I do agree with her on some points. I refuse to listen to today’s Hip Hop because it is garbage. How many songs can you make about money, hoes, and clubbing? It gotten real old and I for one am tired of the repetitive stories.

I also think if the orginal song and instrument composers would stop allowing these clowns to sample their music, then alot of these pee’ons would get exposed for their true lack of creative talent. Gladys Knight is a respected Recording Artist, a true legend and diva in her own right but to place a statement such as hip hop music is setting people back? I have to disagree. Hip hop is a art form not a physical being. how is it setting people back ? people set people back. listening to certain music is by choice. not by force. rock and roll music in it rarest form sometimes deal with death, blackmagic and violence. Well I think that what Gladys Knight is majority right. Most of rap / Hip Hop is garbage now. And before you go and say TuPac and Common,etc do me a favor first. I am not saying that there was not any music that was too real being made back in the day, the thing I do remember most was that it was something that was not out in plain view for everybody to listen to and and emulate. Certain things were only done when there were only adults around. A lot of the music that is being made now, is definitely not appropriate for children, but it is on television and radio, during times when young minds can listen and soak up… Never mind the fact they can come online and see the video and get to see even more things than what they are ready for…

While I agree the quality of the genre has taken a turn for the worst, people need to stop blaming music and television. The only reason why it’s being produced is because there is a market for it. If it’s not in demand, it won’t get made because it won’t generate revenue. So take responsibility for your own individual contributions to the mindless entertainment being made. Also, people need to take responsibility for what they allow to influence their families and themselves. You don’t have to listen to it, and you don’t have to allow your children to listen to it. While it’s safe to say that people in the limelight are being watched, remember that these people are not the actual parents of your children and not responsible for the decisions that you make. Stop blaming and be accountable. Respect and values are taught in home, not from the television, movie theatre, radio, and cd. There are always obstacles in black americans way, they just have to dodge them. It’s sad to here that average black teen just wants to be a rapper with no aspirations of anything his. Never to kill anybody’s dream but have plan B. I can’t blame hip hop. I listened to it when it was real. I listened to it when became raw and uncut. There is “SOME” truth to what she is saying. HOWEVER, not “ALL” Hip-Hop!!! There are some artist (I emphasize the word ARTist) that are lyricist of a poetic nature (Common, Talib Kweli, NAS, Lupe Fiasco, Dead Presidents, the LATE GREAT TUPAC among others) who use the art form of hip-hop/rap to TEACH!!! These artist have a “message” in there music. Ultimately, music is nothing other than a form of “entertainment” and should not be relied upon as a resource to teach, cultivate, and elevate our people. That is what good parenting, schools, and life lessons are for!!! Let’s not blame the state of affairs in the black community on Hip-Hop but perhaps a lack of parenting (many having babies too young and lacking education and resources)and education! Last I knew Rock, Country, Alternative, Pop (and any other music Genre) has not made any POSITIVE or PROFOUND contributions to society either. Can’t believe the hype. I have a teenage son and I take “sole” responsibility on how he is raised, taught,resources, and the environment in which he resides. Can’t blame it on Soulja Boy, Gucci Man or anyone else. Most of these hip hop artist today are just gimmicks (a “product” to be sold and marketing)…nothing more, nothing less.

I think A&R reps, and the executive VP of media relations at Sony or any other record company sets black people back musically. The record company’s goal is to generate revenue with the product, and the hip hop product’s primary consumer demographics is not African Americans. We’re talking about consumer dis-appropriations. 70% of hip hop consumers are white. Now you have to ask yourself why? The answer is because hip hop has gone mainstream and it provides for white folks a sort of an over sexualized fantasy of rebellion, drugs, and violence that they can can never experience elsewhere.

This is why “real” hip hop is dead, at least on a consumer level. I’m a huge fan of Dilla, Madlib, Doom, Aesop, Quassimoto, Frank-n-Dank, Foreign Exchange, Nicolay, Strange Fruit Project, Stones Throw, but most music retail do not carry these artist nor have they ever heard of these artist. Most so-called aficionados of hip hop have never heard of these artist. I have to go online and hope that Amazon.com has them. But they sure as hell carry Lil Wayne or any other black artist that perpetuates black men as being thuggish, over-sexed, illiterate, violent, and indignant.

