This past weekend in NYC the 13th Annual Urban World Film Festival presented some of the latest gems in Black cinema. 68 short narratives, documentaries and feature-length projects were shown to the public for the first time. Jamie Foxx’s “Law Abiding Citizen” Chris Rock’s “Good Hair” and Lynn Whitfield’s “Mama I Want To Sing” were among the notable clips that will be in theatres soon.
In addition to the films there were several informative panels moderated by the Editor-In-Chief of Uptown magazine, Keija Minor. “Making Better Films … What Are The 20 Things I Need To Know?,” “I’ve Made My Film…Now What?” and “Urban Content For The Global Market” were buoyed by the expertise of filmmakers like Malcolm D Lee and Andrew Herwitz, President of the Film Sales company.
After a day of networking attendees were invited to mix and mingle at several of New York’s hottest night spots including Greenhouse, Taj, Studio 19 and Le Poisson Rouge.
On the final day of the festival an awards brunch was held and the coveted prizes were bestowed upon several deserving filmmakers. The list of winners are as follows:
