Being from Detroit, you can see how comparisons can be made to third world countries in terms of how desolate the city is and how bad things look with straight up abandoned and burned out buildings everywhere. Entire city blocks with one or two houses sitting on the whole block occupied while there is just open field and nothingness around. S**t is very much comparable.

Anyone would be a fool not to agree with what the man is saying. Were not talking SCALE here, but the conditions. Poverty, hopelessness and neglect are the main factors for “ghetto”. Certainly there are varying degrees, but like most things, you instantly recognize it when you see it. Whether you’re in parts of Detroit, Chicago, NY, Philly, Haiti (don’t sleep, because Haiti has some of the most beautiful areas in the world. Most of US don’t even know that) Johannesburg, etc. All those cities have there severe disparities of haves and have nots, and its not too different where ever you go. I have a question for you Casey. Have you ever traveled outside of the US to see what Lupe is actually talking about?

But I agree with you The_West_Coast, I’ve been tellin people before Katrina, before the whole earthquake in Haiti that their is no comparison “hood” wise with America and other countries. Haiti is the real hood, they eat monkey, dry dirt from the ground aint none of that happening over here. First of all BUT not everyone is poor, there are middle class and elite upper class, u will find mansions, beach houses, condos in places like Jacmel, Petitionville, O’kap, Beaches on the southwest half of the island, and a handful of other places but it is true that alot of people live off of $2.00 or less a day BUT alot of people really don’t need money since they fish, eat mangoes, fruit, sugarcane, coconuts, and various other foods that are abundant on the island. It definitely is a poor island for the most part, the poorest eat mudcakes but that’s just life, all about survival. I wish people would educate themselves instead of just talking.

I appreciate what ImTheTruth45 has to say – I’ve been all around the world including Hispanola (on the DR side) and I’ve worked on community organizing in some of the scariest places Boston and NYC have to offer. Poverty sucks, I remember days when I ate a cup of rice and tape water and that was all, so broke my hair was falling out. But no, Chicago’s Southside ain’t even close to the problems that Haiti have right now. People can squat in all those foreclosed buildings in Chitown, the buildings ain’t standing in Port-au-Prince; and if they are, threat of aftershocks make them useless for shelter.

Foreign Aid is not where US gov’t wastes all its money, it wastes it on wars and weapons. We could spend a hell of a lot less money on foreign aid and domestic aid building schools, a smartgrid and renewable energy generation. You want to talk about waste, the whole damn country is wasteful from the mansions to the hood – try supporting a resource recovery industry instead of a waste industry and you’ll put at least 5 times more people to work and do a lot less damage to the planet.

Hell you want to know what you can do? Plant some trees all over the hood – what the hell do you think Wangari Maathai got her Nobel Peace Prize for? Hell, just talking about putting one foot in front of another to help you and your community had a lot to do with why Obama got his prize too. Do something, make something happen. If you’re whole damn hood is falling apart, figure out a way to make it better and then go make some demands on the fools that rep for you in the halls of gov’t – tell ‘em what you need to make it happen, don’t wait for them to come up with good ideas to help you, ’cause that ain’t how it works.

And I do believe that there is rich parts of Haiti, but I was only speaking about the part that was hit by the earth quake. I watched Oprah and Wclef metion the situations in the poorest parts of Haiti I was only goin by what I heard on television. He isn’t the first and probably won’t be the last to make that comparison. As far back as a lot of the pro-Black thinkers and activists from the 60′s – 70′s, a lot of them compared the innercities of America to colonies and third world countries. I am sure they weren’t the first to say that either.

As a person that has traveled the world and seen fcuked up poverty. There is no comparison to 3rd or 4th world poverty to US ghetto poverty.

Before the Hatian earthquake I was reading news stories of some hatians eating dirt pies to aleviate hunger. I dont know any poor black folks in the southside Chicago, Newark, LA, Oakland, Detroit who are in such dire conditions where they cannot get a hot meal. And we in the US have the option of mobility to move to a different geographical area for better opportunity, there is no where for a Hatian stuck on the island to go if he/she is not able to immigrate to another country.

Katrina left hundreds of people homeless and even to this day they still are. Our island is plentiful with sugar canes, mangoes, coconuts, papayas, oranges, fish, chickens, etc., only the very poor of the poor actually do desperate things like eat mud cakes, mostly those people in cite soleil area of Port-au-Prince but put yourself in their shoes, what would u do if u couldnt find yourself, let alone your child. WE ARE THE FIRST INDEPENDENT BLACK NATION. My descendents fought christopher columbus and the europeans back, sent them packing back to europe, even when napoleans great Army came to retake Haiti, we sent them back too. The vast majority of Haitians are christian (catholic, protestant, 7th day Adventist, etc., some Haitians do follow voodoo but that’s not the majority. Anyways, it is true, Haiti isnt the poorest country in the world or in the top 10 poorest in the world BUT it is the poorest in the western hemisphere (our hemisphere) and the U.S. being the only superpower in the world has an obligation to help. This earthquake in my mind has been a blessing in disguise, hopefully this can lead to a rebuilding effort (Haitians/International community) which will lead to a more secure future for Haiti, as well as the Caribbean.

Haiti is the size of 1 small state, the richer and resourceful part of Haiti land area is limited its about 120 miles from end to end , the country is deforested from years of land abuse, the industries that can support people are limited, education is a luxury that has to be paid out your pocket for the most basic. There is no comparison to any Ghetto in the USA to the conditions of Haiti.

As far as Katrina victims still being homeless 3 years after the fact I guess those who are still homeless didn’t have enough common sense to pack up and go to greener pastures, they had nothing to lose since they were homeless and could have brought a Grayhound ticket to attempt to repair their lives in another location, I cant feel sorry for them.