Yet, go to the UK or Japan and they are more in touch with, “real” hip hop than we are here in the states. They’re still breakdancing, doing graffiti art and beat boxing over there. Over here . . . well, we’re too busy smacking the a$$es of hip hop w***es in videos and flossing bottles of Hennessey and Cristal. You call THAT hip hop? Hip hop today is all about product placement and endorsements. Rappers get paid a certain amount of money to mention an alcohol product in their song or flash a sports logo in the video. Meanwhile, artist go to the power plant and the power plant creates a gimmick and image and in turn they sell their corporate generated image to unsuspecting white kids who may, or may not be intelligent or street smart enough to recognize a gimmick when they see one.

Hip hop is a powerful tool and corporations will, and have exploited it just as they have exploited every other black art form. From John Coltrane to Kenny G, From Thelonious Monk to Herbie Hanc**k, from B-Boying (which trace it’s roots to Africa and Brazil) to modern Breakdance, from old Negro spirituals to Kirk Franklin. Hip hop is setting black people back because we ourselves have embraced a second rate version of the culture “WE” created. I often think of what the Cold Crush Brothers or Busy Bee or Fantastik Freaks think of what we are calling hip hop these days?

If we want to boycott or protest anything, let’s protest the use of the term, “hip hop” and stop records companies and artist from using the term. They may be rappers but they certainly are not hip hop. We need to educate the world on the difference between hip hop and rap. Hell, some so-called, “rappers” are hardly rappers, much less hip hop artist. 70% of rap music is purchased by white consumers who have embraced the genre but when Chris Brown was accused of abusing Rhianna, the news media often referred to him as, “Hip Hop artist Chris Brown.” They are quick to point the finger at hip hop for everything that’s wrong in the black community. Even though he’s R-n-B, the media purposely attached the term, “hip hop” to him. They did the same with R. Kelly. They said . . . “Hip Hop & R-n-B singer R. Kelly.” But when Eminem was in trouble and in the news, they said, “Rapper Eminem!” When Kurt Kobaine was in the news, they didn’t say, “Rock’s Kurt Kobaine.” They simply said, “Kurt Kobaine.”

There is a imbalance and hip hop has been exploited and used as a double edged sword against us. But what do you expect, we once again sold our culture to gain a little success. Of course it set us back. Anything we chose not to hold on to and keep pure will eventually come back around and bite us in the a$$.

I personally break down hip hop and rap into 2 different categories. Hip Hop is Jay-Z, Nas, Rakim, Slick Rick ,and Common, while rap is the Ying Yang Twins and Souljaboytellem. One has substance, and the other is just for selling records. I really think the categories should be broken down for artists to step their game up, instead of this autotone crap, and musiq that relies too much on beats and a catchy hook.

sadly, hip hop,country,pop all are just for the paper. no one care about the meaning of the songs. the image of the singers, in the 80′s it was all about shocking the people,now its just revolving door of artist.when u have to look back over 20 yrs for a real singer. that tell u how the music industry,don’t care about skills just paper.

I would not go as far as to say ALL Hip Hop…but most of what you hear on the radio or blasted on tv is garbage. The sad fact is Hip Hop was meant to tell stories.sad fact is the stories being told now are not talking about uplifting the community,respect or each other or culture. I don’t care how you slice it what gets played is what tears down a community not what builds it up. Not to be mean but how many stories (songs) can you possibly make about growing up in the projects, selling drugs, dreams of having fancy cars, dreams of sexing various chicks, shooting someone for talking trash, boasting how you are the best,etc. I mean seriously come on. What happened to real Hip Hop? When listening to the radio or watching tv it makes you wonder if “real and positive” Hip Hop is destined to become extinct.

