badguys

“…watch a flick, illin and root for the villain..” – Nas, “One Time For Ya Mind”

As likable as the good guys are in movies  (we see you Will Smith) there is something about a badass that keeps us lined up at the box office quoting them long after the credits roll. Just think about who is more memorable: Tupac’s Bishop from Juice or his Lucky character from Poetic Justice? Thought so.

Not only is it more fun to play the bad guy in a movie, it seems to pay more dividends. Monique has won a Golden Globe for her role in Precious as the abusive mother, Mary, and Denzel won his first Best Actor Oscar playing a villain in Training Day.  The last time a Black actor won an award for being nice on screen was Jennifer Hudson winning Best Supporting Actress for  Dream Girls (2006), Jamie Foxx for Ray and Morgan Freeman for Million Dollar Baby in 2004.  While I’m sure many of you reading this can quote the crooked cop Alonzo line for line, I doubt most folks can remember one thing that “Eddie Scrap-Iron Dupris” said in that boxing gym.

So here is our salute to those characters that were so good at being bad.

Two things… Denzel did not win his first Oscar for Training Day, it was his second, he won an Oscar for his role in Glory(do ya research) and Wesley Snipes was good as Nino Brown but I think Denzel was colder and harder as Alonzo, just my opinion…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Everettlm/ Everettlm

You really don’t have a clue about movie history and awards, do you? Hattie McDaniel won a Best Supporting Actress oscar for 1939′s “Gone With The Wind,” for playing the Mammy. Sidney Poitier played a good guy in 1963′s “Lillies of the Field,” to win his Best Actor oscar. Rupert Crosse, Alfre Woodard, Beah Richards, Ruby Dee, Cicely Tyson, Paul Winfield, Michael Clark Duncan, and a number of others have been nominated for “good characters.”

Everett, I said the LAST TIME, as in the most recent. 1963?? Come On, Son!And while many people were NOMINATED I spoke about people who actually WON the Award. Thank you.

Ima have to disagree with ya Mar-Cole. Nino Brown = the coldest bad guy of all time. Nino single-handedly took light-skin dudes out the game! Plus, I love Denzel, but he kinda plays the same guy in every movie.

How do you leave out Dr. Facilier from The Princess and the Frog….Keith David killed that movie!

@ Mar_Cole – Two thingz for u… The article reads BEST ACTOR OSCAR and “Training Day” was Denzel’s first, not SUPPORTING ACTOR which is what he won for his role in Glory… Secondly, lookz like jLBarrow did his/her research

James Earl Jones should be on this list twice. He was the voice of Darth Vader in the Star Wars trilogy, and he also played the villain Thulsa Doom in Conan the Barbarian.

If you are looking for a villian that kills rape and murder you are right I will go with densel in trainning day. Buth te person you will love to hate the most is Berry from the film Prince of Hitsville.

Let’s not forget Carl Weathers as APOLLO CREED, in the Rocky movies. (Remember, he started out as a “big-shot” who wanted to humiliate Rocky but ended up his best friend AND rival throughout the Rocky movies.) Oh, and Mr. T played a boxing bad-ass named CLUBBER who would have put even Mike Tyson to shame!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/archanjo/ archanjo

Riddick and Thulsa Doom would definitely top my list. Then, Jules and Alonzo. Everybody else just wack.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Mar_Cole/ Mar_Cole

@hslml, I guess we gonna have ta agree ta disagree, plus Denzel’s role in Training Day is a lot different than the roles he usually plays which is why he is still talked about in that movie(my mom still doesn’t believe him for that movie, LOL)..@Robb31, U right fam, he did say best actor, didn’t catch til I read again, so my bad on that 1.. And as much as I liked both of their roles I would definitely have ta disagree with coldest bad guy of all time.. That my friend goes ta Joker in Dark Knight, but again, its an opinion…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Mar_Cole/ Mar_Cole

LOL, let me change that statement(Joker being coldest of all time).. Cause I can’t neccessarily say that, Heath Ledger just did such a good job, Joker was believeable(i don’t think anyone will play Joker better)… I don’t mind debating on those just ta get point of views though, I respect ya’ll thoughts, hopefully U respect mine also..

“No strategy. Balboa’s so predicatble & stupid, the man comes straight ahead…”

“Since you’re ol’ man ain’t got no heart, why don’t you come over to my apartment tonight. I’ll show you a real man…”

“Hey boy. After I finish crucifying him, YOU’RE NEXT!”

    “I’M THE CHAMP!”
