I’ve read a lot of the comments from HelloBeautiful, GIANT, and TheUrbanDaily.com and in the end, what I’ve learned is that there are some pretty interesting conversations that get started here. Let me share with you one of them…

One of the hot button topics on The Urban Daily was our piece on Angelica Curves. It caused a lot of commotion in the comments section (something we appreciate, greatly). It brought up the interesting notion on something that has me wondering: What is BlackPlanet, really?

Man…she ain’t even black! :) Seen finer in Inglewood. What’s up with that? If you’re gonna put a latina at least put one up with a black booty or of black ancestry to represent! No disrespect to my latina mamis out there. ;)

- marcusstallion1

These women are not even black. They are MIXED ! Have you ever seen a pure black person. Horrible hair and wide noses and so black they look purple. I thought this was BLACK planet. Keep other races out or change the name and get over slavery.

- BLACKDIAMOND184

Outside of the twenty million-plus members who are in the BlackPlanet Universe, the stereotype is that it’s home to sex fiends looking to hook up with one another and aren’t worried about much of anything. But from groups like ~Sy & Coke’s BOOM BOOM Room~ to Naruto: Anime, Games, and Pics, BlackPlanet is more than just the stereotype.

Quite honestly, who’s to say that BLACKDIAMOND184 is even Black. She may be as white as her BP profile is. I thought the point of the Civil Rights movement was to include all races, not to discriminate. I ran into this same type of issue over at HipHopDX.com’s Beauty & Brains section. If I picked a girl too dark, then she was a bush batch. If she was too light, they’d ask where’s the dark-skin women at.

I don’t get it. In a changing world climate, with both young and old realizing that something has to be done, I ask you, “What is BlackPlanet, really…?” Are we focused on our own individual expression? Or is BlackPlanet a place where folks are just following the pack? Are we the people who are open to all things? Or are we closed-minded?

Even before Facebook and MySpace, BlackPlanet was a unique voice. Now BlackPlanet has been eclipsed. It takes challenging voices like Indianapolis’s own PrettyChocolateEyez to put the pressure on us, the media, to step our game up:

Angelica Curves is typical. Give me something that we haven’t seen before. The fair complexion, long hair and skimpy swim suits are the norm. Real beauty is when you can take a snap shot (no airbrushing) and be amazed by what you see. Angelica you are beautiful with no question but I’ve seen you before.

- PrettyChocolateEyez

Our job here at The Urban Daily is to keep you in tune to the hottest trends, clothes, music, gadgets, games, etc. — set to the beat of your individual drum. Over the last few years, we’ve linked our lives to the digital world. As more social networks pop up, BlackPlanet has managed to stay the only spot where Black folks can come and take off their shoes and relax for a while.

But now is a beautiful time to try something different, to be different. The choice is yours to redefine the Matrix.  Figuring out that answer will be an intriguing one and I challenge you, BlackPlanet members, to present the example of yourself that you want us to see.

In the meantime and in-between time, yours truly will be here to join in the conversation and have some fun with y’all.

…Besides, I got my eye on someone to date for Single in the CityMaybe some stereotypes aren’t that bad.

Ahh, this was written in the spirit of Obama’s victory speech. “Be a part of the change you want to see…”

    I can dig it.

BP is as diverse as the folks who visit it,and its always evolving. Island folks, Southern Folks, Mixed Folks all bringing unique “black” perspectives to the Planet.

BP is hardly the place to bring about cultural “change”. This passive approach is whats kept us dodging true accountability and achieving very little results in the process. Real change comes through Real World action. Hewey , Malcolm, Marcus and all others before them brought about this change the grassroots way.

Thankfully they were leaders and knew exactly what changes were necessary.

