*sigh*….and yet another black actress who had an AVERAGE-at-best performance gets nominated for an award.

Is anybody else curious on how come blacks ever win a Golden Globe or Oscar, its because they’re either playing a bad guy/gal or their character is super angry. How come we’re NEVER recognized for playing a positive role? And I’ve stopped giving a damn about these awards when Angela Bassett didn’t win s**t for her portrayal of Tina Turner. I knew then it was all politics and not based on talent.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ambitious_balla/ ambitious_balla

jazzwatch, I gotta disagree. I saw her role and again, there was nothing stand-out about it to me. I mean, who CANT look angry? I mean, thats the stigma of us anyway. “Blacks are so “angry!” So all she did was reinforce that and got rewarded for it from the people who CREATED the stereotype….whitey.

I bet you Sandra Bullock wins some s**t for her role in “The Blind Side.” But a black woman winning for some POSITIVE s**t? Good luck…..

Good job and congratulations Mo. May God keep blessing you. To Ambitious_Balla…does it really matter what type of role she played to get the award? At least she got it. Her radio show was great, they took that away. So basically what I’m saying is when God closes one door another one always open.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ambitious_balla/ ambitious_balla

    TASTYCHOCOLATE317, yes it DOES matter!

So you’re saying you’re 100% comfortable with your people ONLY being recognized when they’re angry or corrupt when there’s been so many inspirational, positive performances by blacks that have went ignored? I’m not.

These awards are the Hollywood equivalent of the news. Highlight all the bad, but turn your head when there’s something positive. Its not fair that we have to show our ass to be considered one of the “elite”.

Im sorry, but I’m just not into “pity” awards out of fear that blacks will cry “outrage” if they DON’T get it.

And Monique’s shows suck. She’s a horrible host…everyone isn’t capable of SUCCESSFULLY dabbing into other areas. She’s a comedian…and not a very funny one at that, but her strong points are on the stage. She should say there.

Her tv show wont be on much longer either. Im not hating. I love seeing blacks be successful…when its DESERVED. I’m just saying she doesn’t have what it takes to do something like that.

ambitious_balla….can you stop being such a hater!!!! You are an clear example of not supporting your own. Monique did an AMAZING JOB!!! if you just saw the movie and didn’t read the book then you wouldn’t understand. This movie highlighted an issue that many teenagers face, even now, white or black. In my opinion, the movie didn’t represent an angry black woman but mental, physical and emotional abuse that need to be address in our society…Congrats Monique

I have to agree with ambitious_balla. It was a good movie but how many “poor little black child makes it through” movies do we have to be LIMITED to? Can we be the intelligent bad guy for once and not the evil thug. I mean I’m happy for her but was this “role” really something that was out of our/HER element? Something we haven’t seen? ehh

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/vadiva102/ vadiva102

i think that a lot of men have a problem with this movie because of the subject matter. how many men have self-esteem issues and face incest? don’t get me wrong because boys can be sexually abused, but pregnancy is not a result. this type of abuse can happen to any one despite race or social standing. the problem is that too many of us turn a blind eye to people who are suffering under the yoke of abuse. the award committees always look for that performance that takes an actor out of their element(hence Denzel and Halle’s previous wins). it’s entertainment folks. either you like the performance or you don’t.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Jack_Stephen1/ Jack_Stephen1

we gotta take part of the blame for our people only gettin awards for these roles. ni99atry, debachery and ignorance are celebrated and rewarded in our communities. also, we don’t support other genres enough. they’re plenty of da mn good blk movies that’ve been put out but didn’t our support at the box office.

vadiva102, I am not a man and I have GREAT problem with Monique winning the award for THIS movie. And I ask you, How is a black woman facing hard times taking her out of her element? True she hasnt done anything else to warrant an award..But the first time she gets a ‘nod’ shes that typical character in which EVERYONE sees MOST black women anyway. Not a good look for US as a whole. The WORLD gets its ideals about us through media, period. And I for one am not proud of the world getting its minds eye from a movie like this. They think that there are more ‘precious’ characters in the black community then there are any other type when that is NOT a truth. Denzel could have gotten an award for John Q or Hurricane..but he got it for being the ‘BAD BLACK GUY’, Now I dont think Halle can act at all, But she could have gotten a nod for swordfish or Losing Issah, no, she got it for Monsters Ball…And black people are so BLIND that they cheered and hollered for these accomplishments, but really, was it an accomplishment or ANOTHER STIGMA??

