Wyclef Jean

Hip-Hop star Wyclef Jean will announce his bid for the President of Haiti, a source has confirmed with AllHipHop.com exclusively.
Sources close to Wyclef confirmed with AllHipHop.com that the rapper will announce his bid for the country’s highest office next Thursday, on August 5th.

The 37-year-old was born in Haiti, but immigrated to the United States at the age of 9-years-old, when he landed in Brooklyn, before settling in South Orange, New Jersey.

The rapper sprung into action on January 12th, when his native land was leveled by a 7.0 earthquake that left 300,000 people dead over a million others displaced.

The rapper will make his official announcement just two days prior to the country’s August 7th deadline to submit his plan for running for President.

Analysts are predicting that Wyclef Jean will easily win the race with his financial connections, influence among the Haitian youth and his political influence around the world.

Jean, who maintained his status as a citizen of Haiti, was in the country yesterday, where he was preparing for his upcoming campaign.

Elections are slated for November 28th.

hey why not! he loves his country and already has money. so that means: things will get done because they need too! NOT because some has to pay him under the table first…. I think this will be a big step in the right direction for Haiti….good luck Wyclef

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mps2003/ mps2003

    Well, they need him.

And you know things are bad when citizens in a country be saying they want the U.S. to take over: As if they want to give up their right to not be taken.

WELL ONE THING HE HAS THE MONEY TO RUN THEY LOVE HIM WHY NOT BUT IF HE DO HE NEEDS TO LEAVE THAT RAP S**T BEHIND HIM AND STAY DEDICATED AN FOCUSED TO HIS COUNTRY GOOD LUCK..AN BY THE WAY WHAT WAS THAT F****TDY LOOKIN S**T YOU AND AKON WAS DOIN IN THAT PITCHER ABOVE ON PAGE 5?????

For someone who came to the U>S at a very young age, has no knowledge of politics whatsoever or any type of Law background. I don’t think thats a very good idea, he grew up here n he doesn’t know anything about the Haitian culture or politics. Wyclef can help the country in other way but as far as him running for president, its not a good idea at all. For the record i don’t have any problem with wyclef and i think he is a great artist and a great human being but its still not a good idea.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Stan_Vinyl/ Stan_Vinyl

If I could vote for him I would… best of luck Wyclef, you have a heart of GOLD!

I think before you say something know what you talking about you say he dont know nothing about haitian culture he was born in haiti he been in and out of haiti not to mention He sings in his native language as well wyclef is the only haitian guy out here who truely represent his country other celebreties who have haitian roots dotn even admit they haitian with him you dont even have to guest he shows it as you seen in the picture maybe he can do the job maybe he cant but do you have a better person in mind i dont even think anyone of you here knows anything the haitian culture or history so you guys couldnt possibly question his elgibility to run for president

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/geode07/ geode07

“He has the money to run” has to be the most inconsequential statement in this article. Who write these things? High school students prepping for final exams? I don’t think that Haiti is known for it’s political savvy and I don’t think anyone can beat him in a popularity contest there.
In America we elect actors, singers, pro wrestlers and anyone with a catchy slogan(and a few million dollars)to the highest positions we have to offer to run THIS country so Wyclef can’t be no worse than Obama who inherited a dying country and get blamed for it’s demise though he had nothing to do with it.
Wyclef would be to Haiti what a prayer is to the lazy in a sense that it gives you hope and lifts your spirit, but in the real world it isn’t much. Who knows? It’s better than what they have now. Someone HAS to give a dam and he IS the face of pride for his country.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Domsoneat/ Domsoneat

It would be unconstitutional by the Haitian constitution for Wyclef to become president. He does, however, satisfy 5 of the 6 requirements of presidential eligibility. Hes does not, however, satisfy the requirement of having lived in the country for 5 consecutive years prior to the date of the election. Sad as it may sound, Haiti is already a very weak state and an unlawful president would not be in their best interest. Do his 5 years see what the people go through and then run.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/geode07/ geode07

When you talk of nations that have histories of staging “coups”,I seriously doubt their “Constitution” holds much weight. Our OWN Constitution is a sham and is amended to the point of being a mockery and not worth the ink the slave owners dipped their quills in. …while John Hands his C**k. ZING!
BTW. What could Wyclef possibly do to make matters worse in Haiti worse than it is now?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Anders1159/ Anders1159

