Wyclef returned home to the United States in order to respond to accusations of he and his business partner profiting from the Yele Haiti charity.

The Smoking Gun and Gawker have published two articles that call into question the business practices of Wyclef Jean’s Yele Haiti organization.

From TheSmokingGun.com

The Haiti earthquake has already triggered hundreds of thousands of donations to musician Wyclef Jean’s charitable foundation, which expects to raise upwards of $1 million a day in the disaster’s wake. However, Internal Revenue Service records show the group has a lackluster history of accounting for its finances, and that the organization has paid the performer and his business partner at least $410,000 for rent, production services, and Jean’s appearance at a benefit concert. Though the Wyclef Jean Foundation, which does business as Yele Haiti Foundation, was incorporated 12 years ago–and has been active since that time–the group only first filed tax returns in August 2009. That month, the foundation provided the IRS with returns covering calendar years 2005, 2006, and 2007–the only periods for which it has publicly provided a glimpse at its financial affairs. In 2006, Jean’s charity reported contributions of $1 million, the bulk of which came from People magazine in exchange for the first photos of a pregnant Angelina Jolie (the actress reportedly directed that the publication’s payment go to Jean’s charity, not her personally).

From Gawker.com

There’s no doubt Wyclef Jean — who has raised $1 million since the Haiti earthquake — wants to help his homeland. But a look at his personal foundation’s finances raises questions about whether it’s wisely managing the donations it’s collecting.

The Smoking Gun took a look at the finances of Yele Haiti, the foundation Wyclef Jean founded to help his homeland—and it’s ugly. Jean founded Yele Haiti in 1998, according to TSG, but didn’t file any tax returns until five months ago, in August 2009. And the returns filed so far—for 2005, 2006, and 2007 only—reveal that Yele directed huge sums of money to commercial entities that Jean and his business partner Jerry Duplessis own stakes in.

The most eye-popping expenditure is $250,000 that the foundation paid in 2006 to Telemax, S.A., a Haitian television company that Jean and Duplessis own a controlling interest in. The payment for “airtime and production services” appears to have been related to a telethon of some sort that Yele Haiti produced in the country—its chalked up to “outreach”—and amounts to one out of every five dollars that the foundation took in that year. The return claims the fees were “below market” and constituted the “most efficient” way for Yele Haiti to conduct outreach.

Gawker.com and The Smoking Gun has angles. Unfortunately, not one of them being integral journalism. Truth is, everyone is already pretty much aware that Yele Haiti is racking in a lot of substantial donations.
But there are a lot of people keeping their eyes on Yele to ensure that they don’t drop the ball on getting thesse funds to relief victims of the quake. I truly believe that Clef is sincere in his efforts, until you can prove to me otherwise. On this current situation, not just by digging up some old s**t. Who cares? Let’s focus now on getting Haiti some help. Articles like these are what takes the peoples attention off what is really important.

How much money has SmokingGun or Gawker raised or donated to Haiti?

Just because he paid himself from his charity doesn’t necessarily mean he’s done something unethical or immoral…it really depends on what the laws are regarding arms-length dealings like this. Since I don’t have the entire story, I won’t incrimminate Wyclef. I really don’t think he would do anything so unconscienable as defrauding his fellow Haitians. At least, I would hope he has better moral character than this. Sloppy bookeeping and filing is a problem, and he will be held accountable, but he is, afterall, an entertainer who seems to be on the go and it appears that he didn’t hire competent people to help manage all of this. Things like this happen all the time…doesn’t mean that the person is a crook.

I am curious…I have read comments that Wyclif Jean has done “so much” for Haiti…..what specifically has he done? Has he built hospitals and schools prior to the Earthquake? Has he fed the poor? Has he performed concerts without charging a fee? What specifically has he done? Inquiering minds want to know. If he hasn’t then he is a poser.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/autopro2001/ autopro2001

I am missing the point here, did he pay his mistress $105k? From earthquake funds…when was the earthquake again ? So what if he pays out 2mil every year, but gets the equivalent of 4mil worth of productive work done in Haiti, what if he pays himself to perform, how much would he have to pay other celebrities to do the same?
Yele foundation should now sue the Gawker et al

Maybe thoses people need to know what this guy did already for this country, cause everybody who go there say he did a lot for the developpement of his country.
Why talking about wrong? and never about the good he did too???

Poor Wyclef, he got caught. People best believe his foundation is not the only one with questionable expenses regarding Haiti donations. I have never once seen the Red Cross being investigated and they jump on the donation band wagon every time, are they held accountable? Of course not.

Are all these churches who are collecting donations getting IRS attention? I’m not saying that neglecting to file income tax returns is not inappropriate, but I’m wondering how he could go seven years without filing one tax return without the IRS noticing?

Did anyone check George Clooney’s donation amount as a result of his so-called benefit for Haiti? I seriously doubt it? If the IRS is doing their job they would be checking ALL organizations, churches, individuals, etc., who collected donations in the name of Haiti and make them show how it was spent. These natural disasters are capitalized on by many and ALL those receiving donations should be accountable on how the funds are spent. I wonder why at this point an IRS investigation was initiated against Wyclef’s organization and certain discoveries popped up after seven years? Makes me wonder, although I have my thoughts on the matter, it follows the American way.

I’m so glad someone finally said it: Where is the grand slam about the EMBEZZELMENT OF THOUSAND maybe even MILLIONS by the RED CROSS a few years ago. The people who were caught were eliminated and the organization conducts its work as business as usual.

Wyclef says that some bad business decisions were made by those working for him. We do not know the truth of this or not — and may never will. But I do believe his heart is sincere in his effort to save his people. If we can continue to support the RED CROSS, we can continue to support and stop BAD MOUTHING WYCLEF JEAN.

I hope he does run for president of HAITI. If and only if he can eliminate the present governmental corruption would this be of benefit to that country. More Power to him, I say.

I’m also gratified to observe that the majority of the responders to this article are in agreement with the issues of avoiding castigating Wyclef before the facts are confirmed. Many have learned that his organization has been working in Haiti and establishing various positive impacts upon specific communities before the hurricane. Please take the time to research and verify this for yourself. Then I believe those detractors would find it difficult to mis-speak. As for me, I remain a supporter until proven otherwise — and nothing so weak that anyone has sais so far has changed that.