Personally, I agree with Gladys… It’s not about hating on hip hop or getting publicity right now… It’s more about our elders keeping it real with this clueless generation of ours… If you think about the top Emcees in the game (hip hop & “rap”) right now, who really is out there providing high-caliber/creative lyrics without…I repeat…without playing the role of the “baller”, the “gangsta”, the “drug dealer”, and/or the “pimp/player/hoe”? C’mon now! We as a people are so much more than whats being portrayed.. and majority of us are definitely not either of the above… What happened to the Emcees who weren’t afraid to be themselves? Is this all that we have to offer as grown men and women?

People don’t raise their kids, educate or train them. This hip hop generation is lost and TONE DEAF! I salute GLADYS KNIGHT for keeping it real! We don’t let the children listen to Whitney Houston, but encourage Beyonce WTF? lmao…We give our kids money to buy and support Jay Z, Lil Wayne, and Kanye, but do not support Michael Jackson, who gives back! Where are the priorities? We support artist who Do not give back, I have never seen or heard Kanye, Lil Wayne, or Jay Z giving back to needy kids, battered women, needy college students, or the homeless. They helped guide us and keep us moving in the right direction. Gladys Knight is a legend in music, culture and business. She made it, and has been very succesful at it. I’m not going to disagree 100% with what’s Ms Knight is saying but not all music from the black community wasn’t positive in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. A lot of these artists were drug users, womanizers, alcoholics, wife beaters and criminals . Maybe the message in some of the songs was more positive and suited the time period, free love, civil rights movements, fun at the disco etc. But cut the B.S., this woman has profited off of hip-hop, so many artist have sampled her and she own’s points off those records for example Wu-Tang Clan: Can It Be All So Simple. If she didn’t think the genre of music she would clear the samples and take the money. She can thank so many rappers for helping her maintain her lavish life style while barely being charted in the last 2 decades. St8 Goods.

I won’t say that hip hop alone set us back, but we set our selfs back. Because it is up to the parent to guide there children and to set what is played and seen in your house. Yeah “MAINSTREAM” hiphop is garbage but so is mainstream R&B music. Straight trash for the most part. But saying MUSIC is the reason for holding a whole race back is just retarded. I love Gladys but like most of her peers she is just out of touch. Like most people have said in their comments, Parents and Guardians are responsible for a kid’s mental well-being, not the radio or television. If these kids have unresolved social and educational issues then you blame the parents and guardians…not some dude on TV rapping. Gladys and others like her should know better. Anyone who disrespects Ms. Knight’s opinion has proven her point. To call her outside of her name, etc. when she presented how she felt respectfully just goes to show how much of what she’s saying is true. While it’s true, there are plenty of branches of hip-hop the face of hip hop that’s presented to the world on a massive scale is not one I as a black person want to associate myself with. There’s plenty of conscious rap/ motivation, uplifting, hip hop and rap music but that’s not what the record companies are selling, that’s not what the major of us are creating and it does leave an impression and it influences our generation. There’s a lot of power in music, and the way it’s being used in mainstream hip hop is detrimental to us as a race. As far as her generation being exploited, that’s very true but that’s when we were on the rise, we had to learn that what was happening wasn’t ok, we had to grow. Now that we know better, and we’re being taking advantage of and exploited more than ever, what’s the excuse?

I would respectfully disagree with Ms. Knight. She is entitled to her opinion, however she fails to recognize that Hip-hop (like anything else) is what individuals make of it. You can choose to embrace certain parts of it while disagreeing with other ones.