I don’t say that he can’t be a president because I don’t know the future but What do Wyclef know about Politics? let’s be serious, has he been in a college? Does he have a degree in Politics or Law? it would be unconstitutional for him to become President, Has he been living in Haiti for 5 years straight? He is a good rapper and guitarist but that doesn’t mean he has the qualifications to be a president, I like Wyclef but we also need to be realistic. I would consider Haiti to be like an unlawful stupid nation if he ever becomes President, he would rather help with the Food and asphalt the dusty streets in Haiti. BELIEVE ME, Haiti always love you at the beginning but later they will hate you once you can’t fix all the problems in only a 5-year contract, which no one can do, we can consider the ex President Jean Bertrand Aristide to understand the Haitians, Haiti loved Aristide 1000 times better than the way they love Wyclef in Haiti and now I guess he lost half of his fans. It will take more than 10 good consecutive presidents to fix the problems in Haiti, trust me, I lived in Haiti for more than 20 years so i know what I am talking about. I am telling you, I wish I could help Haiti even more than I do at the moment.

    IDEA SOUND NICE.

    HOWEVER HAITIAN CONSTITUTION STATE THAT

IN ORDER TO BECOME PRIME MINISTER OR PRESIDENT.

SOMEONE MUST NOT BE NATURALIZE CITIZEN OF OTHER COUNTRY.

IF MR. WYCLEF IS NOT NATURALIZE THEN I WILL NOT SUPPORT HIM.

    SORRY…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/red_head88/ red_head88

He’s done a lot of work in Haiti prior to the earthquake. He’s been a public figure in the United States and in Haiti for many years, and he has used his resources to help Haiti in many ways and bring to light the many issues facing the Haitian people. If he were president, he, more than anyone, could potentially bring Haiti the attention it needs and, hopefully, more resources and economic stability. I don’t know why he and his family came to the United States, but they came here during a very turbulent time in Haitian history, during the regimes of the Duvaliers, Papa and Baby Doc. He obviously has maintained his culture and heritage in many ways, but his wordliness may be the ticket right now.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Haitian_Sausage/ Haitian_Sausage

    Well throughout history.

A president in Haiti either need to be laisser-faire or tough. you cant be in the center.

the tough one has survived ruthlessly and some has leave some good legacy King Christophe who build the citadelle in the north.

some has used unruly at their advantage
boyer who invaded the East with the unruly of King Christophe soldier to keep them busy.

    some has used brut force.
    Duvalier created the Makout.

and one who was laisser fair i forgot his name but he bring cars and start electricity in the country.

then you got Aristide who was trying moving things at a fast pace. So fast to keep up with other country rather than crowl and pass the baton.

so if someone was to become president. he/she must look at the history and see how to govern and how to pass the baton.

and next time, I would really spport a FEMALE PRESIDENT AND PRIME MINSTER.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jollyroger1/ jollyroger1

I love his music but does he have any experience running anything even close to a government. I mean the “terminator” ran California into the dump.

I like to leave my entertainment to entertainers and my politics to politicians. This will just make Haiti a joke.

It is better for him to throw his support behind someone worthwhile and serious.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DJ_OLD_SCHOOL/ DJ_OLD_SCHOOL

Yes he can, but first he would need to get some education, like a degree in politics, and after a real good cabinet, and also a lot of money most likely a lot of investors interesting in invest and put their money in Haiti. I am from Puerto Rico and I have to tell you our source of money always come from tourism, farming of tropical foods, and most important help from the United States. Since we are an American territory without their help we would be like Cuba, in a real bad shape. Cuban people are great, just those communist ones are the ones who have Cuba mess up just like Haiti, bad corruption have mess that country up. If all the Caribbean united in one stated of be completed part of the united state life would it be easy!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AngryCornflakes/ AngryCornflakes

I see alot of people commenting on his ability to run the country im sure that whomever was there before didnt do much if they had the “ability” and it’s about time to try something new besides as much as he as done for the country it cant be any harm letting him try and build he country up and remember Ronald Regan was an actor when he became president so let Clef run Haiti and stop being a Hata

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/zoulj/ zoulj

It’s true that Wyclef wanna help Haiti so bad,and he has demonstrated so many times, more recently following the earthquake that 300,000 plp. However, the fact is he doesn’t know anything in politics, and about laws. I’d rather him to be the next prime minister instead. Plz don’t end your career like that. we luv u too much.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mystic2uOH/ mystic2uOH

Ronald Regan was the president of the United States he was an actor, people didn’t question his intention when he was running for the job. So what if Wycelf gets elected. If you ever read about Haiti history of past presidents you would see they have all had bad political outcome. Maybe Wycelf will show the world he can revamp Haiti.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AJyAnt1/ AJyAnt1

I hope he runs and wins..

