about the project.
