(AllHipHop News Special) After the BET Awards, there was a tremendous uproar in the Hip-Hop Community over the lack of dedication to the life of Guru of Gangstarr. Most notably, J-Smooth said via Twitter, “what i learned watching the BET Awards: apparently Chris Brown is completely redeemed, and Guru is completely forgotten.” But, the popular cultural commentator, along with millions of others, were unaware what was truly going on behind the scenes of the heavily watched program.

In this AllHipHop News special, Stephen Hill, BET’s Executive Vice President of Entertainment and Music Programming, explains exactly what happened with Guru, as well as Chris Brown, Jay-Z and Beyonce and more.

AllHipHop.com: There’s quite a bit of buzz going on in particular with the Hip-Hop Community with regards to Guru. He didn’t get a shoutout at the BET Awards over the weekend.

Stephen Hill: In a show that had every few technical glitches, it was nothing more than a technical glitch. It was the same reason you didn’t see anything about Naomi Sims (the first African American supermodel) a Black model who passed, and Marvin Isley of the Isley Brothers. So, Guru, Naomi Sims and Marvin Isley were all tied to this one [ video ] package that didn’t fire off the way it was supposed to. What was supposed to happen is you see this package and Naomi and Guru and and Marvin end up on Gary Coleman. For some reason, we couldn’t get it to fire and it kept Gary Coleman up there a freeze [frame]. That’s why we kept Gary up there as a freeze.

(watch the missing dedication below)

AllHipHop.com: Right, I saw that.

Stephen Hill: That’s why it looks a little awkward when Todd [Bridges] started, because he was supposed to have a bit of a ramp up. So, Todd did his thing and we continued on with Lena and Teddy Pendergrass [dedication]. You can best believe there will be something significant for Guru during the Hip-Hop Awards. We realized there was nothing we could do [during the BET Awards]. We had to keep it moving after that technical glitch. Guru, Naomi Sims and Marvin Isley were all victims of that technical glitch. All extremely influential in different ways.

So did Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye really boycott the show because of Chris Brown?

    Guru wasnt mentioned because he was real hip-hop and bet only cares about pop music. When you got lames like wayne, t.i. soldier boy, jeezy 50 etc gettin plenty of spins while real emcees like Talib Kweli, Mos Def, The Roots etc gettin no play you know they dont give a f**k about hip-hop. They care about pop music.

    People you have to understand that BET is not owned by black people. Get it through you thick skulls. We have nothing for ourselves. I never look at BET because it’s a joke and I mean a joke! Black people here in America, we have to start looking out for ourselves and stop worrying about white folks. Let’s move the hell on. Tired of asking for crumbs from his table. Those days are long gone!

    why is this even an issue?

    1) BET awards? that’s like sambo giving out awards to aspiring sambos;

    2) ‘uproar in the hip hop community’? what the fucc? was there ‘upheaval in the jazz community because BET didn’t name a month after wes montgomery’?

    LOL

    any other NON ISSUES to report?

    So even though there’s a clear video of the dedication that Stephen Hill is talking about, people here still think that Guru was left out on purpose? How is that possible?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SHUG8/ SHUG8

    It’s not that he was left out on purpose….it’s that he wasn’t given his dues by incompetent unappeciative ignorance………SALE out and wake up people ….it ain’t all about black and white…..WAKE the f**k up…..it is an easy distraction to block you from action….ignorance is the enemy…..that is what Guru understood……but, enough of blaming BET…… as consumers we share the responsibility……what was the last CD you bought…….what was the last show you went to?…….support those that are working…..telling the truth….,..building you up……quit buying into the bullshytt!!!!……..f**k BET, but then again …….if we demand more…..perhaps they will deliver……….Peace, Shug

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/billy-danze2/ billy-danze2

    There is a simple reason he was not on. One low level exec asked a high level exec should we do a tribute to the recently passed rapper Guru. The higher level exec asked will the 12-20 year old and female demographics who think lil wayne is the best rapper around know who Guru is?? The lower level exec says “I highly doubt it”. The higher level exec says “don’t bother with it then”.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/easy_one65/ easy_one65

