Actress, comedienne and TV host Mo’Nique won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in “Precious.”

She beat out Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Penelope Cruz, as she did at the Golden Globes.

“I would like to thank the Academy for proving that it can be about the performance and not the politics, ” she said at the podium before thanking the cast and her husband. “To my amazing husband, Sidney — thank you for showing me that sometimes you have to forego doing what’s popular, in order to do what’s right.”

This was Mo’Nique’s first Oscar nomination and she joins a small sorority of Black women who have won Oscars. Hattie McDaniel claimed best supporting actress in 1939′s “Gone with the Wind,” Whoopi Goldberg won best supporting actress for 1990′s “Ghost,” Halle Berry took best actress for 2001′s “Monster’s Ball” and Jennifer Hudson got best supporting actress for 2006′s “Dreamgirls.”

That gesture by Samuel L. Jackson almost through me off, get over your self guy. Anyway I got teary eyed and felt moved from the moment she stood up. I have been influenced by her choices of characters for a long time and she is well deserving of that reward. Comedy is the best medication for everyone but for her to be able to draw on raw emotion and win was phenominal and inspiring to ghetto rappers/ comedians / actresses (hint hint Samuel) like all of the children and young acting parents that I am surrounded by. And thank you Monique for one the most inspiring talk shows on television and having real guests who influence the need to read. Enjoy your accolades, you are very deserving.

COnrats to Monique , she did a ridiculously phenomenal preformance for this role. At this point in hollywood its no longer about what kind of role the actor or actress plays its about the preformance and the dedication to ur craft and character that is recognized. As black people we can’t just take a win and call it as it is we have to pick at it and over analyze it. When the simple fact of the matter is most of the best preformance comes out of roles that push you out of your character. That role took monique to a very dark place in her life that she probably wishes to never rememeber but for all adversity their is a blessing on the other side now im sure she did’nt think this 20 yrs ago when she herself was molested but now to look back at it and take that same pain and open the eyes of theworld into a issue that often times is pushed under the rug , im sure it has been more healing than damaging. Quite simply anybody can play the role of ” positive” nature but then we would complain ” why can’t black people get any real roles tht require talent” . Put even simplier ,WE AS BLACK PEOPLE CAN”T BE PLEASED lol congrats monique u r my inspiration

Glad she’s won….too bad Gabe didn’t, but she has a long career if she lose some pounds because that could hinder her health and career…..

Im with you Mamacita101, Why do we win awards that say you did a great job of protraying exactly how blacks are preceived. Sandra Bullock, got an award for being a great mother, for opening her home to someone of the opposite race.

Think about Halle, got a award for having sex, Denzel got an award for being a dirty police officer. Man come on. Just line it up.

YOU KNOW WHAT BLACK PEOPLE IF YOU HAVE SUCH A HARD TIME WITH HOW MO’NIQUE WON THE OSCAR… THEN WHY DON’T YA’LL GET TOGETHER AND CREATE AN AWARD SHOW… WHERE BLACK PEOPLE CAN GET THE POSITIVE AWARD THAT THEY DESERVES… BECAUSE YOU ALREADY KNOW HOW THE WHITE MAN GET DOWN… WHY ARE YOU EXPECTING THAT DEVIL TO CHANGE???

WHAT IF Sanaa Lathan won an award for that (Tyler Perry) movie “THE FAMILY THAT PREYS” ??????????

I remember Halle Berry won an award for MONSTER BALL

and I think Denzel Washington won an award for TRAINING DAY

not taking nothing away from their talents…
but really look at what type of characters they played….
really look at the underlying message it presents…

    IMAGE IS EVERYTHING

Hollywood comes from Holly-trees, which were sacred in european magic rituals…. its bout casting illusions

the subconscious mind doesnt know the difference between tv & reality…. it reacts to the vibrations of visuals(color-frequencies), sound frequencies and the EMOTIONAL ENERGY…..

television and music basically puts people into a TRANCE like hypnotic state….

dont take these things on face value

are we all blind? why most black actors have to play a part that degrade us as people to receive these mainstream awards is thats all we worth? we are being set up in all forms of media globally for our own slaughter as a worthless people, and those of us who promote these negative images receive tokens for help our open enemy set us up for our own destruction, thats why police shoot us down in these streets like dogs and receive no punishment for their actions.we better wake up and take these blinders off our eyes and look at the bigger picture.

Mo’nique won this roll because she did an amazing job as an actress. Its not about the movie it’s about her talent. Jesus, The movie brought to light a serious problem in the african american community. It happens, and we need to fix it. We as black people would love to pretend we are perfect, but we are far from it, half of you cant even let Mo’nique have her Glory. You had to find a flaw in it. Just like people found a flaw in “princess nd the frog”. Which displayed a young black girl who worked her ass off to have a great life instead of depending on a man to do it for her. She inspired a lazy white man to do better for himself and think beyond himself, yet as black people you had a prob with the fact that she was a frog for most of the movie, got damn sleeping beauty was SLEEP the whole damn movie. I bet the Arabians didnt complain when they got Princess jasmine. Black people stop complaining, and enjoy our successes where we get them.

I liked Sam Jackson’s expressions. He knew what was up and he knew that Monique’s acting – in fact ALL people’s acting in Precious was not that great. The best actors in that film to me were Kravitz and Carey and they are not even actors!

