I think he was sloppy with the comment. I agree with typeflow that Game is trying to make a distinction between school and a proper education. Think about the two most important things in everyone’s life right now. Economics and proper health. You didn’t learn jack about either in “school” I think the message should be that you should definitely learn how to think critically and logically, and whatever endeavor you wish to pursue, do the necessary research required. By necessary I mean to a degree of mastery, not just on a peripheral level. It use to be a time when all you needed was a high school education but those times are long gone. I don’t know what world he lives in but everyday life involves more than just knowing how to read and adding. Problem solving skills and comprehension are a part of adult life as well.

While I agree our public school system needs significant work, I’m a firm believer in educating the mind of a child has to take place at home. Being from the country we didn’t have the education setup that one would find in northern schools. But rest assured my PARENTS kept us in the library supplimenting what we learned in the classroom.

There is a reason why nations such as China, Japan and India have surpassed this country as far as educational pursuits.

I hear what you are saying but there are somethings you are overlooking. If you read up on the self-made millionares they did further their education other wise their accountants would have cleaned them out.

You are also oversimplifying the aspect of degrees. Your not getting a job in a given field even though u have a degree could be a result of poor resume, poor interviewing skills or simply not having a skill that puts you ahead of the competition. However, I do agree a degree doesn’t guarentee you anything. But the statistics prove that those with a degree earn significantly more money overall than those that don’t.

At the end of the day a degree shows that you are trainable, combine that with usuable skills you can land suitable employment.

Also realize due to the economic strife in this country that is also playing a role as to why people with degrees are under employed. So that is a reflection of the economy not your education.

I have two and am in the middle of procuring two Masters. After I got my Bachelors, I took the first job that came along because it was necessary. When I began to re-evaluate my plan and saw my current employment was of no benefit to that plan, I did what I had to do and rolled. Presently, I’m still not exactly where I want to be BUT I’m much better than where I was. I’ve been at my current position for a little shy of a year and financially I’ve been able to do more in that time than in the 3 years at my last job. Furthermore, the future is much brighter.
While higher education is not for everyone, most of US don’t have trust funds or friends and family who will support us while we pursue our dreams. Oprah went to college, Donald Trump received an inheritance.

What you have to remember is when you were in school and taught higher education is a must to get a decent job and not about entrepeneurship, look at the source of the information.What I’m saying is the source was mostly likely an employee because that was all they knew. That’s not a bad thing, it’s just that times have changed. Long gone are the days where you worked one job until you retire. Our generation and beyond are a completely different breed. We are the generation of CHANGE. We were meant to change the standard for better but today’s youth are lost. My point is we know what the older ones don’t but they paved a way so respect is due. I’m building my entrepeurship as we speak. I served in the military and I use that for everything it’s worth and I suggest you do the same if you’re not.

Sadder part of this is the influence he has over the youth. In addition to them already losing their way, you add insult to injury and make them believe they don’t need to go to school.

If you grew up in china you would probably learn more about asian culture than anything else. Even with that being said there is still no excuse because we all have free will and libraries are open and the internet is always running. We get stereotyped because of idiots like this. Ask most young black men what they want to be as a career and you are going to find most looking at sports or entertainment. @pop I too was in the military (navy) and i agree the govt. does some ill things but what govt doesn’t? Even the govts. of Africa and the mideast are rank with corruption. To be honest with you i think your problem is where you live. MI is not a state where jobs are plenty. Have you considered moving? I bet if you went somewhere like TX or another state not so hard hit you could find work and be good. My mother took me my brother and two sisters and left everything she had to start a new life cause my dad was tripping. At 12 i was homeless and she took us from that and worked her but off from nothing now i am in a position to help and i do as much as i can for our communities and to promote success and no one can take that from me. @POPP Thank you kindly,. I try, I try. LOL. Seriously don’t get me started on that. I’ve been working with disadvantaged youth in every capacity since I was in the military at 17. @everymandream9 Yeah don’t get me started on my soap box lol. I used to be just like most blacks wanting to blame everything and everyone till i gave my life over to G-d. Then i had a real heavy revelation and that was this. In Genesis in the episode with Adam and Eve G-d comes to adam and asks him what happened and why is he hiding? I was like if G-d is all knowing why is he asking this question then it hit me. Adam and his wife didn’t get the boot for the mistake they got the boot because when faced with the possible consequence of G-d they didn’t repent (teshuvah to turn away from the sin and back to G-d) but rather Adam blamed the woman and G-d by saying “It was the woman you gave me” even though this woman actually came from Adam so it was really his own fault. That changed my life and after i got that principle down and applied it to my life everything got wonderful. Now if something doesn’t work for me the first thing i look at is my self and if more folks did that then our surroundings would change for the better. The hood is the way that it is because the mass behaviour is self destructive and doesn’t want to take accountability and responsibility for actions instead we want to lay blame on the public systems of education and the white man.

