Now I admit that they might of spent a little to much time on the south, like New York never produces garbage or bubble gum rappers, but I think everyone is missing the bigger point. It used to be that when you said “rock ‘n’ roll” you thought of certain groups. Now rock as spreadout to be heavy, alternative, new age and it goes on. I think that instead of trying to put rappers in a weight class we need to acknowledge that rap has branched out and that you do not have different classes, but different types. It is a good thing though because it just shows that hip hop is growing.

Younger one (FEMALES ESPECIALLY) don’t know jack about hip-hop and seem to be ok with it. There have been SOOOO MANY time where i’ll be listening to a joint from somebody like NAS or the Wu or somebody that a newer artist remade or took samples from recently and the person (chick usually) will be like “who is that copying off of (insert newer rapper here)”.

When that happens I just look at em like they are stupid, then in my most sarcastic voice ask them what year the song they are thinking of came out, when they answer I tell them the year what i’m listening to came out. Then I even more sarcastically, ask them if they are aware that the year my song came out (1996 for example) took place way before what they listen too (2007 for example).

Then I say something like “is it possible that your artist (Jeezy for example) somehow went back in time and made the song first but then my artist (Mos Def for example) heard it and copied it?” Or is it more likely that your guy copied from my guy??” Lastly, when they feeling pretty dumb I just look at em like a disappointed parent and in my most disappointed voice tell em. “At least TRY to know the history before you just blurt out like that, because you can be loud or you can be wrong but you can’t be both at the same time.

First of all I am from the South…Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area. But currently in Ga. After reading some of the comments on here…I can agree with Doozey and Odoggz comments. I too am fed up the kindergarter, sing-along rap songs that being put out my some of the rappers here from the South but also from the West Coast, Midwest and yes up North (ex. Nicki Mijah). Yes there are alot of rappers riding that 15 minutes of fame. And lot of them of we wont speak of this time next year (check the recent pattern). Alot of these rappers put out mindless, non-creative music that appeals to simple minded individuals (they know who they are..if you are offended that means you probably are the one I am referring to). I am not saying thats everyone who listen to their music. Hell some of the tracks have tight beats and loops but is sabotaged by the rapper’s lack of content and creativity. Example, if you can have a 5 yr old repeating the simple song verbatim, its simple. The type of “I love you, you love me” Barney music. Yes there is alot of garbage being put out now..not just the South but every where else to. Who to blame…first the record companies because they want what is popular at the time. And that the trend right now..simple songs with a catchy beat that make people dance or singalong to. Second, I blame the artist comes out the garbage and expect us to support. Thats the equivalent of putting bullshyt on someone plate and expects them to eat it. Yet some will because of the limited intelligence, lack of creative hunger or hell dont know better. And lastly I blame the consumers who support the garbage that comes out. Yes you can support rappers from your region but damn not all of them. Thats like investing your money in real estate in the Everglades. You know and choose who you want to support for the long haul because of 1. The history of the artist. 2. The product the artist puts out. and 3. The longevity of the artist (like i compared to investing money). If you were a label..who would you back Ludacris (a solid stock with a long history, puts out good product, and always a good or steady return) or Waka Flocka (a new stock with a very short history but is a hot pick ..right now, questionable product being put out now (depending on the consumer) and a VERY questionable return (longevity is very much in question). Examples…Soulja Boy…dropping stocks..hard (should have back him @ Walk it Out and dumped his stock @ Kiss me over the Phone. Mims…a stock bust. How many of you are still waitng for D4L to drop a new one? What I am saying think about that flashy new artist that has one good hit at the moment (disppointment comes with you purchase the whole cd). Trust me I back alot of the Southern artists as well as music from everywhere else (8ball-MJG, Bun B, Pitbull, Trick, JayZ, etc). My hip-hop portfolio is iron clad because back the ones that put out good product, and gonna be there for a minute. There is ALOT of garbage being put out in hip-hop as well as R&B (THATS A WHOLE NEW BOX TO OPEN…its alot of garbage in R&B right now) and other music as well. But I listen to good music and I know who to back. I will still bump a Public Enemy track just of the content of what was being said. The art of storytelling in hip hop is gone. Only a select few possess this ability and most of them are the ones who been in the game for a minute (iron clad stock) compared to the 15 min. rappers (the blue chip stock..alot of hype but rarely a big return). This is something to think about. Put yourself in that record company CEO position and use the scenerio I described earlier. It doesnt just have to be rappers from the South but from where ever. And think about what you would do. There is a reason why alot of these garbage, 15 min artists dont have long term deals with alot of the big name record companies. (could you see Waka Flocka going into Universal with his hit demanding the same contact Universal gave Cash Money at the time…30 million?) Hell no!! Think about how long that artist is going to be around and what product he is going to put out next. I dont like garbage ass music and to some of you on here tends to wallow in it. Having great lyrics and being creative will not get you a deal at all. I have nothing but respect for the Wu but they know as well that money talks and BS walks. Willie the Kid is a great lyricist. I’m a southerner and hate the crap that’s out now. Goodie Mob and Scarface has been replaced with bafoonery like Waka Flaka and Soulja boy. The same people who buy this crap won’t appreciate or never care for real Hip-Hop music or the culture ever. They only care about the moment basically. It’s sad to see Europeans and Japanese care more about the elements and culture of Hip-Hop than Black Americans.

The only Southern rappers that are truly lyrical rappers include the following: Scarface, Eight Ball & MJG (old school), Ludacris (really from Illinois), and TI. The rest of them are hot garbage over a banging beat and hook.

However, the youngster hip hop listeners are the ones who determine what’s hot, so who are we to say. I mean we starting to sound like our parents when they use to tell us what real music is.

OK, being a Southerner that enjoys lyricism, I had to speak on this one. I respect what Meth, Ghost, and Raekwon spoke on, and I agree to an extent. Joke ass artists like Soulja Boy & Waka Flocka have a place…in the under 16 crowd….never should their music be the measuring stick for Southern rap. The bar was set awhile ago, back when hip-hop was all about lyrics, and less about beats….by Outkast, Scarface, UGK, heck…even T.I., Ludacris, and Chamillionaire kept the tradition alive. Most of what’s presented now, is garbage that isn’t worthy of my hard earned funds…It’s sad though, because so many cats in my age group have just accepted that hip-hop is dead, and that ringtone rap is what this music is destined to become.

If they were, more people would buy their music AND the rap artists’ music. It’s not like people have to choose only one genre of music and stick to it, and both rap and hip-hop have their place.