even the so-called founding people who created “rap” and or “hip-hop,” did not intend for it to be as it is now. they offered to tell life/community/societal stories, with music and through worded songs. yes, some of the lyrics where braggadocious and even fantacy laced….but, more so fun(during the early years). at what point did it become ok to glorify negatives and act as if, this is the overwhelming mindset of a people. what is the responsibility of the so-called “rapper,” “hip-hop” artist to the people that they expose their so-called music too? …what, to lie about their d**ks? …to depreciate girls and women? …to glamorize drugs/killings and basic slothfulness? note: the average residential street (depending on location), is between 30′-50′ wide and perhaps 600′-900′ long…why do i mention this? because, idiotic mindsets, such as that glorified in rap, territorize one damn street as if, it’s the world! (small minds/aspirations…duh!) …i guess that’s why the block is so important! old a** cars (big rims/loud systems), that can’t run or even get off the so-called block! and, whoever sold the thought that “ghetto” is something to be, tricked the low thinking people among you!
todays rap/hip-hop, says nothing to upward mobility or the proper ways to attain it! it has the goofy/gullible, sauntering around with pants sagging, skirts hiked up. halloween faced, with ridiculous toothed fronts and absurd tattoos. and, on-and on! when is enough,…enough!?

I personally break down hip hop and rap into 2 different categories. Hip Hop is Jay-Z, Nas, Rakim, Slick Rick ,and Common, while rap is the Ying Yang Twins and Souljaboytellem. One has substance, and the other is just for selling records. I really think the categories should be broken down for artists to step their game up, instead of this autotone crap, and musiq that relies too much on beats and a catchy hook.

I’m NOT a know it all, BUT I think we have gotten FAR away from what “Hip Hop” is. Now I am NOT trying tp downgrade deepthinker,BUT when he said “I personally (and yes I know he used the word “personally”)break Hip Hop down,etc. “Rap” and Hip Hop. That’s not a true statement. I recently read a post on another site about Hip Hop in England. These kids know exactly what they are talkin about. I am sure some of you have read the line about “The Source” being the “unofficial” Fifth Element of Hip Hop. I unerstand eactly where Ms. Knight is coming from, but i somewhat disagree. There are hiphop artists who are doing their parts to uplift, educate and motivate. The problem is that radio stations and video stations do not play these artists, so older people, such as Ms. Knight, who wouldn’t know where to hear these artist’s music, hear what is being played on the radio and assume that all hiphop music is negative. To be honest, it is getting to the point that all hiphop is becoming negative, because positive artists are seeing that nonesense and vulgarity is outselling quality music, and they are trying to move as many units as the next rapper: Check Common’s verse on the “pokerface” track with kid cudi to see exacly what i am talking about.

HELL TO THA YES….Real hip hop was positive uplifting and made you proud to be part of Hip HOP. MC’s, battling,the live shows were off the chain. Today it’s ignorant, embarrassing, the shows are garbage,(they just walk around for the most part) and it totally degrades us as a people. The sad part is the handful of real MC’s that are left get no love. You make someone think with some real lyrics, like 8 people buy the CD. When you keep it real (REAL STUPID) you sell 2 million CD’s.

i go to NORFOLK STATE UNIVERSITY and everytime i go to the library people are studying and doing what they are supposed to do…so thats a negative thats the problem with people they try to talk about everyone and everybody hip hop did not set people back black people were already set back because of slavery, it was us who did not make a better way for ourselves and instead of encouraging our people to be successful we continue to bring them down.

It is now very important that black people especially African people
acknowledge that the Jesus of the bible is not a white man. According to your own king James version of the bible when describing Jesus in Revelation chapter 1 verse 14 ± I quote ± his hairs were like wool as white as snow.
Note that only black people have this woolly hair ± the Caucasian races have thin straight hair that does not curl. In revelation chapter 1 verse 15 it also describes Jesus it says and I quote – his feet like unto fine brass as if they burned in a furnace. Note burnt brass will always provide a very dark colour. So if the feet of Jesus are the colour black/dark brown and his hair is woolly then he can only be of the black race.
I am finding it very hard to understand why people reject the words of
their own scriptures. Yet claim to be representing that religion. Belief has intervened. Rev 1:15 was changed to refined and polished in later versions of the bible. Please ask yourself why? Why are they still revising scriptures? Have you actually seen burnt brass? Why is hair being used as a descriptive symbol? In Daniel 7:9 (King James Version) he says:
I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure
wool; Some say the Ancient of Days is a description of Jesus others say it is angel, some say it is the angel called Michael or Melchisedek. If you want that description to be Jesus then this is more evidence ± hair of his head like pure wool. If you want it to be an angel then you now better recognise that in your Bible Nubian angels existed. What do you want it to be?

The Indicators of Nubian Suppression

5. They believe being well read is the defining indicator of intelligence.

7. They stand-up for hip-hop unconditionally. They are never critical – it’s all-
good to them. This commercially enforces belief and dismantles sub-
conscious ethical values that lead to a regression of conscious values
concerning what is good or bad for Nubians.
8. They always position physical wealth above mental wealth.
9. Those in the entertainment industries (especially music) always believe
God allowed them to achieve their goal. Yet you watch their god turn on
them if they start kicking knowledge to help their own race – you’ll see
record sales and sponsorship drop. Their gods are the Caucasian
executives of that label and the CEO’s.
10. They think the – What I as a black person need to know portfolio ends
with abbreviated Malcolm X literature, Martin Luther King, the black

years before the other races evolved 17.2 million years ago. Africans of
today are at least 10 million years older than the other races. The Africans
of today are descendants of the pygmy who are the original tar tribes;
those small black woolly haired people who are descendants of an even
older ancient Nubian race. In Mali in 2002 AD archaeologists found bones
of an African man 28 million years old. These are facts don’t doubt this.

Cultural Check IS
A study of “anything” presented to masses that had an evaluation to determine if this “‘anything’” is in the best interests of a

i agree with DaintyJen. there are far more evils in the world. out of all the things holding black people back…rap music is one of the last things on that list. certain things that are present in rap music has also always been present in society…sexism for example. sexism is present in rap because its present everywhere else in society. so you cant blame rap music. plus, rappers say things that will get their albums sold. and its the people that really determine what is said in rap, because its the people who buy the music. black people hold themselves back. if people listen to rap music and want to imitate whats said, then thats an individual choice (if its an adult). and if its a child, then parents need to control what their kids listen to more often. i dont think rappers should automatically be held up as role models. if they want to speak about certain things, then so what. dont buy the album if you dont support what they say/do. i personally listened to rap music growing up…my parents listened to it around me growing up and i turned out fine (depending on who you ask lol). i took the college route. just about the choices you make. you cant blame your choices on music. not to mention that its not really the rappers who control the industry…look at who is truly in power and you will see why rap music turned into what it is now….

It is now a group who had and were raised with 2 loving supportive mature and knowledgeable parents at home and a group who had a single loving parent who in most cases had to struggle and sometimes work 2 jobs to make ends meet. First I would like to say Gladys Knight is one of my favorite artist ever… But just as most of our elders, they give “HIP HOP” A bad rep… Hip Hop is a culture and “RAP” is a part of the culture… Hip Hop was and is for the elevation of our people…”Rap” as it now days is a corrupt commercialized version of our culture…Secondly the conditions of our people are not caused by rap… but WE rap about the conditions of our people. It’s not like R&B singers don’t put out filthy songs and they always have… the difference is some say what they feel without all the hinting around rappers are just a little more open…But the day we shut down and criticize Hollywood for the filth and they put out and the R&B singers for the nasty stuff they put out then we stand on the scales of justice.

I mean sure we had our vulgarities back then but it was more positive music, well atleast thats how it started. Then over time people like Gucci man, Soulja Boy, Everyone that trying to make a dance song. All the people talking down on men and women started coming in force because they are the ones that selling. Good positive hiphop music isn’t selling no matter how good it is. You must now know that in the bible at the beginning of genesis (Chapter 1 Verse 3) when god creates the light on earth it says let there be light and that this light is day and it was good. This light is from the sun. The sun is not white the sun is dark yellow and the surface of the sun under the fire is black. White was not the original light that created earth. Please understand that the black and white both have good and bad in it. White light can blind a human – but humans can not end up blind in the dark. Ghosts are the color white never any other color. Before god made light he was in darkness so darkness can’t be negative for god to exist in it when creating life. Understand
that the darker you are on earth the better. The soil that grows plant life is brown which is the same color of the Nubian. It is not white.