To define a planet would be a mistake.

to me all the hype about other races using black planet is just that hype! How many “black” patrons post totally fake pics and profiles on bp? I guess part of the allure of the internet world is that here you can be whatever you desire. Personally if you got heart enough to proclaim the real like I do…I gotta respect that. Nasheeda

why the “dark” skinned “light” skinned when we as nubians come in soooooooo many wonderful shades. I happen to be “light” skinned both of my parents are brown or what you call BLACK.Needless to say I am very proud of who I am,not to mention I’ve been here since 1974 and I’ve not yet seen any one of us who consider ourselves BLACK actually this shade of BLACK. KNOW WHO YOU ARE! DON’T DAMN ME FOR SLAVERY AND BEING LIGHT SKINNED. TAKE TIME TO DAMN THOSE OF THE BROWN RACE WHO DECIDED TO CROSSOVER INTO OTHER RACES AND DESTROY WHAT YOU CONSIDER BLACK! OH AND YOUR SLAVEMASTER whos’ name you probably still wake up with and go by on a daily basis. HOW BLACK ARE YOU??????

It seems like some (not all) black people have a fickle mind when it comes to ‘blackness’ or being black. When we are among each other, it seems that we want to be considered anything but who we are. You’ve seen it, people who are black as Westley Snipes with every race box checked that they have available. Or the notorious, “i have INDIAN in my family”. Then once anyone outside our race has anything to say remotely close to race, we’re all Angela Davis’ and Huey Newtons on their asses. Blackplanet, in my opinion, is not a place only for black people. Its a site just like all other popular websites, but from a “black” perspective. But then again, thats just my opinion.

Its funny how if you go to Mi Gente.com there are mostly latino people on there. If you go to Asian Avenue.com they mostly have asians. On BlackPlanet.com most of the people on here aren’t even black.

    What’s up with that?

wow. i want the time back it took to read this bullshyt. if bp wants to feature a latina, then fine. but using tired excuses like ur trying something “different” to defend ur decision to do so is pathetic. the truth is using mixed/light skinned/latinas is far from being different, but rather the same old game the media has always played. the day i see blackplanet use and feature dark skinned models to the point where ppl are whining about it, i’ll eat my hat. maybe i’m just not noticing them but i highly doubt that is the case. blackplanet is very typical in the fact that not unlike most other publications aimed at black folk it has a very limited ideology of what is considered “beautiful”. usually that doesn’t include broad noses, nappy hair, or skin darker than a paper bag. which is fine. this is the world that we live in. just because these traits are excluded from what is typically seen as beautiful, doesn’t mean that they aren’t. and bp does act as a platform where people who do know better than to buy into the bullshyt can get together and share ideas (and no, that doesn’t just have to include black people). but please – cut the crap. don’t take old ideas and try to peddle them as “different” or innovative, or new! us black folk aren’t all so dumb. we do know whats going on – even when it is the same old bullshyt

I see that we are still in the discourse on what defines blackness; and the relevancy of being black. Have we not learned over the years, that blackness need no definition…and skin hue is really a consequence of birth…and selective evolutionary progression.

But here in America, we taken it to the level of defining, what is black, and what is not. It is purely divisiveness, to devote so much intellectual energy, on the subject. And to embrace the concept of what defines blackness, ti to engage in the Eurocentric perception, of what defines, the non-European person. But ultimate, when we are cut, do we not all bleed the same color. And in sorrow and pain; do we not grieve in our loss. Black Planet is a business, like other business. It provides a forum for those to seek relationships..find common interest…engage in private, and open conversation.
But is not the privy of a singularly defined race.

.wow a visit to my page has brought me to this..I would like to answer this from my point of view. Black planet was and to me still a networking tool. ever since I joined I have seen many races here..and I think it is great..A big melting pot.Now I am not into the race stuff but I remember that an ounce of black you all black..ok enough being cynical. But really what better way to get in the mix of networking for whatever reason all across the globe. And this was before any other site of facebook, myspace etc..so I believe you get out of anything what you put into anything..and one thing black planet isn’t is a black hole. so to end this question..bp is a melting pot of collective ideas and inspirations and expressions and yes more people of color is here If it started out as such for black people only then thank God like all people places and things..they have become inter grated..no fight here.

One day at a time to build a future.
    smooches and happy holidays

Most of the people on BP are black. I think there are more people on BP than Migente and AA combined. There jsut happens to be more minority’s on BP than either one of the other sites to. I actually kidna like this site moreso than Mypsace. Not as many private profiles and people actually respond to my messages moreso than mypspace.