America caused that Earthquake(HAARP), cause they found oil under them, so they wanted to kill the blacks, send in troops and block any help coming to the people, then steal they organs rape the women, and say we are helping. Now America is trying to sweet talk Wyclef so they can control him if he wins. But The HON.Louis Farrakhan talked to him about their intention with him. WE ALL SHOULD BACK WYCLEF cause HATI is our land too. YOU ALL BETTER LISTEN TO FARRAKHAN and not OBAMA, following and believing in him(OBAMA) will earn you the LAKE OF FIRE

I thinking it could help to present Haiti in the world better. And maybe it helps instood try to leave Haiti for better living, people would stay in the country and try to help to build it up. My sister and brothers are tired to ask for money their relatives in other countries. They need a place where they can living. They need work. I could always cry when I talking to my family and i have hear that they can find a place for rent because the prices are so high. Sorry for my bad english!!!

This man has no political history. Haiti is in no position right now for one that has no experience. America is lurking to move on in. The country needs someone who is extremely focused and experienced. So what he has the money, is he going to give it to the people of Haiti? It’s like Bloomberg. He is established in wealth did he give any to NY? Does he make wise political decisons for New Yorkers? Of course not. And when he wanted a second term he bought his way another term.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mayomayo/ mayomayo

no i dont think wyclef is ready for the presidency, despite his good heart and intentions. no ruling out that he could be one day though. what haiti needs the most now is an organizer….and many miracles….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mimi329/ mimi329

NO!!! he hasnt really had anything he’s tried over there sucessfully follow through and he definitely has no idea how to run a country and Haiti shouldnt be treated like some pet project if he really wants to see our country succeed then he will endorse someone that is capable of running Haiti, i think he’s just doing it just to have the title and wyclef doesnt show the leadership skills needed to get the country on its feet. i hope our people can make the right decision because whoever they choose as president will affect their future either negatively or positively

While Wyclef would be the most popular president in the history of Haiti those that know the inner workings of politics know that he is far from saavy enough to be a politician of that level at this time. Speaking as someone that has spent much time in Haiti since the quake Wyclef running for president would be a definite speed bump in the road to recovery for Haiti. My suggestion would be for him to put his financial strength behind someone that trully wants to create change in the country. If he can help someone with the political experience and right vision get in then he could perhaps start out serving his country in the capacity of running to become a mayor or someone on that level that will have an influence but not be someone thrown into power without adequate experience. Yes Haiti has experienced alot over time but lets be honest; if u sit back and think about it Haiti’s corruption is no worse than corruption here in the US the only difference is that we are a society with plenty of money which allows us to hide it better. The people of Haiti realize this is the time for a fresh start or new beginning so to speak. In order to accomplish that they need a leader with real vision and know how not someone inexperienced. Would we be saying go for it if an entertainer with no experience was running for the top office in our country??????

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/-PICLESS_SWAG-/ -PICLESS_SWAG-

Is this guy for real? Does he have the first idea of what it takes to run a country, let alone an impoverished one? I know he’s emotional after the earthquake and all, but common, being the president isn’t your gift, man. Your gift is music. Use your music to establish charities, and open up hospitals and such. African NBA players do this in their home countries all the time. Running for president is not what he should do.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Aceman52/ Aceman52

Please. Wyclef is about as qualified to run Haiti as Obama is to run this country. Haiti is a lost cause despite the star power he possesses. It takes more than celebrity to run a country as Obama has found out

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mimi329/ mimi329

alot of you people are making comments as if there is no other party running for president… there are other more qualified people running for the presidency too… people who actually were there for the earthquake and who know what needs to be done now and actually have experience… Jude Celestin for President!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/geode07/ geode07

    @ Aceman52
Finally! Someone who has sense. People forget OUR Constitution that gets ratified and amended to suit the whims and wishes of individuals or private groups. They forget that WE elect actors, pro wrestlers and “Johnny come latelys” in almost EVERY election! This Country is Haiti on a larger scale but as usual Black people have no concept of civics but would much rather be entertained by gossip, speculation and sex tapes.

I feel Wyclef will do great things. All he have to do be able to surround himself with smart people. He will need some good cabinet members such as…Education, social, revenue, law enforcement, health, human service, transportaton, miitary and etc. He is popular enough to locate and identify the right people. Furthermore, he has the ability to consult with the business world and bring these people to Haiti for investment purposes. In addition he can work with people like Bill Clinton, Bush, and Obama for assistace and guidance. No one person can do it alone. A new goverment need to be in place. Wycleff will be a good start. Giveit a world and support someone you Trust. Wycliff can put together Haiti’s dream team.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Maroons1/ Maroons1

Wyclef for president LOL, LOL, LOL, LOL!!!! Why don’t we have Ronald McDonald or Spong Bob run for president of Haiti they are equally qualified. Wyclef needs to get his ego and head checked.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/im_so_uniqe1990/ im_so_uniqe1990

yall need 2 stop hating. What’s being qualified have to do with anything?? I could run for president and do a better job than what’s been done up till now. look at all the a*****es who have run Haiti so far. the only thing they have done is stolen money and created violence. So if they are qualified then I guess Hitler and Saddam Husseim are qualified in their countries too. I’m glad someone like Wycleff is running for president, he’s a good man and has done more for Haiti than anyone in the Haitian government ever has.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/man_alone/ man_alone

Seriously people! Aside from being a singer and a musician. He is a BUSINESSMAN! Anyone who thinks a country can’t be run like a business is fooling themselves. Wyclef is plenty qualified for this job. Even the most experienced politician has a large number of advisers available for the things that may be outside his scope. He is attempting to inherit a complete trainwreck but he also has a long history of humanitarian aid in his native country. That alone will secure him the Presidency. However, i do agree that just becuase he is a celebrity. That does not mean he will make a good president. Then again look at what they have had for the last 50 years. Could he really do worse?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/NYCsmoove/ NYCsmoove

Whyclef Jean Running For president of Haiti- Bad Choice For Haitians Human Rights

First of all, why not showing you can here for Haitian in U.S., starting with me..Here’s the fact:

We need a president, a self minded one, who can see exactly what Haitians need to stay home to be happy, and those who live in other countries to be willing to stay when they go visiting Haiti, but not see Wyclef as one.

For Wyclef Jean, his mentality is not much Haitian. He thinks living in U.S. is best than Haiti, and also thinks Haitian people have a great, good living in U.S., so he can’t really see what Haiti needs to keep Haitians in Haiti.

For example, When the electric Clef speaking in public, most of the things he usually say about are what the public in the U.S. have been said about Haiti for so long, so that means he doesn’t know his native country well like Haitians born and raised do.

And, like many Haitians in U.S., Wyclef seems like doing things that foreign people will like instead of what good for a Haitian people or Haiti Read more @ http://haitianauthor.com

so what if wyclef has no experience in politics… george bush had experience in politics and we see how good a job he did,, ronald reagan was an actor no political experience and yet none of u ni99ers questioned his abilities… wy are we so quick to point out a blk mans fault that white ppl dont flock 2… maybe wyclef should start actin like obama and start talkin down 2 blk ppl for white ppls approval i bet yall would love him then

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ant71/ ant71

    Dear steve797,

please do your research next time before you speak and know your facts. Ronald Reagan was the governor of California for 2 terms prior to running for president. If you have ever experienced Haiti then there would be no questions in your head as to why Wyclef should not be running for president. He is simply not what the country needs!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Uploaded/ Uploaded

His heart is definately in the right place. I don’t know how much he knows about Haiti foreign policy and all other areas that it takes to run a country but its not a game and celebrity status should be and will be ignored when it comes to policy. I remember reading articles that he could not even manage is own charity funds, how is he gonna manage a country? Im just speaking on opinion, he may or may not be a good president for that country but I hope he knows how to debate and debate well.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Aliaz2001/ Aliaz2001

you guys are so wrong and i wish that people would stopp thinking rappers can only be good at rapping if you guys followed his career then you would know that the man has been very political for the last 5 years and the stuff about his charity was media b.s. the man is alot smarter than anyone is giving him credit for and probably would be a better choice then anyone else planning to run

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Uploaded/ Uploaded

@Aliaz2001 if you get upset about other people OPINIONS you always gonna think people are wrong for what they say. Pay it no mind unless you have the facts to counter attack the opinions.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ant71/ ant71

    To Aliaz2001,

Before u speak on how much better Wyclef would be as president than any other candidate, can u even name another candidate running for president?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Stan_Vinyl/ Stan_Vinyl

Aliaz2001… I’ve seen alot of comments on here but none more clear than yours.

1st off, these same people commenting can dance to his music and let their own minds and the minds of their children be influenced by him that way but then say “we elect stars and johnny come lately’s”

Which is stupid because influence is influence NO MATTER what title the peron holds… hell, a hobo can influence you if you sit and talk to him.

My point being… PEOPLE GET THE PHUCC OVER YOURSELVES! It’s coo to let Wyclef make you feel good on the music front but he can’t be a leader to do that for his small nation?

Don’t be a plague of “niggativity”, stay honest open & true. Then your opinions MIGHT make sense.