Rap/Hip Hop has a bad rap period, statistics don’t lie…16-25 yrs of age listen to rap, drink alcohol, smoke/sell drugs, commit robbery’s, and murders, this age group has the highest statistic amongst any other age group to fall prey in this system.

Music back then had substance, meaning and a purpose…. So did Hip-Hop from 1979 to the mid 90’s Hip-Hop was movement of Generation-X the kids who were borne in 1959 to 1985.

Hip-Hop was a movement of knowledge, black pride, Education or Edutainment as the Temple of Hip-Hop’s founder and leader of real education through entertainment KRS-1 calls it. Gladys Knight is truly entitled to her opinion and I respect it and she is right to a degree but yet I will say this the true essence of Hip-Hop is dead there is no substance in Hip-Hop anymore. Notorious B.I.G, Jay-Z, Nas, Jadakiss,Common, Buck-Shot-Shorty, Tribe called Quest, Black-Sheep, Big-L, Red Man, Method Man, Rah digga, Busta-Rhymes, LL-Cool-J ,Kanye West, Outkast and T.I just to name a few lyrically have skills. First you would have to know the definition of HIP HOP to say whether or not it sets a particular race back. I got much love for Gladys Knight (take away the G and the K from her initials and you have “ladys night”) but I think she might be mis-informed about the entire definition of HIP HOP. What she might be referring to is that HIP HOP in today’s music might have taken away that illusion of Hope and Prosperity but, in actually HIP HOP has created Hope and Prosperity. HIP HOP and yesterday’s music are very much alike when it comes to the glitter and glamour and certain aspect of life’s lessons. However, HIP HOP tends to be more current as in what’s currently going on in today’s society without polishing any surfaces. When I lived in Japan I had an experience with a Japanese kid coming up to me saying “G’s up” like that was a coming way to great black people. I asked him where he got that from and he said he learned it from MC 8. I had to kindly educate him that not all black people spoke like what he saw them do on tv and rap videos… The horrible thing about Gladys making a statement like that is that Gladys is a MORMON! YES! GLADYS IS MORMON. She’s part of a cult that for years and even til this day teaches that Black skin is a curse and up until 1978 wouldn’t even allow Blacks in their temples because of their skin color. That’s 13 years after civil rights was fought for. They still to this day believe that whites are better even though they don’t openly teach this. Notorious B.I.G, Jay-Z, Nas, Jadakiss,Common, Buck-Shot-Shorty, Tribe called Quest, Black-Sheep, Big-L, Red Man, Method Man, Rah digga, Busta-Rhymes, LL-Cool-J ,Kanye West, Outkast and T.I just to name a few lyrically have skills. Their word play was ridiculous and they had songs that have substance.

A lot of the Rappers today are what they are, they rap and their rap is poor they talk about being pimps, most of their style of dress is crazy and they have no respect for the pioneers that paved the path for them and they also have no knowledge of their own self worth or history…
Hip-Hop is about culture, life and the celebration of freedom as well as the right to tell the world what the hell is going on in your neck of the woods.

I love HIP-HOP and some of these new Hip-Hip artist respect the craft and I support those that do. Remember these Parents are the teachers of their children; a mother and the father are here to guide, love, and nurture as well as to support their children. This is for Beatmizer1: I agree with you on a lot of points especially on the evolution of hip-hop. I spoke of the same thing previously. Rakim, KRS-One, Tribe, De La Soul, I could go on and on about how many cats back in the day actually rapped about substance and not flash. I admit, I hear a Lil Wayne song and the beat is nice and the song is likeable but it’s all the same stuff all the time. My money, my clothes, my house, my cars, my girls… whatever. If you compare today’s music to yesterdays there is one huge difference. When Michael Jackson died, everyone, white, black it didn’t matter, knew who he was and was saddened by it. His albums flew off the shelves.

