Jay-Z’s absence from the “We Are The World” remake did not go unnoticed.  So why did the Jiggaman elect not to participate?

Apparently, because Jay does have some sense of decency after all. (Jokes! Jay’s one of the classiest dudes hip-hop has ever seen!)

MTV News caught up with Jay and asked him for his take on the remake.

I couldn’t agree more!  I bet after hearing the 7 minute piece of sh*t that passes for the remake, he was even happier that he sat it out.

Hasn’t Haiti suffered enough??

With all of that talent in the room, you would think they would’ve found someone to write a brand new song, or at least done the original justice…

Apparently not.

Gotta go with Jay on this one…They should have left that song alone because the ‘talent’ of today cant touch the talent of yesteryear…

I dont hear anything wrong with the new version, and if jay-z, beyonce or rihanna had anything to do with it, he would be singing its praises.

I have to agree with Jay Z, WE ARE THE WORLD is a genius piece of art that should not ever be touched- just like THRILLER. Kudos to those who try with great intentions to remake this particular song, but really how can you top the genius work that has already been done?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/kaikai7/ kaikai7

I agree ! Some things are not meant to be touched! We are the world was a very popular song about humanity and children in particular during the 80′s. So many celebrities took part in it. I am ok with a similar type song being made as a tribute to Haiti I just think that it should be an original! The gospel artist did managed to come up with a beautiful yet original song. It’s too easy to just microwave an old song and throw some celebs on it.If you are going to do it ,do it right!

Hell, the song he did with Rihanna and Bono was better anyway. No need for overkill…. especially considering how the song turned out.

i agree.. everybody from lil white kids 2 a african grandma looooved the song/video.. superstars wuz in it.. it wuz a BIG MISTAKE.. new song. not sayin the people were better.. just a more of a FRESH era.. genuine.. our NEW generation are just as GREAT, in a different way and they have a different story. infact, kanye, should have directed it.. organized it.. the ones in the 80′s are 2 old..

I must agree with Jay on this one. If u were to do a remake on a classic, not only should they have included most of the oringinal folks but some of the othe divas that might have been passed over for the first one; 5 come to mind at present; Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Rachelle Ferrell, Deniece Williams! Of the men, Peabo Bryson! “Seasoned” singers are always in style when it comes benefit projects!$$$

I think Jayz is mad he wasn’t on the record. It was phenominal! I loved the new song. Celine, Mary Mary, J Hud, Mary J. Come on people… It was beautiful. If you want to know whether the record was good ask the children and people of Haiti. it was for them, not for you Jay Z worshippers.I know it hard but stop thinking about yourselves for once. Jay’s big head and ego feels like if its not his idea or creation, then it’s not Good. I would bet B would have been on the record had he not stopped her. Great job to all those Artist on the record from so many different genres. I am so glad they kept Michael on the hook. No one could do it better!

everything he said was redundant he said “it shouldn’t be touched” like 789457894 times in the whole thing forreal thats all i heard..yeah its a classic and they shouldn’t have re-made it but jay-z didn’t back up what he had to say AT ALL ! all he said was “it shouldn’t have been touched” please back up your facts on why it shouldn’thave been touch my dude because sayin “it shouldn’t have been touched” tells me NOTHING other than it shouldn’t have been touched..

it was a ridiculous idea to remake this song.
there were people in this song who had no place in it. whose idea was it to have JUSTIN BIEBER be the first singer on the song, let alone him being in it at all??? the original was like, music LEGENDS. not just people who have a song or two out at the moment.
and personally, i also feel that someone like lil wayne has nooooo place in “we are the world”.
this whole remake was just a train wreck. like seriously, with all the autotune and s**t? ridiculous.

It was a collaboration and they had every right do REMIX it… Nice try… I couldn’t stop laughing at TPain, Wayne and Akon… That was hilarious… BTW My friend says Haitians don’t yodal… He hates Wyclef for yodaling on the song lol

Jigga is 100% Right on this one.

Also. to all the people who’s defends the we are the world Remake Song for Hati are the most dumbest mutha f**kas on the web,and
it goes to show no matter the cause, people is gonna defend anything as long as their favorite artists makes or participates in.That’s being said.