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ambitious_balla/ ambitious_balla

SincereNow, how about you put on a blindfold on and go run across the nearest interstate?

So I’m a “hater” because I don’t promote bulls**t? I’m not “supporting my own” because I’m tired of being recognized ONLY when we’re showing out? Go kill yourself…..

Then your next statement held NO water whatsoever.

“the movie didn’t represent an angry black woman but mental, physical and emotional abuse that need to be address in our society”

In THAT case, Monique shouldn’t have won for her performance in your OWN words. Because the goal was to “highlight an issue.” So if thats the MAIN focus, shouldn’t the WRITER of the movie had won instead of her? I mean, after all, its all about the “issue” right?

vadiva102, nobody ever said the movie sucked. I said her “performance wasn’t all that great, seeing that she was basically being “herself.” I feel that awards should be given when you excel in a performance that’s out-of-character. I mean, it wasn’t hard for Eminem to play his role in 8 Mile because he basically played himself. Monique played herself and it wasn’t Golden Globe worthy.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/shar25s/ shar25s

I have read the comments below and i was shocked now i do agree that its sad that a African American has to play the role of a bad guy or take their clothes of of be a angry black woman to win an award but to me they are stepping out of their character to play these role. Why i say that because Denzel is not a bad guy but he played the hell out of that role shocked me, and Monique’ is the fun loving person you is always cracking jokes and laughing an in this role she was mean real cruel so she did step out and they worked hard for what they achieved so i am proud that she did win that award.. Hopefully in the future they can give black actors and actresses awards for other roles they play but the movie had a point and maybe people might need to read the book also to get it… ambitious_balla i read your profile page and you want people to know that you are you and you speak your mind so remember everyone has their own opinion and it should be respected so how can you tell someone to put on a blindfold an go run across the interstate that’s just childish, but to each his own.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/pretty-cp/ pretty-cp

Congratulations to her! There are many edgy comments said here, which personally I see the prospective of them all. However, Monique won the award, bottom line. Be happy for her accomplishment and yes for being a black woman making that accomplishment. If there are issues with the voting then be upset with the Golden Globes, and speak negatively of them. Not the actors/actress. They were only doing their job. The movie itself was not something that I would watch again, but the performance that Monique gave was what she needed to be in that movie. This was not her being her. Therefore that is why she won. I agree that there are some actors/actress that should have won previously for their performances, especially Angela Bassett (awesome actress, in fact the best)! We have to just continue to support them in the box office and in other ways. Ignore the ignorance and uplift the excellence. To God Be The Glory.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/pretty-cp/ pretty-cp

One thing I have learned when dealing with white people is they are going to be who they are. We must continue on with our lives and live right and not worry about them. Yes, they possibly go be basing awards off of stereotypes and whatnot. However, again they are white people being white people, so personally I am not going to expect them to be anything less than that. Most still have an ignorant mind and once we understand that and quit expecting them to change then we will be able to focus on the betterment of ourselves and reach goals that they would have never thought blacks could. To God Be The Glory.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/toocoldscorpio/ toocoldscorpio

Yes, it’s another movie where someone black is portrayed in a negative light, and they won an award for it. You know what though, she played the part well. Like shar25s said, we always see Mo’Nique as the wise cracking, fun loving woman. To see her step out of her comfort zone, and to do something that is totally opposite of what she usually does, she did a hell of a good job.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ambitious_balla/ ambitious_balla

shar25s, you said “to me they are stepping out of their character to play these role. Why i say that because Denzel is not a bad guy but he played the hell out of that role shocked me, and Monique’ is the fun loving person you is always cracking jokes and laughing”

Do you hang out with these people to know any of this? Cause I’ve read several articles and saw interviews from people who said that Monique is a “b***h” when she’s not in front of the camera. I’ve never heard anything negative about Denzel. But I’ve heard about Monique on at LEAST 3-4 different occasions, all by different people. I seriously doubt that these people are getting together to try to ruin her character.