When you hear older songs today, you reminisce and the song will get you bouncing and dancing and singing. They have longevity because it was quality music. Today you hear a song, 3 weeks later, it’s a memory if you even remember it. Who will remember “Birthday Sex” this time next year? No one. There were a lot of advances in music during the 60′s, 70′s, 80′s and 90′s. Now all we have is cookie cutter molds. You got guys coming out with “Stanky Leg”, “Two Step” and they all sound the same.

I think the downfall of rap or hip-hop came with Luke Skywalker and 2 Live Crew. I mean, NWA was raw but they talked about life. When 2 Live Crew came out, it was just plain vulgar. They went to court and won because of freedom of speech. But like the saying goes, just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. Luke said in an interview that he would never let his kids listen to his music, so why was it ok to make it knowing kids could get their hands on it?

I don’t know if this was the “entire” article or just excerpts from it. The fact of the matter is, it’s not hip hop that’s killing our culture. It’s certain artists and certain forms of hip hop. The hip hop that’s played on the radio that’s pushed by the white execs is what’s killing us. Conscious hip hop like The Roots, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Dead Prez and the likes don’t get air time. If you talk about sex, getting knob slobbed, drugs, guns, then you get air time. So those particular artists have sold out hip hop for platinum selling albums. The sadder part is, they couldn’t do that unless the public wanted it. So with that said, it shows you how bad the state of black America is. We have become a pathetic people with no morals and no standards but then get up and go to church on Sunday morning. Truly truly sad. There are some very powerful commercial artists who could make a stand to save hip hop but money talks. Black people “we” have sold our own souls for buffonery and platinum albums but then we turn around and say, it’s just a song, like it doesn’t effect our minds, especially the children.

I will say this about Rap and Hip Hop. Its Truely gotten out of hand. I do believe that music does influence our society, and the fact that rap now glorifies Money, Drugs, Sex, and Killing, its gone too far. People are quick to get upset because Gladys and others speak the truth. Not all black life is based on poverty, Drugs, Treating Women like dirt, and drugs. I know that is the lifestyle that most of these gangsta rappers are “USE TO”, but its not black life. But to take it back, hard rock and heavy metal use to get same rep from the white community. Poniman31, I agree with you man. People always seem to say “Hip Hop” is black culture. It’s more of a sub-culture if you will. My 84 year old grandmother don’t know who Jay Z or Lil Wayne is, so it’s not part of her culture. Hip Hop originally came from the streets, talking about those individuals in that life but once again, that’s not all of black America. The problem with this racist society we live in is that anytime there’s something negative in our community, it gets applied to all black culture. There is still some great, great hip hop and rap out there but the degrading, stupid, ignorant stuff gets all the airplay and sells the albums. Hip hop is not the problem with black culture or sub-culture. It’s part of a bigger problem with the black community, a lack of self love, respect and knowledge of one’s self.

They had the funk. That was the time when music was great. Today music is awful. These kids have watered down music.

Well, one of our biggest problems in the black community is that our kids are looking up to athletes, entertainers, etc as role models as opposed to looking up to their parents as role models. Ok. I understand the need most people have to uplift our race but let me ask once our music is better or even if rap music itself is abolished, what then? U can’t save a race of people by just stopping what is deemed negative in the music. True rap music is not what it used to be, of course not! The days when the mos popular rappers were on the corner freestyling r over. Ever since those days rappers have record deals and million dollar companies looking for them, this wasn’t the case back then. Firstly, rap music has no definite shape or sound so there is no perticular way hip-hop is supposed to sound or b. When u say there is a rap song u don’t like there is Another rap song on the opposite end that can appeal to u. Secondly, rap is a living and breathing force meaning it evolves and changes to it’s situation. If in the past rappers talked about coming up and becoming free and equal, if in the future equality is achevied then most rappers won’t b talking about it will they? Thirdly, music in general is only what we make it. If there a lot of dance songs out there about nothing but dancing and having a good time then most people r listening to it. It would not b popular if no one listened. So we r just as responsible for the type of music we hear as the artists themselves who create it. And lastly, and most importantly, IT IS JUST ENTERTAINMENT PEOPLE!! True music has affected much of our lives(or it at least feels that way)but the bottom line is anything that is sold to a person that is not needed to sustain life is for entertainment purposes. From movies, to video games, to music it’s just entertainment. And once something is classified as entertainment it becomes optional. No one needs to hear Jay-Z’s new track or Beyonce’s new song but we go out and buy it because we want to. If anything is labeled as entertainment it can’t rightfully b taken seriously. The reason rap is talked about badly is because u don’t have to nessesarily purchase it to hear it, just turn on the radio and there it is. It’s not as easy to talk down about movies or video games because if u don’t make the physical effort to go and get or see them u won’t know anything about them. Music is around us twenty-four hours a day whether we like it or not. This is why rap has such a backlash. I submit to u all that rap music is just entertainment and just as u watch a vulgar movie or play a violent game it should not b taken seriously. Teach your children the same, that it is all make believe and is just a way for people to make money. There is no reason for such animosity toward something u have the option to hear or not.