Whats wrong w/ that????

The sister is beautiful and (obviously) is a sister of color.

Some of the comments are truly

    asinine: MrK
    rhetorical: – BLACKDIAMOND184
    ignorant: marcusstallion1

BlackPlanet, to me, is not a racial (color) thing, but a mindset thing.

The actual users of Black Planet ae the people who make Black Planet what it willbe and what it will not be.

Marketing is ok. Personally as a Sister who is Light in Color, I consider myself to be a Black Woman. My ansectry includes Lumbee, Caucasion and Lord knows who else.

Think. CIvilization started in EGYPT the land of the Colored People.. so in fact we are are ONE race. Just rasied in different classes.

When Barack Obama was overwhleming elected he set a new Bar. A bar which we must step up to and rid ourselves of these self defacing comments (for when we diss otehrs we are really dissing ourselves).

BlackPlanet (the mindset) is about networking, grassroots community involvement, communication, economic development, cohesiveness in admissions and goals.

It celebrates humanity and allows you to be you, or whoever you want to be! It’s challenging and addictive. To put it in a nutshell, BlackPlanet is what YOU make of it!

I think blackplanet is great, and i know to each his own, so they say, but i think it is disgusting the way some females present themselves, is nakedness is a way of getting attention, then god help you, you’re degrading yourself and the website, that goes for you guys, pornography should be seriously prohibited on BP. There are decent, god worshipping people affiliated with this site, this is deplorable, and should not be tolerated. God fearing people don’t want to see this abomination, embarrassment to decent people.

black planet it what you make it. women and men look for love both get suckered. Women are lured by booty calls, and men are returning home with there wallets lighter than when they came. Black Planet it’s doing nothing that ain’t in the norm noone stays a virgin forever!!! as with the time so does the world change. all of these young women having babies thinking there grown leaves the children with nothing to look up to who is he gonna learn from? His 9th grade drop-out mother. Or his father that’s in jail over street cred….Here’s a good one his 30 year old grandma. Not to metion the video’s talking bout blunts 40′s a b***hes. As F-A-B-L-O-U-S would say if you can’t be used your useless, we control this s**t. we could build ourselves up as a whole and pimp this world by getting in places with power and bring our brothers and sisters up.Or we can keep doing what we been doing applying for walfare checking the MAN’S coat and keep wishing we were him. What is BlackPlanet really? To me it’s the embodiment of all of my sisters and brothers with varying shades of black and physique that runs the gamut of strong African features to the potporri mixed culture coming together to express themselves. BlackPlanet also gives others a glimpse into our lives and ideals which isn’t monolithic but evolving, provoking, and insightful.

Beauty is always in the eyes of the beholder but inner confidence speaks louder than the outer appearance. On BlackPlanet there’s that allowance of the inner confidence to be spoken, even expressed on each individual’s page. That’s my 5 dollar comment for now.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/HunnyOne/ HunnyOne

who cares if its called black planet? the comment in the article is pure arrogance! So you tell me that if we had something called white planet that people wouldn’t be offended? Its a free country and discrimination against the color of someone’s skin is ridiculous. Take a knife and cut me. I bet I bleed the same color as you. I have a nose, two ears, two eyes, and a mouth.. so please tell me what is so different between the races? Maybe the experiences you’ve faced in life or where you grew up, but we all go through struggles and life changing experiences. Get over the race issue and move on!!! It’s 2008 and it still amazes me how many arrogant people are out there!

    As salaamu alaikum,

Well, I been a member of BP since it started. I had to go through a couple of different profiles as I was not muslim when i first joined BP. I was very much accepted and loved on BP as I showed my beauty not my booty. Now that I display my religion without question I get a little haterism going on, but i do get a lot of love as well. But please dont hate me because I am modest, dont hate me because I want to cover, dont hate me because I want to be chaste….Dont judge a book by its cover I am black not Arab ot middle eastern…so I love Bp because its where I can connect with my people of color and that is all different colors….Im here to stay..

