First let me commend and apologize to the organizers. Like most consumers of entertainment when I heard the word “urban” in Urban World Film Festival, I immediately thought this event would have all the trappings of a typical African-American cultural experience. With that in mind I did not think that the event would actually start on time. My bad. Colored People Time was not in effect here and being 20 minutes late forced us to wait for the second showing. But that was okay, because it gave me a chance to check out the kind of grown and sexy crowd that you only see in New York. Okay, maybe LA and Atlanta, but you get my point. Anyway my tardiness allowed me the chance to play on the red carpet, grab a bite to eat and absorb all of the eye candy.

Mr. Rock’s documentary was a well-deserved slap in the face. Having heard the term “Good Hair” all my life, and being overly familiar with the economic, cultural and psychological exploitation of people of color in general, and African-Americans in particular, I thought that I already knew all that there was to be said on the subject. For the second time in one evening I was wrong. The collection of narratives from all the personalities presented, a crash course on the economics of black hair care, and a global tour highlighting the values placed on hair, left me dazed and confused. I couldn’t have been more stunned unless you tazed me with a stun gun.

As I sat up into the wee hours of the morning trying to process what I had seen, my mind kept coming back to Dick Gregory and Richard Pryor. I remembered that some ideas are so overwhelming that we can only process them through humor. In other words if you don’t laugh you’re definitely going to cry.

Dick Gregory did it by making fun of segregation and Jim Crow mentality. Richard Pryor did it when he told us we weren’t niggers. With Good Hair I watched Chris rock position himself to be remembered among the greatest comedians of all time.

I cannot wait to go see this film. I think all women of color can relate to this no matter the hair texture. Hopefully now we will not feel so “bound” by our hair type. Gotta go out there and support black film. I anticipate a successful turnout on this one because it has gotten great reviews :).

Im excited about the release of this doc**entary. I saw the trailer a few months ago and it seemed to be funny and informative and witty. Everyone should go support this.

I’m looking forward to this film as well. I wonder if it will cause non-blacks to feel sorry for black women on what we go through for the “relaxed” look. For a lot of us, hair is just an accessory. I just think hair is taken way to seriously..it’s just hair people! Having nappy, straight, curly hair does not make one a more superior person – regardless of what others would have you think.

Not tryin to be racist but I hate seeing White girls get involved. I don’t think Black women want hair like theirs. It’s thin, they stink if they don’t wash it, and it just doesn’t have life. I think most women want their hair to be like it was when they were babies but much, much, longer! Which would equate to Spanish hair or mixed people hair.

Since she asked, yes, Caucasian hair does smell if it doesn’t get washed on time, and that is not very long. It just cant go more than a few days without stinking up. That’s just they way it is.

Anyway I do not advocate sisters wearing weaves just to have a more commercialized European look. Wear your own hair. I think we have the best hair that gets the cutest hairstyles. If you take care of it, it will grow if you want long hair and it will be healthier too. Besides, we need to come up with more different looks and styles because these broads are biting just a bit too hard. We need to switch it up… Do something they CAN’T copy.

I co-sign with TMAC_35000!!! snowbunny9192, you got some nerve to come on to a BLACK (emphasis on BLACK) website and call a black girl a “A NAPPY HEADED B!TCH”!!!! I sit back and watch how some of ya’ll say lil’ slick sh!t out your mouth but you know damn well you wouldn’t come out your face like that if in person so PLEASE don’t try to grow “wings” now. That is not only DISRESPECTFUL but INSULTING. I am black and I don’t even use the word “nappyhead” to reference someone. Had you been in the streets bumpin’ yo gums like that you would have gotten beat DOOOOWWWWWWN!!!!

*For white folks who are so offended by BLACK conversation take your ass to another website…not a racist just a REALIST!!!!*

Lol…wow. The first comment I saw was from Shamel and I agree that if you don’t like a conversation don’t stick around. So after this I won’t.

To all the black girls..and I say “girls” on purpose in this case …making catty remarks about Caucasian hair: it’s stinks. it’s too thin and stringy and you wouldn’t want it anyway etc…HA! EVERYONE’S hair smells if not washed including Asians and Latinos. The fact that you emphasize that it’s WHITE peoples’ hair that stinks shows your general hatred of white people i.e. your racism. White, Asian and Latino people have more oil in our hair. That’s why it isn’t as bone dry and prone to breakage as African hair. There’s a flip side to everything.

Thin and stringy? Depends on the person. There’s no point in bringing up celebs since they’re mostly all fake freak shows anyway but look around you. The girls saying that probably save pics of stringy haired people they find on the internet so they can feel better about themselves. Sour grapes.

    Remember ladies…racism isn’t a color, it’s an idealogy.

Please go out and buy a ticket to see this film, so that black filmmakers can afford to make more films like this one for the black audience. I’m so tired of watching predominantly Caucasian films with black folks either in token roles or not present at all. Thank you.

Well, I think that people may miss the message behind this film because it’s doc**ented by the one and only funny man, Chris Rock. The moral of the story is African-American women spend entirely too much, too much money on hair care products when there naturally sexy, attractive, and beautiful. I love my sista’s. Some of their attitudes, their stand on world views, and priorities I could definitely do without. But, all in all I love my sista’s. I just wish that they would learn to love themselves, trust themselves, not be afraid to be themselves, not be afraid to express themselves, and not be afraid to find themselves in this very complex, imaginary world in which we all live.