Jackson had the same response for Will Smith. Smith is a way better actor than Monique, but even he is not up to standards. Jackson knew that it was politics and even racial categorization. I like that Sam. At least someone famous kept it real.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blksxylady46/ blksxylady46

Damn, ya’ll some of thee HAYTINISS black muthafuccuz I’ve even seen! Damn, the woman DID a GREAT job ACTING and ya’ll act like she done told ALL ya’ll’s PERSONAL fuccin’ biznis! SDFU already and be GLAD she won for her SKILLS in front of the camera RESPECTABLY and not in some back room succing dic or in front of a camera succing one! Geez!

Even the late, great, Hattie McDaniel had to contend with some of ya’ll great haytin’ azz grand mammy’s who HATED on her Oscar win for Gone With The Wind, playing a maid and she said, she “Made MORE money PLAYING a maid than actually BEING one!” I guess some of ya’ll REAL white people house cleaning grand mammy’s couldn’t handle seeing a black woman being PAID more money pretending (to be a maid) than they got being a REAL maid! Grumbling, haytin’ azzed black women…I tell ya!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/blksxylady46/ blksxylady46

And WHERE did you read that Samuel Jackson had a problem with Will & Mo’nique’s acting skills…? I’d LOVE to see that…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/streetdaze/ streetdaze

SAMUEL Jackson wasnt berating her role in the movie, i think it was just the way she came up on stage with a sort of an attitude . She was in the news lately and I assume jackson was making that face like this drama divaaa. I dont know but i dont think the movie was terrible and i really dont give a s**t . I was sitting watching the show and wondering why do i even give a f k if these rich mofos win or not. I mean do we really care about their lives cause i find myself not very caring for these type people. I think theres alot better people out there who dont get attention and who really do good things for others with no awards show . I wonder what god thinks about them

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/streetdaze/ streetdaze

another thing oprah was talking about the other actress and she was saying how we will see you in the future roles and i was thinking that would be great but come on what other role in hollywood is she going to be in ? Im not being funny i was just thinking where would holly wood cast a big black girl but if she got connections with oprah her career might take off ,

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/streetdaze/ streetdaze

thinking monique performance wasnt all that, guess the academy dont spend much time in the hood.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/n0gar/ n0gar

If you recall, if you even pay attention to things outside of what this site suggest that you know, Jackson had issues with rappers taking on roles that ‘true’ black actors could have. He named Will Smith. I agree with him. That is why when I saw his facial expressions, I knew what he had to be thinking.

No, we are not hating for hating, we are critiquing because of the pattern in Hollywood, which is Jewish run always deciding the image that blacks should have. It was the Jew who made us look bad since the birth of Hollywood. It was the Jew that made “Birth of a Nation,” but they want you to believe that the KKK is against them too.

Whites love to observe black misery, but never participate in resolving the problems. Back in the late 80 and early 90′s, whites bought most of NWA’s and Public Enemy’s albums. Interviews with white from the times said that they loved hearing the black man talk about the black man’s issues. See, they don’t mind hearing it, but they do mind when we act on them.

Precious is just another ‘black problem’ that whites don’t mind hearing or seeing, but when it comes to films that offer black people some solutions, THAT they don’t want to hear or see.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/JAYY2K/ JAYY2K

Congrats to her she deserved it. But my issue is they only give us awards when we act like monsters. I cant remember the last time i seen a black actor win an Oscar for a strong uplifting role. Probably a long ass time ago if ever. Everyone else wins for all type of crap. we win for being a prostitute, dirty cop, and an abusive mother!! Go figure!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/doing_me74/ doing_me74

She won that’s good on her part.I don’t care if its for a negative role its just a movie to me

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/21stHoliday/ 21stHoliday

Mo’Nique is a loud, fat monster…that part was perfect for her

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Just_4U8/ Just_4U8

21st Holiday…do you have a mirror? do you really think that you have the right or station in life to call someone a monster?

nogar/Jayy2k…a true actor is someone that can take a role and super impose themselves into that character. Who said that any of us had to be one-dimensional? The world isn’t set up that way. people in corporate America have to know more than one job…women (especially black women) assume varied roles all of the time. Should they not take care of home because the person that is “supposed” to have that role isn’t there? As for white America…they have applauded and supported their actors that took on roles of discontent (Jodie Foster(white trash), Kathy Bates(mental case), Jack Nicholson(pyscho), Anthony Hopkins(crazy period) etc etc)…yet black America is constantly crying victim. Hattie McDaniels won for being a servant. Should she not have won. If you want black actors to win for playing a school teacher or a scientist…write that role. Furthermore, since we’re so concerned with image…take on a bigger issue…Gangsta rap…and the calling of women and girls b***hes and hoes…thug/violent mentality being promoted at every turn…young men with their pants below their crack showing up at job interviews…focus on the black drop out rate…not what role a person played to get an Oscar. This is not a priority or key to black growth in this country. So…next year if there are no black nominees….Then what? White America again? Mo’Nique took a script…read it…learned her lines and became that character for entertainment and to use her skills as a multi-faceted entertainer. Period! Great job Mo’Nique! Thank you for entertaining me and bringing a “real life” issue to the silver screen.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DaintyJen/ DaintyJen

soooo out of all the actors Mo’ Nique won? If they were looking at the movie Precious to make such a decision then the girl that played Precious should’ve won the award.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/one-true-man4u/ one-true-man4u

There are two females on TV I cannot stomach Monique and Wendy Williams fake fake fake.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/shela96519/ shela96519

Whatever you think of Mo’nique, good, bad, or indifferent, she took that role and made us all hate her…that’s what acting is about. I agree with all the comments as it relates to blacks and the fact that we only appear to win when we are portrayed in negative, stereotypical roles, but I’m still happy and proud that she won!