Education can come from anywhere. I know some really brite and intelligent people that have been home school and has made major strides in life. Also alot of the things in those old history books have been proven wrong and are extremely biased. “After you learned how to read and do addition, what else did we need school for that we use in everyday life as an adult?” – I’m so happy my son’s pediatrician didn’t think like this. You do need school if you plan on being a doctor/nurse or some other profession in which you actually HAVE to have a degree to do your job. Yes you can probably educate yourself about a lot of subjects but having an education and not being able to use it is just as bad as not having one at all to me. I highly doubt that any hospital is gonna let anybody who thinks they can perform a lobotomy stroll in and start performing surgery.
p.s. and no not everyone needs a higher education to do their job, other options are available.

Im not knocking nobody about getting a education, because i got one myself. The only thing I use now that i learned from school is reading, writting, math, and my trade. I learned history in school to find out that was a lie, learned biology and im not a scientist. I will advise everyone to learn about this man made laws and the government.

yea, i go to college and they make you take classes that aint got shyt to do with what you in school for. i understand me got to take math, but chemistry and 3 physics classes for eng…bullsh***i even heard they dont use calculus and all that high level math once you become a engineer. just a way to take yo money. shyt the only school i know that get down to nitty gritty and teach you what you need to know is a skilled trade school. taking psychology and macro economicis major borin shyt.

Taking courses outside your interest is not a waste. You have to widen your scope. Nothing is exact on this planet if you didn’t notice.
Many people can’t find employment in their area of expertise, some
are fired, taken ill and can’t perform in certain areas, experience a change of interest, competition with others with a wider range of
knowledge, etc. Think about it. I taught language at the secondary level in a public school. The reason why school might feel like a babysitting service is because of how bad some of the kids are. Instead of being able to teach, the teachers have to make the bad kids behave. I would be surprised if the Game was not one of those kids who need to be babysat.

The worst thing for especially inner-city parents who want their children to do well in school is compulsory education, which is another way of saying you are forced to send your children to school. I remember wishing certain classmates of mine would just skip school since they did not add anything because of their presence.

I hope it is different now but when I was a kid, if you were a parent in the inner city who wanted your kid to be a good student, but you couldn’t afford to move or send your kid to private school, you were screwed. The reason why is because the bad kids were the ones who set the tone for the school. If you send your kid, at least back when I was a kid, to the wrong school, his life would be made a living hell. It wasn’t until I got to high school that I actually saw black kids other than me who actually wanted to get good grades, but most of them didn’t live in the ghetto and they had both parents. I don’t know how many of my elementary classmates had both parents, but we were all living in the ghetto. I now know that the reason why I never saw any adults who emphasized the benefits of doing well in school is because anyone who can afford not to live in my neighborhood doesn’t.

I also am just now beginning to appreciate just how big a difference it makes on someone who did do well despite being in an environment hostile to success. Since I spent most of my time trying to avoid contact with those classmates of mine who would not leave me alone just because I wanted to behave and do my work, I missed out on learning what would be helpful now as networking skills in order to help me get a better job, since having a degree turned out not to be enough. It pisses me off so much that after what I had to deal with because I wanted to be smart, instead of being able to get the last laugh, if The Game knew me, he could point to me as “proof” of his point about school not mattering. So I am basically trying now to recover from having to grow up around ghetto ass niggas like the Game

The problem is how the message was delivered and the source. You have to admit that most of our youth are lost with no sense of direction and the standard way out of the hood is rap or basketball. All he is doing is making things more difficult for those of us who are actually in the communities effecting change.