The important thing is that there truly IS someone for every one. Now Angelica doesn’t have nearly enough curves to turn my head — though she IS quite attractive. I just like the true “thickalicious” type — 38/30/52 — booty everywhere! But for every body type known to man, there is SOMEONE who not only tolerates you — that person PREFERS you. Quit trippin’ and just go out and find your own “imperfect ideal”!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Servant2All/ Servant2All

…and by the way, the dating scene is only a PART of what Black Planet is about. My initial introduction here was to drum up more of an audience for my internet radio show. I’ve gotten many a professional contacts, trying to sell me on some home-based business or another and I have shared with them a venture or two that I was in to. I write a little myself and have gotten encouragement from other writers and given props as well. Matter of fact I landed at THIS post after receiving a friend request from a fellow writer — one Kevin L. Clark. No, BP is still a place where intellectual pursuit happens — but with a lot of “eye candy”!

Kevin, I feel the same way PrettyChocolateEyez does. When I saw Ms. Curves my thoughts were she is pretty but no different than the many video or magazine models we see daily (with no booty). I understand what you are saying with how darker complexed women are not repped often and then when a woman is very dark statements are made about her complexion. It is funny (not really) because some Black men seen to push off darker women while Black women love a deep chocolate brother.

I guess you have to make the best of this resource. I have met many interesting individuals on Black Planet. Some were positive and some were just idiots. I’ve learned to turn my head and ignore the idiots. I just wonder if this is their punk way of dealing with their issues. To just coward behind the internet. I’m pretty sure most would not behave this way in person. Black Planet is an outlet for some to just show their true colors.

    Kevin,

I thought BP was all about CULTURE. If it weren’t, then yall should’ve done like some organizations do and put racial rules and regs on becoming a member. For example, you should be at least 25% African American to become a BP member. How crazy would that be? At least those who complain now wouldn’t have that to complain about anymore. But trust me, they would find SOMETHING to whine about…they ALWAYS do.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/marvin_lee_jr/ marvin_lee_jr

I’ll keep this brief. I don’t know what BlackPlanet REALLY is. I do know you can find whatever you’re looking for and that’s inclusive enough for me. I’m a Boomer and I joined a private group for those over 50 with over 1k members of all persuasions…great people all. I don’t go looking for the “noise” of the intolerant so I don’t find it.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/original_sexy216/ original_sexy216

What is BlackPlanet, really? My interpretation of BP is…a place that is devoid of cultural and racial boundaries…hence the BLACK-PLANET. I feel BP is a cyber-universe where the grown and sexy can come to 2 express themselves, network, date and even a safe-haven to purge the soul, ventilate your mind and dare I say find redemption or spiritual liberation in an almost anonymous way. I say let these ppl, no matter the race, sexual orientation or religious beliefs do thier thang. Let Angelica Curves get her money the best way she knows how…she will have to stand in front of the God of her belief and be held accountable for her actions just like U and I.

You know theresa has a point it shouldn’t matter what color you are because, these days white people think they are black and some black people think they are white. So what does it really most black people has white in them anyway. Think about it for a moment, back in the day when the white man was raping the black women just because they could where’s the pure black in that, considering that fact, ask yourslf this question. Is there truely any pure black people.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/brilliantrose/ brilliantrose

this article was very good and well responded to. it’s amazing that we can still get so riled up about skin, beauty and race. I got news for you we are sooo much bigger than these issues. at the end of the day skin does not matter. Black have to unlearn the notion that it dos which has benn drilled into us for over 200 years. While we may be the mionority in america, remeber we are the majority in the world. People of color are the majority. We do not havee to conform to anyone’s idea of beauty. Tell yourself to unlearn the notion that a person’s skin color can have meaning or even be intimidating. Self love is the first law. Look in the mirror for a long time and breathe then smile at yo beautiful black self

Ok here’s the deal… Black people are still psychologically dependent on the white world to tell them who they are.. that’s why you see a lot of BS on here.. Lets be serious all these women showing their assets like their in a music video and men talking about how much money they stack is feeding into all stereotypes orchestrated by white corporate America. Black Planet is typical of the black culture all the potential for greatness but no follow through or discipline to think for oneself.. I don’t think Black Planet is black owned at all. Great post it has inspired me to create a new BP page..