For the people that’s to young to remeber WE ARE THE WORLD was made from the people in USA for Africa Foundation, which used them for the relief of famine and disease in Africa and specifically to 1984–1985 famine in Ethiopia.

In other words the song is an reminder of what happend in Africa, for something future generations to remeber.Like Jay-Z and Common said .The song shouldn’t has been remade because of what the song’s stands for in that time.

They should have made a entirely new song as a future reminider for the People in Hati, For future generations to remeber. But instead the two songs now and forever will became a topic of competition on which is better. The old version or the remake.and they knew that was gonna happen.

Speaking of remakes Ya’ll fail to realize what remake means.
The term “remake” is generally used in reference to a movie or any form of media which uses an earlier movie or media as the main source material, rather than in reference to a second, later movie based on the same source.

In other words Remakes are pretty much do-overs for people who think that the Orginial was a mistake and the remakes are usually the ones to replace the Orginial. But what the old saying goes “If it’s broke don’t fix it”.I let Ya’ll think about how many of your favorite Movie, Songs, and Video Game that was remade but wasn’t necessary because the Orginial was timeless.

Iv’e seen the remake on Youtube, i personally hate it,since when they decided to use Auto Tune in it.
and the Rap verse in the end sound more like a Gansta West Side Story.EWWWW.

Anyway. If Michael Jackson was alive the Remake wouldn’t have been made because Michael knew it was one of his greatest masterpieces and remaking it would taint the message the song was giving for the people in Africa, and MJ would have within his power to stop this song from being remade. If that was the case they could have remade the song for 911,Huricane Katrina or That incident in China(forgot about that huh,??)But they didn’t and as soon as MJ is dead not even a year has passed decided to remade We Are The World.Seemed suspect to me.

I may get some hate by my words on here but my opinion the song is for the right cause but on poor taste By remaking this song for Hati,it’s like giving the middle finger and spitting on the Artists and the Orginal Song that was for the benefit in Africa 25 years ago,and that’s not right because 10 years from now, everybody gonna say it was a big mistake remading that song.

    Think about It.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ChoclateDrop123/ ChoclateDrop123

I think it was a very good idea to remake the song they didnt remake it just to be f**king with it their doing it for a good cause and to kno what the song was originally made for to help the hungry in Africa i think Michael would have loved it and would have been on the remake we all kno how Michael loved to help people and give back so i think he would have been very proud to ounce again take something he loved which is his music to help one another out in a terrible situation like the earthquake

Jay Z is right. The new version of “We Are the World” is whack. I liked the original with Michael Jackson, Dionne Warwick, Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan, Cindy Lauper, Joe C**ker and the rest of the great artists. These new artist that sang the song have very little talent. Music today is not as good as it used to be.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/phazex_female/ phazex_female

    1. Most of the money will never go to Haiti and will be misappropriated

    2. Most of the artists are only looking for a tax write-off (ask Tiger Woods about that, since when did he EVER give a dam about black people?)

    3. EGO got most of the artists to participate. I’d be shocked if ANY of them did the re-make for altruistic reasons.

    That will do it.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/shygirlTJ186/ shygirlTJ186

I agree with Jay. It sounded absolutely horrible, a complete hot mess. At lil_maya1, it’s not that people are trying to bring negativity. I applaud them for TRYING to do something that would help. But the point is for people to BUY the song, and I don’t think many will do that because it sounds so bad. Even if they had written a whole new song, there were just too many people. It seemed like that was the main goal, getting artists. But really, they just threw a bunch of voices together that don’t even mesh well. I think evidence shows that, in general, too many “stars” on a project results in disastrous or mediocre work. ie: the movie Valentine’s Day. These projects get so much hype, and then let you down.