Let me tell you what networking did for me:

It gave me a chance to be an apprentice at a top cancer research facility at the age of 16;

It helped me get into a major university;

It helped me get letters of recommendation for jobs;

It helped me get into positions in which I earn six figures (or nearly six);

It also helped me keep a rolodex of those at the C-level and Director level that “the school of life” wouldn’t be able to;

It also allows me to move in various industries (I am in sales), which would otherwise be hard to do (if not damn near impossible);

It also helps me help my family members by getting them positions for which they are qualified, but need access because they don’t know the right people. Whites do this all the time–why shouldn’t we take advantage of it?

So don’t think that I am being stupid, sweetheart. I am very much aware–unlike you and those like you who piss and moan about what is fair and what is foul. Nobody ever said life was fair. I work for a major IT company and I am in sales. There are very few blacks in my position and I see a lot of unfair shyt happening, but I stopped crying foul a long time ago. It’s pointless. My solution is to not break my stride and continue to network so that I can improve my life and, ultimately, my family’s.

People in the real world need school because the odds of becoming a famous rapper is ridiculously low. It helps become something more then just the norm. Yes there are people that do great things without a higher education but you have to realize it’s not easy. An education makes it one step easier.

The public schools in many inner cities are truly horrid. Detroit’s schools are a prime example. I personally think that if parents can afford to, they should pull their children out of school and create small home-school groups that are taught by individuals who are experts in math, english, science, and other subjects(home schooling is protected under acts for private schools). I also think that school should be taught year-round.

My sister took her boys out of school and started home-schooling them about two years ago; they are actually doing much better.

Being educated is definitely a need, but I have to agree that most subjects didnt do s**t for my development.

A lot of people are blaming the school but fail to look at the people who are running the schools. Another thing i notice is that people will argue anything, black people’s problems real have came down to our own mind set, responsibility and decisions. I read someone saying something about we are losing people to prison, well it is more so a cultural (not skin color or how a group of people look culture is a set of SHARED attitudes, norms beliefs that are passed down from generation to generation) thing. True, there are high-school drop-outs who are successful entrepenuers, but the percentage of drop-outs who are not successful is much higher.
The problem is that people take a few anecdotal instances and think that these success stories typify the rest of a particular segment: they do not. Statistically, studies have shown that more education brings more income to the household.

Also, taking a variety of courses makes a person well-rounded, BUT it ALSO can provide options for a person who may decide to change fields. It also shows a person’s intellectual ability to handle multiple subject–or at the very least, it will help develop a child’s brain.

In Game’s case, it sounds like he thinks the system failed him. However, I question this because if you want and education, you’ll get it.

I know a guy who is in his 40′s and he devalues education. He himself got held back in high school twice because he didn’t have the discipline to finish; instead, he wanted the “quick money”, so he sold drugs. He’s now a line worker for Ford (family member got him the job–talk about networking!) He’s been there ever since, but if he ever lost his job, he really couldn’t get another one that pays him what he is currently earning. My point is that had he gone to college and gotten a degree, he could have at least made himself more competitive in the job market.

What really makes me shake my head is that when I told him that he should go to law school because he is pretty bright, he told me that he didn’t want to spend time in a class room. Yet, this man would prefer to risk getting arrested and losing his job by selling weed to his co-workers (at the work site!) and he thinks that his two girls should be educated by the “streets”. He wants to be the next Matthew Knowles and his daughters be the next Beyoncees. This is proof that him, The Game, and many others like him are not necessarily failed by the system; sometimes it’s just the person who fails himself. So they need to stop complaining.

Frankly, I’m tired of hearing people criticize having a formal education. I agree that many school systems need to be re-hauled, but this problem is systemic, so parents need to get more involved instead of sitting back and waiting.

My response: First of all, you jackass, I INDEED WORKED to get that position. I worked my arse off, taking classes in secondary school that were outside the requirements of school policy. I took physiology, anatomy, pre-calculus, physics and more. Secondly, NOTHING was ever handed to me. Even with networking, you still have to possess the talent and the intellectual horsepower (clearly something you don’t) in order to get more than your foot in the door. I got this position because I established a relationship with the head of the Math Department at my high school early on and he saw potential in me and wrote me a recommendation to an associate who worked at the research facility.

