Bill Duke’s documentary, Dark Girls will be premiering this week at the International Black Film Festival in Nashville, Tennessee. The piece explores the challenging issues African-American women face with skin color and how it impacts their self-esteem.

I am fair myself and I have long wavy/curly hair. As a kid, whenever dark-skinned girls would come up to touch my hair or make comments about my skin (usually asking me if I was ‘mixed’), I hated it. They would think that I was stuck up because I didn’t want them to touch my hair or because I wouldn’t comment. Nothing could be further from the truth. I hated that they thought that my skin and hair were better than theirs. My mom always taught us that there was no such thing as “good hair” and that it doesn’t matter what color you are because beauty is on the inside.
I really had wished things were different when I was growing up, that society didn’t treat one group of people better than the other…that these little girls I was around didn’t feel insecure because of their color. Nowadays, things have changed a bit, but I still see a lot of self-hatred and it is sad.

i’m not sure i want to see this doc**entary…it looks pretty depressing from that clip. i hope there’s a brighter side to it (no pun intended) and not just a bunch of dark women wallowing in their sorrow. honestly, i’ve never met a dark-skinned person who hated their skin so much that they voiced their issues like the woman in the clip. the dark-skinned people i’ve encountered seemed pretty damn confident to me, which in turn attracted people to them.
if a woman is pretty and/or confident, she’ll get play regardless of her complexion. only people who FEEL ugly experience the internal suffering displayed in the clip…and not every dark-skinned person feels ugly…not every dark-skinned person has allowed society and the media to brainwash them and hate themselves like this doc**entary makes it seem.

I guess but not everyone you meet is going to jump at the first opportunity to tell you how bad they feel about their skin color, its not a comfortable topic. Your correct when you say a pretty women will get play if shes dark but do you realize how put together and beautiful she has to be as a opposed to a light skinned girl who’s got not much going for her (in the looks department) will have an easier time attracting men ALWAYS.
Although you may feel a not every dark skinned person feel that was (the way these women feel) but i believe the majority does..
