monique

In a recent interview with the New York Times, comedian Mo’Nique defends her decision to not participate in any of the Oscar buzz surrounding her outstanding performance in the highly successful film Precious.

“Anytime I’ve been given an award, it has been because of the performance; what else goes into it?” she said, appearing genuinely mystified. “Look, it makes me appreciative any time someone says they may want to honor your performance. I’m appreciative at any talk in reference to any award, but there’s not much I can do about it now. The performance is done.”

Monique Channeled Own Abuse For Role In “Precious”

Film Critics Association Selects “Precious” As Top Film Of 2009

I have to applaud her for taking this stance and refusing to give into the brown-nosing that comes around when it’s time to talk Oscar nominations.  The Oscars are given in recognition of an actor’s outstanding performance in a film, not based on participation in press junkets.  If everyone feels that her performance is worthy of an Oscar, what difference does it make whether or not she goes on every talk show or does interviews with every magazine and newspaper to promote the film?  Enough buzz was generated about her performance before the movie even hit theaters that it really wasn’t necessary! It’s difficult to read an article about the film that does not glowingly fawn over Mo’Nique’s performance and/or that of her co-star Gabourey Sidibe.

So again, kudos to Mo’Nique for making it about her art, and not about the cult of celebrity. If only more of her peers could let their work speak for itself without being attention whores…

At first i didnt understand where Mo was coming from until now—-now i understand—–shes letting the work stand on its qwn and speak on its own instead of trying to hustle it and get her face everywhere she goes, but a lot of the cast have been somewhat like that when they promoted it—even mimi (b4 palm springs..LOL!), trying to let movie brethe on its own and let the public feel it. Kudos to you Mo!—but u know that statment u made and the way you carried yourselve is gonna make people want to get a nd even more, right? ;;;;;;;;;;)

I applaud Mo’Nique for being real and not puckering up to Hollywood. Let the film speak for itself. I think Mo’Nique did the film
for herself, not thinking about any rewards. Black folks need to come out in the open about this abuse. We were told what happens in families, stays in families and many times in Churches. These sadistic deeds are always done by people we trust. This sadistic insanity needs to be exposed and erradicated and the abusers jailed. She was a victim of sexual abuse by her 16 year old brother when she was 7 or 8.

..And this way, she’s letting God put her up so she won’t be obligated to Hollywood!

    YOU GO MO’NIQUE!

This woman was AMAZING! I mean AMAZING in this film! I could NOT stop myself from the years that she invoked! That IS AN ACTRESS! I have been a fan of this sista since she got it started and I am so happy to see her being recognized for her talents.

It is SO REFRESHING to see someone STAY GROUNDED! That means she CAN NOT BE BOUGHT. I see this woman around for many many years to come and she will be another gem added to Black Hollywood!

    Silly ghetto mentality.

You got nominated because people liked your performance, the least you could is go on some shows (ALL of which are better than yours) and talk about why you chose the role and how you crafted it to fit yourself.

“Genuinely mystified”, please, in six months, this lazy slob will be begging people to point a camera in her direction.

I watched Precious twice and while it was a good film I wasn’t blown away by it. Monique’s performance was a little over exaggerated and the other actress sounded like she was mumbling some of the time.I watched it twice because I wanted to see if I was missing something but I wasn’t.Should’ve read the book instead

I did not seethe movie and could not watch this movie. …too dark, depressing for me. Right now, presonally, I just don’t want to see a dark ,depressing movie.

I hear her performance was really ,yeah, that good.Oscar worthy.
I agree with Mo’nique that her performance is her performance. Actually, she has her own show so she is really busy.

Monster’s Ball, which I saw, and Halle was really that good.
Glory, Freeman’s, performance was that good.
Training Day, Washingston’s performance, was that good.

I have a problem. Since people like to throw in race here.
Black actors have to make a movie ,be in one ,Oscar worthy that is not about slavery, downtrodden ghetto people, imoralpeople.

Where is Ordianry People,It’s Complicated, etc.

Aren’t our lives not a sterotype? I know mine is not.
    It is typical,dull, ordinary,everyday, average Middle Class,Catholic,
everyday, the norm of typical Americans .