IF you knew anything about research, you would know that it takes more than just having an opportunity handed to you–you actually have to have some experience and training.

Furthermore, you can’t even make a solid argument because on one hand, you criticized networking in a previous post, claiming that people get positions based on who they know; yet, you turn around and say that networking isn’t any good because of this…? I myself have seen two young black women go from working as cashiers at the company cafeteria to working in other departments within the company for better pay? How did that happen, you ask? I have a life).

I have to some-what agree with the game and I see his point that-its alot of people out here who go 4 or 5 years in college and don’t end up with the job they went to college for or either they make less than someone who has not been to college. Also some of the school don’t care about how much your child learn but,rather or not if they cause any problems in school/class. @azreal, Apologies if I misspelled your name. You couldn’t have projected a better argument. The system does need revitalized from the top to the bottom. I worked with adjudicated and disadvantaged youth in many capacities for many years and I wouldn’t know where to begin to tell you how parental involvement changes things. While urban schools lack a lot of things suburban schools don’t, involvement is key. Last summer, in Montgomery county, (outskirts of Phila.), a predominantly white public school was going to cut some sports from their program. Guess what happened? Those parents got all up in arms and held protests, meetings etc., and even went to the local news. They were livid, long story short no sports were cut and the school board agreed to keep the programs for the next five years.
One of my previous jobs was a juvenile court advocate and I was very active with my kids to the point where the teachers called me and I knew more about them than their parents did. Some of the teachers told me, they’ve never seen nor heard from parents.
I remember I was taking a child to get his working papers and his cousin asked if he could go with us. I told him he needed to ask his mother and why couldn’t she take him? He said all my mom does is sit at home and watch TV, I asked her to take me a month ago.

I also want to mention that I live in the Detroit area. As many of you know, Detroit heavily relies on the auto industry. Here, there are generations of functionally illiterate people–people who have a reading level that is no higher than a fourth grader’s. There are also several more people, including some from the former group, who brushed off the idea of finishing high school-let alone college-in favor of working for one of the Big Three because of the big dollars they could earn as a line worker–that’s right, as a blue-collar, skilled or non-skilled non-degreed line worker.

Both of these groups had enjoyed the fruits of the Big Three for years. Some of these people made $65K, $75K, and even more just drilling a bolt in a car.

Now, with the economy in a downward spiral, many of these people lost their jobs and even took buy-outs. I’m talking about several hundreds of workers who know nothing else and cannot do anything else. What has now resulted is that some of these people (who are now in their 40′s and 50′s) are now what is called “displaced workers”, having to take large pay cuts or can’t find any work at all. Some, however, are going back to school to learn a new trade or get into a new career. How ironic that some of these were the same people who sniffed at higher learning, but are now enrolling in classes by the droves because they finally woke up.

If everyone knew everything when we finished high school (those of us who did), we would all be CEO’s by now. High school is foundation and college is development and character building. While life lessons are to be learned, your previous learning tools will shape the decisions one makes. Furthermore, we owe it to those that blazed the trail for us to have a seat in a classroom.

One problem that is overlooked by almost everyone I hear or read who talks about what is wrong with public education is who makes up the student body. Some schools will never be good schools regardless of how good the teachers are or how good the facilities are because of who’s enrolled at the schools. I haven’t been keeping up with all the charter school and voucher stuff, but for the most part, unless you have enough money to pick what neighborhood you live in or what school you send your child to, there is really no way to separate the children who “get it”(meaning they know why they are in school and they actually try to do schoolwork and don’t disrupt the class) from the ones who don’t. When the civil rights were fighting to desegregate black kids and white kids, they should have also been fighting to segregate well-behaved and motivated kids from poorly behaved and lazy kids.

Actually high school wasn’t a requirement until sometime in the 50′s. It became a requirement because of the lack of jobs.

I’ve worked with high school kids that came to me with such ugly baggage that it made you sick. If I had the baggage they came with, I don’t think I could have made it.

Adults make a difference. You’d be surprised at the difference caring adults can make. I’ve done it and witnessed it. The problem in the
schools 9 times out of 10 are the adults in the school. Naturally, the adults at home should be responsible, but you can’t teach an OLD DOG new tricks. You can teach a young dog new tricks. I’ll never give up on any young person.