    It’s really simple. BET is not black-owned anymore, and 99% of the executive management staff don’t have a phucking clue as to “who” Guru was nor the contribution he made to the hip-hop culture as one of its innovators…(Thanx, Mr. Johnson!…)

    Second, you got all of these fake-@zz, apologetic people like SHUG8 who help defeat the purpose of honoring his significance with that mumbo-jumbo bullshyt about what Black ought to do…get this: you wouldn’t have hip-hop today if it wasn’t for creative artists like Guru, who emerged during the golden age of hip-hop…

    What’s with the anti BET speak everyday here? It’s really getting old. Watch BET or don’t (like myself) but don’t talk it, live it.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/kaikai7/ kaikai7

    It would be nice if they would do a one hour show on Gangstar and Guru, sort of like UNSUNG and have his friends, family, music label mates, discuss him, his music legacy, his start in music , so that the fans who enjoy his music can see this, and those unfamiliar with it, can get to know what he was about. BET became too one deimensional. They need to step it up some more notches. I realize that they want to focus on what sells m,but don’t totally alienate your original fan base that helped you toget to where you are.

    Bet never really played much gangstarr on their station over the years that had some of the most underated albums in the history of rap music..i cant even watch too many videos now, and i dont even watch BET anymore, the artist that get air time on that station are wack as hell..They better do it big for my man Guru on the hiphop awards he was ahead of his time as a artist…This is off the subject, but to some of you record lables i hope you read this..what the f**k are some of you guys on , some of these artist sound like s**t im sorry, it sucks ,the beat’s sound like s**t and the artist rap about the same stuff all the time…Even the r&B artist sound like garbage it seems like alot of artist is watering down their music and selling out, i cant even listen to new music any more i gotta pull out my old music, but im getting tired of listening to my old music when you mutha f**kas are gonna get it together and make some good music again…anything i buy new is from mix tapes for rap music,Let’s get it right people, let’s start making good music again…

    @stylemaker2020

    I’d say most BLACK people today don’t know hip hop. I’d say 99% of people on BP had no idea who Gangstarr is. Let call it what it is females and the bet target demographic (tennages very early 20s) don’t know what hip hop is.

    Young kids and females have the nerve to call wayne, jeezy and 50 hip-hop and got enough balls to call people like minaj emcees. Sorry to break this to you but its black folks who don’t know hip hop. Mainly its females who are guilty.

    I’d bet you be hard pressed to find any females on here who know one Gangstarr song that has not been mentioned in an article somewhere. Chicks might know some of the singles the group made but dare one of em to name an album cut without looking it up.

    I bet not one of the dudes on here under 26-27 can name the side project that Guru was involved in when Gangstarr was havin problems WITHOUT lookin it up. I bet they didnt even know Guru had side projects to begin wit.

    To say whites don’t know hip hop is probably true but blacks know less about hip hop. As I said females especially. They know commercial packaged rap though, but they dont know hip-hop

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/billy-danze2/ billy-danze2

    @stylemaker2020

    A further showing that females don’t know what hip-hop is. I have so many females I chat with on here ask me what my name means. Anybody who REALLY knows hip-hop will know what/who billy danze is. The fact that so many females ask me what it means shows just how little females know about hip-hop. If i’d used some nickname or phrase that wayne used i bet 98% of people on bp would have caught it).

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AsileeDotCom/ AsileeDotCom

    billy-danze2, I’m sure there as many males; if not more as females who don’t know who Billy Danze is you naive, closed-minded idiot.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AsileeDotCom/ AsileeDotCom

    billy-danze2, music isn’t everything and if the media actually kept the music real a lot of people and not just females like the ones you’re singling out would know who these people are. I know who they are so where is your proof and where the hell are these percentages coming from, the crack of your ass? You should just shut your ill-mannered, sexist, shallow a.ss up.

    A lot of people such as myself don’t even listen to these coon tunes for that simple fact. I stick to what was good and its not even close to Lil’ Wayne. I’ve never been so offended in my life, I’ll never let an idiot piss me off in such a manner again. You are one retarded son of a b.itch. Its not the message in its entity that’s pissed me off it’s your f.ucked up percentage. What makes you so smart or so better than someone else because you think what you’re listening to makes you more significant than anyone else? Music is music and if you let it define you, then you’re destine to fail.