    Hotep!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Jordan_Mom/ Jordan_Mom

My vote is for Lauryn Hill! Elect Lauryn Hill for President of Haiti! *smile*

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Born2B_aSigma/ Born2B_aSigma

Since maybe most of you guys commenting are not Haitians, or only have parents who are Haitians and know very little about Haiti or its laws, I feel compelled to tell you why Wyclef can’t run for President and even if given the chance, why he should not take it.

    Why he can’t.
First: Our constitution forbids anyone who has been convicted for anything from running for President … as far as I know it, Clef has a conviction on his record.
Second: Our constitution forbids anyone who holds a public position from running unless he has relinquished that position one year prior to the date of the elections … Clef is a diplomat, travels with a diplomatic passport and enjoys all the privileges of the post. He has not given that up.
Third: The constitution also requires the candidate to have resided in the country for 5 consecutive years and own a residence there. … Not sure Clef meets either of these requirements … although the terms “resided for 5 consecutive years” and “residence” are ambiguous legal terms … he may still have trouble proving them.

    Why he should not
Now, for the sake of argument, let’s put his apparent lack of academic qualifications, and lack of job experience to the side for a minute. Let’s just assume that they bent the rule for Haiti’s most popular artist. Here are the dangers to that:
First: Wyclef does not have a plan or a platform to run on. He would be running solely on his popularity and people would vote for him, not for what he would do, can do, or propose to do, but because of who he is…there lies the danger. These people would vote with a higher expectations of him to change their lives and living conditions. His not having a plan, he’d have to decide what to do, how to do it, with what money, and where the money would come from, after he’d get elected. This process alone would take over 1 year. His lack of experience, finding people to surround himself with to fill his shortcomings, would only complicate the matter. After one year, while he’d be sitting there planning, the people will have gotten frustrated and will taken to the streets demanding he do something. Haiti’s fragile like that. Remember, these people voted for Preval…now they want his head!
Second: There are 70+ political parties, all of whom would be losers to this newcomer, watching the election commission bending the rules for him, would not rest. They would never recognize him as a legitimate president. As they did to Aristide, they would form a coalition to make his life miserable. Couple that with the people’s frustration over his inaction/inability Clef would go from being Haiti’s most loved to the most hated and in no time he wouldn’t be able to set foot in Haiti.
Third: Most candidates are relying on the $11 Billions pledged for reconstruction. That money will NOT come. If Wyclef were to run and win, it definitely will not come as there won’t be peace for the reasons mentions above. When there is no peace, the international community puts pressure on the government to make peace and will not release any funds until there is peace. So whatever Wyclef would promise the people he won’t be able to deliver because he won’t have any money to do it.

History has a way of repeating itself in Haiti, the history he’d be repeating is only 5 years old. Wyclef is a Humanitarian not a politician so he definitely does not want to wake that beast up because, like we say in Haiti, the opposition will devour him with a grain of salt!

The man is a good man, he is wise and he is sympathetic to his people’s plight. Unlike many, fame did not make him forget where he came from. He is young and he is wordly, he has a fresh view of the world around him and he can apply this knowledge and use his influence toward helping his country to rise from the ashes of so many years of corruption, poverty and destruction. He evidently knows how to invest, his own fortune is stable enough. I briefly met him once at a wedding. He was an attendee and he he was very low key, enjoying the wedding of a friend at a local establsihment; he did not come with a huge or noticeable entourage, he simply came as a friend to celebrate his friends marraige. Me, being the low class Jersey wife that I am (lol), I waited until he was having a quiet moment and I slipped over and quietly asked for his autograph for my teenage daughter. He probably would have preferred to just be left to enjoy the meal and the entertainment, but he nicely obliged. Perhaps I will someday be able to show that autograph to my grandchildren and great randchildren and say to them that it is from the man who changed a poverty stricken, corrupted land into a ountry that can stand on its own merit alng with the rest of the civilize world. I wish him godspeed.

PS: If we can elect an actor for President of our own country, why can’t the idea of Wyclef being President of Haiti be respected? After all, Reagan only acted in his roles of choice. Wyclef spouts truth in his line of work.

@ Aliaz2001…I agree with you. Not too many people know much about Wyclef other than his music. That man came to this country not speaking a lick of english and now he can articulate himself better than any amercian born citizen not too mention he’s tri-lingual…lol. He has always rep haiti from day one and have always gave back. There are alot of people that come from foreign countries that have and maintain thier dual citizenships…so he could have already long established his residency. I bet when yal heard his if I was president song…yal thought he was talking bout Obama but not prophetizin his own future. Wyclef knows the politics and laws of this land very well so why wouldn’t he know anything on a real level with the politics and laws of Haiti.

Today is a proud day for me and I look forward to when Panama will have a “Black Panamanian” president…the world is slowly changing and I love it!