I’ll never take the loser’s way out. Yea, a few can make it without an education, but they are very rare cases.

@north I used to think most of what I learned in college was useless considering more often 85% of the information isn’t retained BUT since I’ve changed positions I find my BA has served me well and will continue to do so even if I don’t practice what I learned daily and my school as more than prepared me for the real world. Any subject can prove useful–it really depends on how you apply it. Mathematics and science are obviously more practical subjects and help in areas such as medicine, engineering, etc. However, non-technical subjects are also useful; a degree in English can help prepare a person for a career in journalism, teaching, law, business and more. The same holds true for a degree in Anthropology; studying human behavior is very critical for consumer-based companies to survive because they need to understand the buying behavior of different demographic groups and understand the underlying causes. Behavioralists and pyschologists help them with this.

No corporation is going to hire just anyone off the street. Jobs are becoming more and more scarce and a new standard has been set. Now, jobs are being outsourced to other countries and they are sponsoring foreigners to fill posts that citizens cannot because many of us do not meet the requirement. But hey–if you think you can get ahead without a diploma, have at it. Just remember; the odds of you breaking into the NBA, NFL, the rap industry, or any other form of entertainment that negros have been dominating for the past 50 or so years, is quite small. But good luck with that!

You are more optimistic than I am maddox. I don’t have the desire to try to convince a bad kid why they should be good. Hell, seeing that I didn’t personally have issues at home, if I had gone to a school with better classmates, I may be better adjusted than I currently am, because I had half the equation in place. That’s why I say separate the well behaved kids from the badly behaved kids, so that whatever problems the bad kids bring from home don’t affect the good kids.

This will be a bad analogy, but I believe it is safe to assume that the people providing relief in Haiti are not giving medical help to those who aren’t injured or rescuing people who aren’t trapped. Inner city schools need a response similar to disaster relief, but there are many kids who don’t need to be rescued because they are not at risk. They need to be rescued from having to share the same space as their at-risk classmates. As I said in one of my previous posts, it wasn’t until I got to high school that I saw black kids who cared about good grades. So it is okay not to give up on kids that others have given up on, but it is also not okay for kids who have their head on straight to have to share a classroom with the kids who need rescuing from themselves.

The concept of a degree is to sort out those who can stay focused and accomplish a long term goal from those with less attention span.

We see education gradually turning into a two-edged lie: the young ones pretend to study, the older ones pretend to teach. The mighty energy of the human spirit gets squeezed out by the rigidity and inflexibility of educational technology.

The integrity of the child as an individual – indeed, the integrity of the environment – this is the mutual relationship of the two basic principles underlying the concept of the school as shared by myself and my like-minded colleagues. The very first lesson in the school ought to touch upon the meaning of human existence.

In our world today the whole educational curriculum is divided up into divergent layers, isolated from each other. The world of perception is transformed into isolated ‘corridors’ to such an extent that it is sometimes hard for the pupil to believe that they are all part and parcel of a single whole. Art draws its very strength from the fact that it synthesises fractionalised phenomena, offers a holistic system of education and child-raising, and inculcates a holistic world-view.

But art cannot fully address this question if children are not immersed in an atmosphere where genuine life-values are affirmed – an atmosphere of shared labour and searchings, where every lesson is permeated with a sense of creativity. Then we have something to think about. Then we have a basis on which children will be able to appreciate art with understanding. For if there is no opportunity to live and experience this high ideal first-hand, then the high ideal is not truly perceived – it remains an ideal in word only, and hence begins to compromise itself.

In our educational process we work on the basis of a three-part harmony: “I see – I analyse – I act.”

It is not just that we place our own tremendous emphasis on music, visual art and dance – they should make themselves felt in the school on a day-by-day basis, and this is the crux of the whole thing.

No programme, no methodology can in and of itself guarantee success in child-raising on the whole.

Together with the educators of the Children’s Music School in Kizliar (Daghestan), we emphasise the direct dependence of success in music on the level of a person’s overall development, rather than on any special, isolated musical talents. It turns out that skill on one area is manifest when skill is shown in many areas of life.

