For a long time now, I have tried to keep my opinions on the election and Barack Obama to myself. I occasionally do speaking engagements, which are not open to the press, and unfortunately some of my comments have been twisted around in a silly manner. The claim that I asserted our new President was not Black is categorically false.

I have seen an endless stream of Black pundits on TV pontificating about the significance of President Obama’s election – many of them making reference to the 3/5th’s clause in the constitution regarding slaves. The point I was making is that this is not an accurate comparison. Barack is the son of an immigrant, not the descendant of slaves. It’s like comparing a half-Japanese man to the oppressed Chinese who built the American railroads. Yes, they are both Asian, but it is not an honest or accurate comparison. We all share the common experiences of being Black in America today – we do not all share a common history. A history that in part makes us who we are – and in some cases (as with the psychological damage that still lingers from slavery) holds us back. These are not, I believe, insignificant distinctions.

I did say I was cautiously pessimistic about Obama’s Presidency – but this is simply acknowledging the reality of an American Empire that is out of control and on the verge of collapse. Let us not forget that on the eve of the election, we witnessed a near trillion dollar robbery of the US treasury. That robbery is still taking place. I do not blame President Obama, but I do not believe the financial and corporate interests that own and control this country will fold so easily. I do not question the integrity of the man as much as the power of his office – which I believe has greatly diminished over the years. I believe the Federal Reserve Bank, the Military Industrial Complex, and the massive corporate interests that run this country have more power than our new President. I hope I am wrong.

After 9/11, I witnessed most of this country become obsessed with squashing dissent and silencing critics. I hope this election does not turn Black America towards this same, fascist mind state; but already I am starting to see it, and it saddens me greatly. I absolutely wish our new President and his family success and safety. But after all I have witnessed in my lifetime, and especially in the last eight years, I am not ready to lay down my skepticism or my outrage for this government. To do so would be unwise and, ironically enough, anti-American.

He is acknowledging that the U.S. is based on white patriarchy and that putting someone on top who is black is not automatically going to change the systemic configuration. The only point that I think black folks need to get over, is the part that he was not a descendant of slaves. Ummm, Kenya was ravaged by British colonialism. Africa as a continent was raped and left in total pieces. We need to go back to Marcus Garvey, Kwame Ture (Stokely Carmicheal) and W.E.B DuBois and have a Pan-Africanist view, that as black people we have all been hurt and need to work in tandem to rise up! If Aaron McGruder really feels that way about Obama’s “blackness” I’m gravely disappointed. I’m a continental African who lives in Canada and I know what it means to be black. I understand being black as a social construct based on how people treat me. As a young child my Indian friends said they could no longer play with me because their parents didn’t like black–this was in the late 80s. I’ve been called n—r, blackie and many other derogatory names and let me tell you being African did NOT spare me the racist remarks or discrimination. I live in Canada a country that champions itself as being multicultural. Yet I always get the question ‘where are you from ?’ eventhough I’ve lived here for over 20 years. I know what it feels like to be an anomoly in the country you call home and believe me I know what it means to be black. Black people around the world may have different languages, religions and culture, but the one thing that binds us is our experience of racism, prejudice and social exclusion based on being “black”. So to my African American brothers and sisters continue to fight to good fight and congratulations on your first black president!!! I’ll contiue to cheer and celebrate along side you!

We still need to be aware that there are those who are not in support of Obama… but complaining isn’t going to do em any good at this point. He raises a good point about whether Obama will be able to make the drastic changes he wants, and we all want, him to… he’ll be fought every step of the way by politicians and corporations who’s wallets get fat with the current situation. But Obama is worthy and courageous for having the guts to actually begin calling serious issues to change that are usually ignored…like race relations.

Let’s give brother Aaron a break. From what I’ve heard and read, I don’t think that he was dissin’ Barack. If anything, he was dissin’ the political machine that has pervasively invaded and undermined our government. He was using the 2000 election to demonstrate the fact that our electoral process is severely broken. It doesn’t make sense that you can win the popular vote significantly, yet lose the election!

Like many of us, he is concerned that our 1st black president is being setup for failure. No president has ever come into office during an ill-advised, unsupported war, a recession (depression if you ask me), major national and international health crisis, bankrupt or near bankrupt states (California included), a 1.2 trillion dollar national deficit (the largest ever), a national energy/natural resources crisis, repeated and devastating natural/man-made disasters, schools failing according to national standards, and a Congress that is split almost completely down the middle with regard to their political party affiliations!

So, the brother, our brother definitely has his work cut out for him!

I pray that Barack is able to turn it around, for all of us. However, while he has my full support, as a black American I am always suspicious of our country with regard to its private and public agendas.

He’s entitled to his opinion, however on the subject of not one of us because of slavery, does he have any idea what the people of Africa have to go through, obviously not. We as African-Americans are descendents of Africa. Not everyone that was in Africa were slaves save for the millions that were brought here and other places and slavery also existed in Africa among different tribes. There were also African that came here that were not slaves. Are their descendent not black?

Slavery has effected many cultures and races, so to base being “black” as so concretely deriving from African slaves seems to be a lack of study or education.