    What is BlackPlanet REALLY?

I believe BlackPlanet is many things to the people who have chosen to be here. We all have our specific reasons for joining– whether it is to have a forum for airing our discontent or to declare our joy from the rooftops; from hawking our respective wares (business), to showing the world what we’re working with physically, intellectually, etc. In some cases, we’re here simply to find that significant other or the unconditional love that sometimes comes from someone who only knows us virtually.

BlackPlanet is a place that we come to air our progressive voices so that they can be heard above the din. It is a place where people of varied cultural experiences and diverse ethnic backgrounds come to reach out to each other to find a common purpose or ground. I know people who even use BlackPlanet as a place of respite where they just want to carve out their own little personal oasis. But above all, I see BlackPlanet as a place where black folk can come and not feel overlooked or marginalized based on a hue or a texture of hair, or the shape of a nose or the size of a lip. This is our little spot where we would expect to see ourselves reflected in generally the same ways and quantities that we see in our real life communities.

Finally, I see BlackPlanet as a virtual trailblazing social-networking community where black folk especially, see images of our own beauty reflected at all times. A place where every one of our incredibly beautiful shades– from deep, dark, cocoa-satin, to mocha-cappuccino and crème-fraîche– are presented in your branded communications and content with EQUAL deliberation, heft, focus, commitment and fervor. This way as we see more “balance” being shown, we can begin to shift away from the distracting conversations about color-distinctions, and begin to work on learning how to better relate and communicate with each other; how to better support each other, and become better assets to our families and communities. It would also help to promote and encourage the self-love that is so acutely missing from our ranks right now.

All of this, of course, while remaining open, respectful, and inclusive of others who may not necessarily share our common cultural bonds, but who share in our energy of love, pride, support and unity.

I do not get it. Defining Black Planet is like trying to define what Black is. Just as Black is a state of being so is Black Planet. Do not get me wrong, we are “Black”, “African American” or what ever the word of the year is for us, but we are not defined by hair, shade of skin, movement, speech, body build or facial stucture; this varies with each individual. We are so much more then any one of those things anyway. Just an FYI, there is not one American born Black that can claim to be of pure blood, so lighten up and open and just enjoy what comes your way.

to be honest, blackplanet is a joke.. for the years i hadnt been on here, my life was never involved or dealt with so many ghetto, thirsty acting ppl.. but now that im back on here, i thought i was going to meet more ppl who like myself: in school, have a job, etc.. im finding that its impossible to share real conversations with anyone on here.. guys are always sending messages about your body or wat they want to do with your body. females are using their page as a platform to become strippers or pros.. its sad and a waste of a site. its time for BLACKPLANET to come correct and start really cracking down on this behavior. this is why im in facebook more often and can know that i will never have to deal with this disappointing behavior from my own ppl. black folks are always complaining about stereotypes or how they are being disrespected, but if you dont correct those who are in your own community to stop it, then we will always have to deal with it.. time for BLACKPLANET to mature.

Sometimes i decide i need to blow it up, and find a few new, decent people to talk to. BlackPlanet seems to always have a few good women on here. I use this as a medium for information as well. I love reading the stories posted here. It’s so hard describing this place. I love this place. It’s my favorite place online.

I am reading Obama’s autobiography ‘Dreams From My Father’ and was moved by the how much his sense of dispossession growing up was due to being from a mixed race background. We are all part of the one race…the human race and prejudice from whatever perspective is wrong. That is why I relax on BP even though I am white. I enjoy meeting interesting and intelligent people and I have found many on BP..so that is what it is to me… a place to keep good company. I love it here!

    What is Black Planet?

To me, Black Planet reminds me of my time at St Augustine’s College, a HBCU. Being ablt to discuss deep thoughts with people just like me open and freely, the ability to view some of the most beautiful women in the world, and to stay on top of issues that affect me.