Young people often conquer summits simply because they have never been persuaded that these summits are unattainable. It is our view that skill in one area of activity is made up of skills in others. Talent is a whole network of different gifts. Which means the task of developing one set of skills is expanded when all of them are set in motion together. And to bring up a specialist, consequently, one has to bring out the overall Man – Man as a unified whole…

The negative thing about so many college-educated blacks either having no job or having bad jobs is that people who agree with game have evidence to support the idea that education does not matter. The public school system in urban areas, especially in California is full of s**t. No child left behind has turned our school system into a daycare. Most teachers don’t care about the students they teach and the youth no longer attain true knowledge. I find it sad when all schools care about now is how many students they can get to pass a state test instead of actually finding a way to reach kids and give them a love and thirst for knowledge. Sadly most schools in urban areas aren’t equipped to give students proper care. Classes are over crowded plus resource materials are outdated and worn. In 8th grade my math book was so worn out a teacher told me none of my work really mattered anyway just pass a test in the summer and I can go to high school. How the hell is this acceptable? In high school it was even worse so I dropped out and got my G.E.D. at 18. Society teaches you go to school and you’ll get a good job, go to school and you’ll be successful but that isn’t always the case. I know people with degrees that I make more money than. 1_fine_artist I don’t have a degree and neither does Game but both he and I are successful and managers. I’m not saying it isn’t good to get a degree and I am not knocking higher learning and neither is Game. The government doesn’t control colleges but it does control K-12 and that’s what he was talking about. I didn’t take trig so does that mean that those who did take trig are better than I? And then you want to go to the statistics of the drop outs selling drugs. And why did we sell drugs? Because we are stuck in the society of fast money and a crappy education system that goes hand in hand my brother that is where the term product of my environment comes into play. Everyone tends to become a product of their environment. Suburban kids tend to become successful because are privileged enough to have a better school system and environment that urban areas don’t have. I’m not giving people an excuse for their actions but these are facts which is why most people of color move out of the “hood”.

One of the best things college can do is show you options you never knew existed before.

The context I was talking in earlier about drug dealing was that those without educations are much easier targets for law enforcement.
In actuality only 6% of the total new inmates are young black men.
The 34% everybody always talks about is those with LONG sentences who skew the averages when most people get out between 1-3 yrs.
Those long sentences are because of drug charges.
You can kill, rape, and rob a bank and get less time than being caught selling crack.
Not to mention that people selling it are selling to their friends and family which does the most damage to the community they come from.
What I said earlier is that degree isn’t a guarantee it’s a key.
A degree proves to the world that you can finish a task that reuires thinking which = trust. If you ever open up your own business thats an instant asset. When people get degrees and cant find work later its often because they didn’t set up things in their last 2 yrs of school like internships to network and get people interested in them in their field. You can’t just take classes and a job magically happen when you finish. I’d tell every black student to take also business classes so that they will be able to open up a business upon graduation and know what they are doing to succeed.

Of course there are people with degrees that you make more money than especially since you know some out of work.
But if you stacked those with degrees next to those without you’d see more money on the side of the degrees. The higher your degree the more money you will tend to make for doing less and less.
Just watch some top level business people sometime. Most of the time they just sit in meetings and tell somebody else what needs to be done.

But you CAN be better prepared from taking classes.

It’s about what’s between your ears and what you do with it.
The suburbs do have better schools so when they mess up anyway then that’s the proof that it’s personal choice to do so with NO excuses.

I don’t know how it was for other people but for me I think growing up in the ghetto has something to do with why I am having trouble utilizing my education to get me out. It would have been nice to have had constant exposure to people who had been through college and could have told me how best to spend my time there. It would have been nice to know in the beginning what career I wanted to pursue and how to pursue it and it would have been great to know when I started that bachelor’s degrees don’t mean s**t anymore instead of having to find out by not getting a good job.

It also doesn’t help that the best way to get jobs is through networking since what I had to deal with from my classmates has made me afraid of most social situations. I usually don’t talk when I go out because what I went through makes me uncomfortable to share anything about myself because I don’t want to get laughed at. And it all started because I took school seriously because I truly believed that it would lead to a better life than the one I experienced growing up, but I was forced to go to school with kids who would have been better off staying home.