Basically, what I’m saying is, just because we don’t SEE it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Case in point, Tiger Woods. He was the “token” black guy who whites adored…til his skeletons came out of the closet. Nobody “expected” that because that wasn’t the lifestyle that was reflected in the public eye. Tyra Banks is another. On tv, she’s this positive, uplifting, beautiful, inspirational woman. But the people who are AROUND her daily says otherwise.

So you can’t say she wasn’t “out of character” just because you’ve never, first hand, witnessed her act a fool.

And I DID say that on my profile. However, where’s her reprimand for NOT respecting MY opinion? Why focus solely on me? She called me a “hater” and said I don’t “support my own” because I didn’t agree with what SHE thinks. Yet, I’m not to say anything because I should respect HER opinion, but my own opinion means nothing? I’m not feeling you right now….

And I’m not trying to be rude. Just saying…don’t act like I stepped out of line when SHE inistiated it. I merely responded with yet again, my opinion that she should play in traffic. And I STILL feel that way. Anytime I refuse to cater to stupidity, I’m a “hater.” Cool. I’m “hating” everything then. Her opinion and her life.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Ty28/ Ty28

I’m lost in the middle on this issue. I am truly happy for Monique for winning the award, but have to agree that Hollywood will only acknowledge great black actors if they’re in a role that makes black people look bad. Me and my sister-in-law were taking about how they had a movie (Precious) come out about a horrible black mother and then another movie (The Blind Side)that gave the image that black children can be raised with love, if their adopted by white people. I know these movies don’t speak for every black household, but it’s a shame that this is how Hollywood sees us. I also wonder if we are such horrible people then why do you want our full lips, ample behinds, to date us, dance like us, sing like us, have flava/swaga like us. Sigh.

On another note, Hollywood aside, some black families out there are in a state of crisis and need to address molestation and rape within their families. So let’s focus on this issue first and then work on building each other up positively instead of always hating on each other. Maybe then, we can deal with Hollywood’s views of us.

I don’t normally post on these type of posts but I could resist this time. This forum is for OPINIONS – and we ALL have one. Ambitious_balla – although I respect your OPINION – I don’t agree with it. You’re quite emphatic about Monique playing herself. The question is – do you know her personally or her life? If not, how can you say that she’s playing ‘herself?’ We all see or have seen her in various ‘roles’ or on stage – but is that her a character that she’s portraying? It seems that no matter what – black people find a way to tear each other down & then b***h & moan when no one is nominated or wins at the various award shows. You…we…the blac race…can’t have it both ways. This just MY opinion – not facts. Be blessed!

Yeah, I agree with the subject matter of Precious, which I did and will not see,too depressing and I cannot relate,is another Black flick. Why must all “Black ” movies be like this?
When is there going to be a movie with Blackpeople injustamovieabout regular life or aregular subject? Well,Blacks won’t go see that and Whites either.
These kinds of movies seem like precious is only a problem in Black USA.

Right of the top of my head, movies where the the characters were Black for no reson relevant to the film and had normal lives:
    Philidelphia-Denzel Washington
Devil’s Advocate-Tamara,I forgot her last name.
    Sex And THe City-Jennifer Holiday

    and there are some others.

Just_4U8, No I DONT know her personally. But the people who ARE around her on a regular basis says she’s a b***h and very aggressive. So again, when I hear it from multiple sources, it no longer becomes hearsay.

How am I “tearing the race down” because I want blacks to be successful, NOT only for the ability to show their ass?

Lets talk about blacks who played POSITIVE or less than “typical black” roles and actually REALLY did a good ACTING job:

Samuel L. Jackson in “A Time To Kill, Rules of Engagement, Coach Carter, Resurrecting the Champ”

Denzel in “John Q, Malcolm X, Philadelphia, Remember the Titans, Antwon Fisher, The Great Debaters.”