What more could I ask for?

Now I know that we should out in the world, trying to bring people together and not seperating, but sometimes you need that place that you can go and be naturally you. Like the barber shop or the beauty, Black Planet in the online version where, I as a black man can go and be, simply,…me.

hello beautiful kings and qeens out there I’m a proud latina! but i don’t date latinos no disrespect but my real attractions is to beautiful PEOPLE in general. I am rasta and i’ve been on BP since 2002 and i love meeting great friends and networking. I’m sorry you feel that way about different races on BP but really WHAT WOULD I REALLY HAVE IN COMMON WITH A SIGHT OF MEXICANS WHEN 85% of my friends are jamaican, african and african american? I’m in a beautiful relationship now i only lookd for friends and new places to live.” all men and woman are created equal” for the men that come to only look for white women then they have a problem. but much luv to all that is looking for a deep bound between someone else Blackplanet is a beautiful place to meet. I believe the men/women of another race coming on here to find a african beauty then more power to them

to me weither you are black white or latino whatever you can unite together as one. if this was white planet there would be over a million members on this website just that simple so she aint even fully black is straight bulls**t because in all actuallity we are all mixed in some form of way weither you are light skin are really dark skin it doesn’t matter. so if u wanna know what black planet is to me it is suppose to stand for unity like martin luther king wanted, even with all the bulls**t of online smashin and lack of many problems that alot of people have personally we all are in unity regardless of ethnic background. to me this is a place where i can unite with people who are different from in characteristic traits and physical.

Black planet is a fun site that sometimes contradicts it self. The site should really change the name because the skin deep beauties of the week are very much mixed. Black people emulate white mobsters with names like capone who didn’t even like black people. I like the site it has so much more potential they just need to change the name to mixed planet or something.

Let me clear up some things for you son.You said “Quite honestly, who’s to say that BLACKDIAMOND184 is even Black. She may be as white as her BP profile is. I thought the point of the Civil Rights movement was to include all races, not to discriminate”. Why did you assume I was black in the first place if you talk about including all races ?Also I am a male of course and I didn’t even have anything on my profile how is my profile White ?. Tell me What makes a “black” profile ? To tell you the truth if I didn’t see a picture of you I would guess you were white with a name like Kevin. It’s funny my real name is blacker than yours if you wanna get stereo typical.

Blackplanet is what it is. Just like BET(Black Entertainment Television) doesn’t necessarily depict black culture to the fullest, neither does Blackplanet. Many stereotypes about black people and black culture are at times reinforced in an enviroment like this where there is so much overt sexual innuendo and at times the imagery on this site looks like it’s straight out of a bootleg rap video. That isn’t Blackplanet’s fault since inviduals more than anything else make a community and are responsible for how they portray themselves. Sometimes living in a small ass city like I do has jaded my opinions about the opposite sex but I’ve been elightened by many women of color on this site who live in other parts of the country and who think, act totally different than what I am accustomed to. I think this site is slowly catering more to a younger audience(25 and under). When or if blackplanet becomes an exact replica of myspace then I’ll probably cancel my account. I like the fact that Blackplanet isn’t as mainstream as myspace because it would become more watered down and a brotha would have to weed through more bulls**t and delete more spam comming from individuals posing as pale white barbie dolls.

BlackPlanet is where I explore myself with expressed thought-words and find out with greater certainty just how I fare outside my self with others like and unlkike me. It is good to know one’s self, so that when one looks into the mirror of someone else’s thought-words and sees one’s self, there is an assurance one will never be lost or stolen. (Maybe I’ll take this up at another time.)

We are all responsible for what BlackPlanet is, staff and members alike. Nature abhors a vacuum so if you feel BP is lacking in a certain area then maybe it is your position to fill that void of what you feel is necessary. Celebrating BlackPlanet’s 10th anniversary where other social networking sites have not had such longevity makes me understand that whatever we think BP is, it is a blessing and a unique chapter in internet history. Whether you adore or loathe BP it deserves your respect just like the oldest living relative at your family reunion.