The conspirators are whoever spread the story to black children that the alrernative to going to public school is to do nothing, as opposed to fight to actually learn something. I just hope that I am eventually strong enough to overcome the damage to my assertiveness that kids with the game’s mentality caused.

I read your most recent post and can certainly empathize with how hard it is to find a job, especially that will directly utilize my degree. I myself have a B.A. in English Literature. After graduation, I applied to publishing houses on the East Coast, and got nothing. I ended up becoming a legal assistant, but that job was a disaster. However, I sallied forth and am now working in sales/business development. I’ve been in this field for around nine years now, in various industries. Have I utilized my English degree? In some ways, yes–I know how to write really great e-mails! LOL..just kidding. Seriously, no one ever really winds up doing what they set out to do. I once heard a career expert state that the average person changes careers at least four or five times in his or her lifetime. So don’t think you’re the only one.

You mentioned that a bachelor’s degree doesn’t mean anything anymore. In many ways, this is so true. A BA is like a high school diploma now; it’s expected that you have one if you are entering Corporate America. Even some lower-paying entry-level jobs that don’t require much use of your brain require a college degree. I think this partly due to the image companies want to portray of having an educated workforce. Besides, if those who are in college are more than likely to be exposed to people from other backgrounds and learn to interact with these people on a level much different from, say, someone who lives in South Dakota who has only seen a black person on t.v.

That said, I think blacks and hispanics should seek advance degrees to help increase their chances of getting hired.

Networking definitely helps. I have mentioned this several times before when rebuttaling what-his-name on this thread. However, diligence pays off. Crafting a resume that will get you an interview also helps.

If you don’t mind me asking, what do you want to do for a career? What are you doing now? What kind of experience do you have? What state do you live in?

I ask you this because although I cannot promise you anything, I may be able to pass along your inquiry to people that I know who may be hiring. However, I would need to see a copy of your resume (just exclude your name, address and other personal contact info).

EVERY country keeps track of its people (and non-citizens). They have to–for security reasons and otherwise!

It doesn’t take a mental midget like The Game to figure this out. However, how do you think data mining helps companies? Tracking buying behaviors (especially in real time) help companies predict what your next purchase will likely be. It’s called predictive analysis.

I’m at least glad The Game has triggered an interesting conversation. Not all education is good education. I, for one, am a college educated, software technology businessman, so i am quite familiar with education and the importance of the RIGHT education. Having had a chance to analyze the education system (I wrote a blog about it on my page), i have concluded that it is incomplete and imperfect across the board, especially in the non technical/scientific areas. That’s not to say we should not strive to get educated, but we should always question the source of that education and make sure that out own religious beliefs (especially for Christians) is not compromised, blinding us to spiritual truth.

In history, for example, we are taught maybe 10% of the truth about what really happened, especially between the Revolutionary Era (French and American revolutions) and World War II. In medicine, medical students are not taught full healthcare options that could help us live past 100 yrs old. In technology, engineering students are not taught all of the latest technologies (some technologies are kept very confidential). So do get educated, but be sure to fully get what you are paying for, even demanding to get as close to 100% of what you need as possible. And educate yourself in your spare time.

The Game’s comment are stupid, however he does have point. When was the last time you ever needed to find the Cosine or Tangent of a triangle in your adult life?

I didn’t read all the comments so I don’t know if this has already been mentioned, but I’m gonna go ahead and sum up the whole situation like this: Right message, WRONG mouthpiece.

It ain’t so much the fact he bangs or whatever, that has nothin to do with it…to keep it all the way 100, a lot of the REAL “gangstas” I know (those who are in the life for survival rather than popularity) are actually fairly intelligent, much more than they’d ever get credit for. Now the perpetrators, that’s a whole other story. But I digress. The point I’m makin is, this statement would have been SO much more digestible comin from a KRS-One, a Chuck D, dead prez, Killer Mike, Wise Intelligent, etc…not from someone like Game, who just says random s**t every couple weeks or so solely for the shock value. The names I just mentioned could have said the exact same words as Game, and the more educated readers would be more likely to at least try and understand the logic behind what those artists were tryin to say.