    You’re about as smart as a bag of s**t on fire.

    billy-danze2, you’re a clown in here. So females got to have a badge of honor to prove they know what Hip Hop is? I’m not going to sit here and type up every artist of Hip Hop I have ever enjoyed, but I will say that I’m he11 on not supporting these wack newcomers such as Drake, Nicki Minaj, waka flocka… Maybe the caliber of females you associate with are hoodrats that credit Trina, Wayne, Baby, t.i., Nicki Minaj, Jeezy, Gucci Mane as Hip Hop and may not know about underground acts such as Jean Grae, Pharoahe Monch, Chase Infinite, Edgar Allen Floe nor about the known Hip Hop acts such as Lupe Fiasco, Black Thought (The Roots), Talib Kweli (Hi-Tek & Black Star w/Mos Def), Slum Village, Wale, 9th Wonder (Little Brother), Rah Digga, Q-Tip…. Maybe you should divorce those lame females and get acquainted with some true Hip Hop Headed Females such as myself. Death to commercial Rap, lets Revive Hip Hop while to clings to life support!

    Let’s face it. Even the founder of BET is not supportive of BET. Go figure!

    Frankly as much as I do like black television, I don;t care about the views of anyone station anyhow. Guru was the Jam from the first to the last album. I still support his music in every was since he was for nothing but the positive.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/billy-danze2/ billy-danze2

    @Asilee

    As the old saying goes you protest too much. Nobody would be gettin offended unless the comments applied to them directy. You gettin all upset and resorting to name callin obviously indicates you’re one of the chicks who doesn’t know hip hop because if it didn’t apply to you directly then the response would have been something like “i disagree” but the response you gave shows that it hit home.

    @Jordan

    Do they need a badge of honor? No, but they should know the difference between rap and hip-hop. You can name call and blame this on the media if you want but the want is they provide what people buy and the lion share of album purchases across all genres of music are made by women. Give me a few days and I’ll reply with the soundscan and RIAA data that shows the male to females breakdown of album purchases.

    If women are the majority purchasers, then they are also account for most of the purchases of the waynes and drakes of the world. Based on this, the reason the jeezys and the t.i of the world are selling as much as they are is mainly because of women. Of course men buy albums too but data shows that men do not buy music as much as women (again give me a few days to find the data).

    As far as attacking the type of women I know how about doing a random sample of about 25 women and note down the music they have on their page and see if i’m making this up. It would be simple on a day when you on and not busy just look at 25 pages, (ignoring the ones with no music at all)note how many got wayne, drake etc, and divide that by 25. I’m almost certain the percentage would be 85%+. This way you won’t have to take my word for it and you’ll be able to see it yourself.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Jordan_Mom/ Jordan_Mom

    billy-danze2, I understand where you’re coming from. I just don’t want you to classify all women in one lump sum. I, for one, refuse to buy commercial rap and I am a underground Hip Hop fanatic. It’s like once an underground act goes commercial (i.e. Jay Z, Nas, Busta Rhymes-post Leaders of the new skool, QTip-post Tribe Called Qwest) I just lose interest in them because they’re no longer making music for the art,but for the hype at the music exec’s request for monetary gain. Before I go on, I still consider Q-Tip real Hip Hop though because he’s from a generation of real Hip Hop, I just think at one point he sold out so did Nas with that Oochie Wally blasphemous trash.

    Have you ever considered the fact that the ratio of females buying trash rap (i.e Gucci Mane, Nicki Minaj…) is possibly 80 % teen females and 20% adult females? From what I’ve witnessed, a lot of young girls (15-18) is the higher ratio of fans of these wack rappers. You really can’t fault these little teeny boppers because of course they are not in the know of the real art of Hip Hop. This is the loss generation we’re talking about and that’s our 80%, they need some Hip Hop education. Now the 20% adult females support trash rap need more than Hip Hop counseling, they need to be taught some morals altogether because any grown woman in support of Lil Wayne and the likes who call them b%tches and h0es are loss causes.
