I think that hands down Will Smith is the most successful. But, I don’t really have a favorite. I like Common, LL Cool J, and DMX (when he was good) the most. I also enjoyed watching Nas in Belly.

I think that rappers becoming actors is an insult to the black community, on so many levels.
a. rappers careers are so temporary and the record companies cheat rappers so badly that a rapper has to turn to acting to make any money.
b. the movie companies feel that all they have to do to make their sub par predictable and formulaic movies make any money is to put a rapper in it and “da niggas’ll come a-runnin’!”
c. and to make things worse you niggas do!
d.and lastly, what about the scarcity of decent black roles not going to trained actors. Case in point: Imagine is that movie Belly was actually cast with REAL actors?
but aint nothing gonna change…. cause you niggas is supporting their bad acting.

I think (Anthro)has a point…somewhat.The problem was not as much the message as it was the delivery. What we have to realize is that there are people in power who are purposely controlling how we appear to the world. It is no accident that atrocities like Soul Plane come out. There is a bit of a demand there from the black community but most of the blame does not fall on our shoulders. Now knowing that we have a moral responsibility to our people to shut down these subtle and not-so-subtle attacks against our world image. We DO need more classy roles. I myself HATE raggedy, ghetto,Master P-like movies, but we are not the people behind the plot. This is not to say that we don’t share the blame for some of the self-destruction but our hands are NOT and never have been as dirty as the bastards like Rush Limbaugh who have made a life and career out of picking our bones. Attack him…then maybe someone will listen to you. Brothers and Sisters stop being overly-sensitive when we face criticism from within. Even brothers Martin and Malcolm had strong criticism for black people. I can’t stand a sensitive ass person who can’t stand being criticized.

I can see where Anthro is coming from. However, I do have a question for Antro. What is the difference between downloading an album of a mediocre rapper and going to watch his/her movie? People do it for entertainment. Yes, some people will sell their souls to get into a movie that will perpetuate the stereotypes of our people, but some of those people will go on to do more to portray our people in a different light than has been portrayed in the past. Some will continue to do what they do based on what they want out of life and own personal agenda not what some may feel is better for us as a whole. It’s a double edged sword, if you support them by going to watch the movie, people are pissed because of the perpetuation of the stereotypes, but if you don’t support the movie, then your not supporting your own. So, what do you do? We don’t control the movie studios nor do we have that loud of a voice within them.

What’s funny about this whole thing is that we are all different. We individually do not see things exactly the same way. Collectively, we drastically miss the point all together. “Nigga” has been thrown around so easily that the media, other cultures, and the world over deems it as being cool to use. The rapper-turned-actors are part of the problem? Maybe! But in order for any drastic (drastic is the only change acceptable) change to happen, individually we have to do a lot better. Only then will we be able to see things collectively in the same light. The powers that be couldn’t cash in on anything if there wasn’t already an audience for it. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to see that people on the street, movie goers and whoever are interested in seeing the sc** of the black community. If we did not give them the s**t to sell, then they wouldn’t be able to take advantage of it. Also stop being so damn sensitive. The last brother was right, accept constructive criticism. Most of us grew up under those terms anyway and should not expect anything less.

Will Smith has the acting locked down.LL, Latifah, and Eve can all act. My favorite is Common and Mos Def. Mos Def played disabled guy that cant speak but is able to express hit though as electronic impulses on the hit TV show House. Common looks like he did a nice job in the latest Terminator movie.

I cringe every time I see that pic of 50 cent in Righteous Kill. He has no right to be in the presence, let alone the same film frame as Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino. There are so many other REAL African-American actors that should have had that role. 50 made his money. Let another Brother (a REAL actor) get those parts. You didn’t need the funds, and you shamed the role, and you put that REAL actor out of work.

yall got it twisted… Eve, LL, and Ludacris CANNOT act… they play type roles they couldnt portray anything else but what they have been playing…and in most cases not too well…. acting is a craft… it isnt another way to get over… it seems that people love being swindled… you are willing to accept bad acting because you like or know the rapper… but you dont want to get a GREAT or life changing portrayals from trained actors
