High School diplomas are overrated. WAIT! Don’t attack me yet…Yes its best to go forth and get it, but it only serves as entrance to college..period, so unless you’re headed to college it doesnt guarantee a good job,career,finances or lifelong progress. Hell, I dont even think high school teaches a third of what it should teach especially when it comes to black people. And the high school ‘experience’ is so freaked that it does more damage than good to young people. True knowledge can’t be gained from H.S. (really not college either but thats ‘prolly’ a different thread). But I suppose I’m ‘glad’ Nas wants that diploma under his belt and kudos to him for wanting to receive it.

I don’t feel like going into another debate so i’m a just say congrats to Nas…it’s never to late for a young African-American brother to continue his education. I’m surprise though, i thought he already his Diploma after all that knowledge he be spittin. Because when you listen to his lyrics and how the way he speaks you can tell he knows his stuff, so that just goes to show that NOT all fools are High School dropouts. As a matter of fact it’s always best to self-educate yourself then to just rely on education it-self. And this is coming from somebody who’s in college, so i’m not looking down, i’m looking up and Diplomas are NOT overrated:they are a step into the future in which allows you to have that Degree.

Nas talked about it years ago that he never graduated from high school. He was born with the great gift as a brilliant lyricist as well as being an avid reader of books. Still high school does not teach children everything they needed to know not even colleges either. That job is for parents/guardians and last ourselves which is what book stores and libraries are for. Some times an A+ plus in a report card no guaranteed that person will be successful in the future as an adult. Nas is just one of the few people who didn’t graduated and became successful.

That goes to show you to never judge a book by its cover. Some of the smartest people didn’t graduate high school or college and some of the dumbest people graduated from both

@CaliFemme23…can you please break it down for me as to why you think Diplomas are overrated. I mean people who got H.S Diplomas can still get good jobs…like working for the Postal office, working for the city or a Government job that pays over twenty-something dollars an hour. But I kind of get where you’re coming from. I think what you’re trying to say is that people are making to much of a big deal when it comes down to getting an high shool diploma; As a result, they won’t get much out of it verses if you have a college degree in which means you’re up for careers rather than jobs. Therefore,your’re looking at much better income than someone who has a high diploma. If so, that samething goes for people who got college degrees because it’s not guarantee that you will get a job at career entry level just because you got a degree under your arms. In fact,there is alot of people like that who went to college and graduated and wasn’t successful at getting a career job. You are a genius my dear…You read my mind, that is EXACTLY what I meant by overrated. The piece of paper doesnt really guarantee anything, H.S. or college. And I didn’t so much mean it as in job/career, I more or less meant it as in knowledge…A lot of us have both types of diploma, but I think my true knowledge came from what I learned outside of the schools. My father is one of thee smartest men I know, he didnt graduate H.S. or college, he went straight military but he taught me things that will always stick with me and i’ll be damned but everything he told me can and would happen in life, has happened, cant beat that. As well as his friends, elders I grew up around…certain books I took it upon myself to read etc…That is the knowledge I appreciated and made me want to learn more. I think that too is why Nas has always been seen as a smart person..that stuff he DIDNT get from school books.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out what you are saying. Say what you want about the educational system. Education is still the key to success for our youth and any level of success should be commended. In case you forgot, you need to a HS diploma to get into college. Nas going back to school can inspire a whole lot of HS drop-outs to go back and get theirs. Black people need to stop so being negative. Encourage not discourage!

A high school diploma is an essential mile stone and the last stepping stone of your “free educational career” for those of you who went to public schools. I think this does indeed send a strong message to the nations youth (regardless of race, etc) that they can at least finish high school. After high school, one always has a choice of what to do with his/her life, but I feel that Nas is doing the right thing. Kudos to Nas.

Its good that he is doing that. He has gained life knowledge (as wisdom comes with age) but now its books that will make him a stronger person.