Now as far as my take on the educational institution, I feel it’s no more on the level than any of the other instituions our country has in place…from the political institution, to the monetary institution, to the religious instution, they’re all in place and the way they are for a calculated reason; only a fool blinded by the sheep mentality would believe otherwise. It’s ALL there to keep me and everyone on this board in pocket, don’t think it ain’t. One need look no further than the warped “history” they pimp on us…they act like they care SO much about Black History Month and civil rights, yet you’ll never see a cirriculum in any public school that tells the REAL story of the Panthers and the stories of cats like Huey P., Mutulu Shakur, Geronimo Pratt, H. Rap Brown, etc. Yeah they tell us about how James Earl Ray was the one who pulled the trigger in Memphis that day in April, but I can’t be the only one that noticed how they so conveniently left out the part about skirt-wearin J. Edgar Hoover’s role in all that. This is nothin new…hell Laurence Fishburne brought it all to light nearly 20 years ago in Boyz N the Hood: “Y’know that test is culturally biased, the only part that’s universal is the math.” He wasn’t bs’in.

The way I see it…aside from social skills and “teamwork” skills or whatever, there’s REALLY not a whole lot any public school will every teach you that you can’t learn just as easily by goin to the public library and pickin up some books on whatever it is you’re tryin to learn. Perfect example…a few years ago I decided to go back to school cuz I have a knack for fixin computers, and I wanted that piece of paper sayin I know how to do so. Unfortunately due to a string of deaths of loved ones in less than a month’s time I had to withdraw a year in…but it wasn’t til after I withdrew that it dawned on me, I didn’t know S**T more about fixin computers comin out than I did goin in!! It wasn’t that I wasn’t applyin myself, I pulled A’s and B’s the entire time…I just wasn’t bein taught what I really needed to be knowin. After that I decided if anyone was gonna teach me it would be ME. Picked up any book I could get my hands on regardin computers…and if there’s somethin I need to know on the fly I’ll just hit the ‘Net and get the whole breakdown in 10 min. or less…for FREE.

Point bein, education is the KEY, KNOWLEDGE IS POWER…and quite honestly, I didn’t see anything where Game disputed that fact. He said THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM are what’s bunk, and he was absolutely correct. Name one thing with the word “public” in it that’s EVER been good…public schools, public bathrooms, public healthcare, public housing…every last one of em’s bogus as all hell!! You don’t need to be educated on THEIR terms to acquire that knowledge though. Your local library has a book on ANY subject you’re interested in, guaranteed. And let’s just be real, it’s 2010 people…this monster we call the Internets can make the average Joe Schmoe from the block privy to information he didn’t even know that he didn’t know, long as he just has sense enough to seek out new information. It’s thanks to the ‘Net that I was able to further open my OWN eyes far as the world around me, and able to have a lot of questions answered as well as some long-held suspicions reinforced. I’ll put it like this, I’ve learned so much more on my own in the 12 years since I graduated high school than I EVER learned the entire 13 years where I was nothin more than just another test score. With that in mind, I have a 1 1/2 year old daughter, and I’ve already made up my mind that she’s gonna be homeschooled cuz I REFUSE to let her be programmed to become just another cog in the machine, a spoke in the wheel. I want her to be up on the REAL history and issues she’ll be facin in the real world. I’m not talkin that bulls**t street s**t either, I’m speakin of the business world, community/cultural issues, things of that nature. Long as I’m able to do that and raise an INDIVIDUAL instead of a drone, I’ll have done my part.

Matter of fact, speakin of dead prez…they DID speak on this very matter, the song’s called “They Schools”. I ain’t heard that joint in forever either, I’m gonna put it on right d@mn now…

YoUnG_pSyLeNt has a point the only subject with any real foundation and revelance is math and probably science. Not to sound racist but the English and Reading courses is basically learning European language. The Social Studies courses rarely touch on real society and history you already know was written by the winners. If your in school though don’t drop out but don’t limit yourself just because you are not. As for the government part you have the phone, cell, internet, social sites, credit cards, airport travel, passport, license, bank account; I don’t think they just need school to keep up with us, maybe to brainwash though.

Other than math and science, most people could teach themselves the subjects they teach in school and learn more than they ever could in school.