These children,now a days, are tryna keep up with the times, and the technology aspect of things, rather focusing on real life struggle and obtaining great intellegence, that would help them grow and prosper in this world today and would be meaningful in their futures.

I know far as becoming a rapper in this day and time, there are not much requirements expected from our youth, all u need is a certain look and a voice, no matter how degrading the lyrics are to blacks, women, children, race or even sexuality, all is acceptable to the “White man”. They will market this garbage hoping to destroy our culture, our dignity and our respect. Wow Hip hop, for all the old skool cats that grew up in the era of Tupac,Biggie,and Jay-Z,just to name a few, Will never get the opportunity to gain postive and role model like feedback from the current hip hop artist today. Yes they are catering to all the folks in this “New Millenium” all the Teens and young adults.

The people who “just dont give a damn” The race of people black, white or indiffer, that say “I’m gonna do what i want to do”, or “You cant tell me nothing I havn’t heard before” or even “Well, If thats true then why it hasnt yet worked out for you”. Just true ignorance of a people.

Now this is the ignorance that we deal with in our young people, our “next generation”. So for the rappers out now, this is their same mentality and reality, its thier vocabulary, their nonchalantness about important issues.They dont need or want advice from someone thats been where their tryna go, or even listen to good structured advice. They may even help them in the long run.

Now the question is, Who’s fault is this, in our world today technology and the greater importance in life are now text messaging, the internet, twitter, and blogs, also the many sex sites and meet men and woman sites, Our world has now become evoloved and involoved totally around these things. No longer things like stay in school and gain acceptable knowledge and respectable behavior.

The government has changed the way of thinking for our youth and also for some of us Adults as well. The importance for our human race, that once was, is now shattered and scattered, meaning no more heard about. These children,now a days, are tryna keep up with the times, and the technology aspect of things, rather focusing on real life struggle and obtaining great intellegence, that would help them grow and prosper in this world today and would be meaningful in their futures.

I know far as becoming a rapper in this day and time, there are not much requirements expected from our youth, all u need is a certain look and a voice, no matter how degrading the lyrics are to blacks, women, children, race or even sexuality, all is acceptable to the “White man”. They will market this garbage hoping to destroy our culture, our dignity and our respect. Hoping to have us destroy ourselves within, like they have done and accomplished in so many other aspects, in our low poverty neighborhoods. I conceive this internet site holds very good indited written content posts ….

The stars are not directly to blame but money talks and you
know the rest. Viacom brought BET a few years ago. This is the way for them to
corrupt our children’s minds by brainwashing them with sex, violence, misogyny
and other negativity. This keeps their minds in a low place in order to make
them unthinking materialistic pop culture chasing junkies. Some of them you can
not reason with because they simply can’t reason. This is not just a custom of
these times, this is intentionally a form of mind control over our kids. They
know kids and teens will copy their music idols, so they use these entertainers
to corrupt their minds. Rap started out positive, then it evolved into
reporting bad cop behavior and crime in the hoods of America, as it became
mainstream THEY took over and focused on the violent side of rap knowing the
kids would copy their idols. They intentionally brainwash them into
self-destruction making the future of our community extremely dim and hopless.
