Eunice Johnson, the widow of Ebony Magazine founder John H. Johnson and an icon in the world of fashion, has died, according to a published report.

Crain’s Chicago Business reported that Eunice Johnson died Sunday. She was in her 90s.

Eunice Johnson may have lived in the shadows of her powerful husband, but as CBS 2 reporter Lauren Green pointed out on May 27, 1994, building the Johnson publishing empire was a joint effort.

The magazine was John H. Johnson’s idea. Naming it Ebony was Mrs. Johnson’s.

“We both decided it was something we should do,” Mrs. Johnson said in 1994. “We both worked equally as hard at it, all the way.”

Johnson Publishing went on to become the largest African-American owned publishing company in the world. It included Ebony, Jet and Ebony Man magazines.

It also included the Fashion Fair Makeup Line, which Mrs. Johnson created.

Mrs. Johnson also produced and directed the Ebony Fashion Fair, a touring show she began in 1961. The show traveled through dozens of cities across the country and Canada, displaying high-end fashions to communities that the haute couture market was otherwise ignoring, Crain’s reported.

Johnson Publishing is now run by Mrs. Johnson’s daughter, Linda Johnson Rice.

My prayers go out to you Linda Johnson Rice and your family on the lost of your wonderful mother Eunice Johnson. I have grown up in the city of Chicago reading Ebony, and Jet, and also following the careers of both Mr. John H. Johnson and Mrs. Eunice Johnson. I also followed Linda Johnson Rice career too. Linda you have my prayers, and my God be with you in your time of sorrow. God bless your dear.

    Truly a fan,
    Lavern

Rest in Peace Eunice Johnson and thank you for Fashion Fair. For Ebony and Jet to be founding magazines geared to African Americans, and two of the most well-known magazines, I’m amazed the cable news networks so far have not acknowledged her death and contributions during her lifetime. I’m a little surprised BlackPlanet.com has the article here.

Mrs.Johnson was a what you call and look to as a real Lady, Wife, Mother,Humanitarin, and an American success story.
These little enteratiners and regular people can follow her example.Follow an example of someone really did life right.
What she and her husband built was amazing. Their publishing company is part of American Pop history, Black American history, and they were an American success story.
They went against all the odds and made it.
I admire them for being charitable and private.
An extension of Johnson Publishing is her Ebony Fair Fashion Show which tours major cities and gives back.
Pardon me if I leave something out:
Johnson Publishing Co.-Ebony ,Jet, Ebony Fair Fashion Show, Fair Fashion make-up, Ebony Jr., and I do not know the rest.
Linda Johnson Rice, their daughter , went to college and grad school. I think she graduated with honors. She is very private. Classy. Good reputation. Charitable.
Sympathy to her and her family.
She can be happy in that her father and mother both lived to see their dream succeed in their publishing company and see her for many years as adult and capable of
continuing their lifes’ work in their business and asa humanitarian.

I love Ebony magazine and the reason why is I subscribe to it as well as Essence. Mrs. Johnson was a very classy and eloquent lady. She will be sadly missed in the Afro-American community. I lost my sister last August I know what her family is going through I still have my moments and will always miss my sister. I think about her on a regular basis. RIP, Mrs. Johnson…..