Lawrence Fishburne in “Boyz N The Hood, Higher Learning, The Tuskegee Airmen, Akeelah and the Bee.”

Angela Bassett in “Malcolm X, What’s Love Got To Do With It, Waiting to Exhale, Akeelah and the Bee.”

Morgan Freeman….”Lean On Me.” Need I say more?

I’m not understanding how you all see awarding these roles is “a win for the black community.”

I bet ya’ll also reward your kids and tell them how smart they are when they bring home D’s on their report card. I mean, after all, so what they ALMOST failed. At LEAST they passed right? Thats basically what your logic suggests.

Some of this blame has to be put on us blacks as well. Most all movies,tv shows, and music that are put out by blacks all are very stereotypical. Black people say they would support something positive, but box office numbers show that is not true. I didnt see Precious, but i heard she did a really good job. For me is just about how good the actor played the part, rather than what that character portrays about black people. Angela Bassett should have definitely won for Tina and Denzel should have a few more than he has, but they are not the first ones to be snubbed for good roles, black or white. Denzel did win for Glory, Jennifer Hudson “Dreamgirls”(which i didnt think she deserved, she isn’t a great actress, she just sung the hell out of that song), Morgan Freeman “Milllion Dollar Baby” and he is probably going to get nominated for Inviticus this year, Sidney Portier”Lilies of the Field”, Lou Gossett also won, Whoopi Goldberg (didnt get it for Color Purple, got it for Ghost, Jaime Foxx “Ray”, Forrest Whitaker “King of Scottland” ). Back around 15-20 years ago, movies with blacks had some substance, nowadays the academy dont have much to choose from, but thats not their fault.
Chris Rock said it best…We will when know when we have reached real equality when a black man has the freedom to suck at something like the white man. When a black person can make a horrible film, and its just so and so made a bad film, and not this black person made a bad film, he is a disgrace to his race.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SCKARAMEL/ SCKARAMEL

Well, “Precious” is not a “black” movie. It just so happened htat a black woman wrote the book. So yes, they hired black actors/actresses to play yhe parts. THe issues in this movie occur in every race. So why are black people claiming all the negative things they see in a movie? People please stop claiming everything. The sad thing is just because you experienced it doesn’t make it a black issue its a people issue. I normally don’t comment on these things but I just couldn’t hold my tongue this time. And congrats Monique!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/BBWBONITA79/ BBWBONITA79

Us as black people are so anal at times, God forbids white people make a joke about us while our jokes at times are all about white people. We are overlly sensitve about every DAMN THING, we as black people have to take the stick out of our a@#. Pull it out black people, and breath damn it.

Now I don’t ride the white gravy train at all I believe racism is here, and it will always be around, till d end!!!! ugh

I am saying this, to say it is not only black people that win awards for negative image roles (Charlize Theron for Monster) or maybe she won because she (Charlize Theron) is from South Africa where black people live. You how we could sound ignorant and suspicious of every damn thing.

Yes Denzel Washington should have won for his role in Glory, but he didn’t.

Black people build a bridge and get over it, please……Worry about real life black people that ain’t got the sense God gave them “Pants on the Ground” and really make us look dumb and ignorant. Give Monique her win, and stop complaining……DAMN

I have no idea why we are making such a big deal about this. She played the role well and won deservingly. That should be the end of that. Will everyone stop trying to make something racial out of this and move on. We have to get to a place where we must accept that there are obvious difference in cultures, backgrounds, and ethnicities. What makes the world interesting is the ability to embrace these differences and live together. Let’s all of us make that our goal for 2010. Thank you!!

I have to show Monique love. She played a hard role and had me convinced and upset at the end of the movie. That in my opinion is a good actress and part of being an American is freedom to have an opinion. I’m happy for her and would love to see her in another movie soon. If she can pull off a very different role from this and convince me, then I will say she is a GREAT actress. Some may not agree, but that is why I have so much respect for Hallee. She’s played everything from a slave to an action hero, a clueless mother and beyond. Same with Denzel, and most of our actors/actresses. These directors are convinced that there is a a shortage of black actors and in turn continue to use the same ones over and over.