This is all for a great cause. Why fuss about it. I do feel that “we are the world” shouldnt be touched, but its already done so the fact that it was done for haiti, despite whether the artists get paid a bit or not, is a good thing. Who doesnt get paid for these things?? Even wyclef got paid. I do have to say that they should of made a totally different song and no one who is not a SINGER singer should have sang any song.

not a jayZ fan but I understand what he is sayin,… basically ‘we r the world” should be retired, glorified and place on a pedestal not to be touched but look up to… and honored for what it is and was…

the important issue at hand is not the amount of money raised and how it is raised for Haiti,… its how what is raised gets to the man in the street in Haiti. A trillion $$s can be raised for Haiti doesnt mean it will get to them… us mil can build an runway in less than a week!… yet ppl on the ground in Haiti are reportin how all the stuff is not gettin to the people in a timely manner… Did u know that the US was preparing for a natural disaster in Haiti the day before the earthquake?… those r more important issues than whether “we r the world” should be touched or untouched.

It was great seeing these artists come together for a good cause and not taking “d!ck measurements” which is a first in a long time. It’s because of that reason alone that I don’t enjoy the new music. No one was trying to outshine the other,I have mad respect for that. A lot of things I hear about Haiti that is on the News or what I hear from Non-haitians or even Haitians that never lived there are just ridiculous… and Wyclef is not a thief, hes been helping Haiti since I lived there and I see him helping with my own two eyes.. so it is so sad to see people say stuff like that about him.. and the “we are the world” song made a lot of us Haitians cry …its the thought that counts not how it sounds etc so touchable or untouchable it doesnt really matter… SO many people went out their way to do that song and that’s really the point of it all. I really appreciate it..THAT IS ALL..!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mike_diesel27/ mike_diesel27

Ok I’m with Jay on this one. It is an untouchable song. But why is everyone bashing the new artists on here? This wasn’t their idea, it was Quincy Jones’ idea to do this abomination lol. Like Jay said, it was great effort from the ALL the artist involved (yeah even T-Pain lol) but this is a classic song that is perfect as is. Someone said Jay has sampled songs that were classics and that song would be “Me & My Girlfriend” by the late, great Tupac Shakur. I hated that he did that.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/LovelyLaina/ LovelyLaina

I can understand where he is coming from..but you have to look at the times we are living in today. I think it reflects diversity and unity, just as the original song did. Sometimes every lil bit counts so maybe the song is a reminder if unity and encourages someone to get involved and help people out, not just in Haiti, but everywhere and everyday. Then when you are dealing with someone’s opinion you have to be careful. Where was him and his wife? Maybe they werent asked or even considered and maybe this is a response to those actions. You just have to wonder.

I would have liked the remake if it wasn’t for the auto-tune section. WTH did we really need T-pain and lil wayne’s auto-tune? The arrangement was extremely sloppy! It was garbage! They have taken a beautiful song and turned it into complete GARBAGE! Wasn’t crazy about Wyclef’s part either, he threw the whole song off. If it wasn’t going to be better, they should have left well enough alone! I don’t see it turning into the meaningful classic like the original in the future. This song was a complete disaster that can be easily forgotten. I know it was for a good cause but DAMN!

TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH, REGARDLESS OF WHAT WHOEVER SAYS, DON’T REALLY GIVE A S**T ABOUT THE SONG BEING TOUCHED OR UNTOUCHED…AT THE TIME THE SONG CAME OUT IT WAS FOR “A CAUSE” AFRICA…AND 25 YEARS A MAJOR DISASTER STRIKES A COUNTRY…AND ALL WE WANT TO TALK ABOUT IS THAT THE SONG SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN TOUCHED OR NOT…GIVE IT A REST…IT WAS FOR A CAUSE, SONGS ARE BEING TOUCHED EVERYDAY

it’s not about changing the song, it’s strictly about the nature of the song and what it stands for. The switched it up a little but it served it’s purpose. Damn, who cares if it was worse or better than the first one. Artist sample music all the time which is a remake of some sort… people hate regardless of what’s going on in the world…so sad.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/lovelyldylv6/ lovelyldylv6

I have to agree with Jay-z on this one. In honor of Michael Jackson and Ray Charles [RIP] memory this song should have not been a remake. We Are The World the original classic was made to raise money for hungry children of Africa. The original is incomparable, I understand wanting to help but don’t re-record no one else classic piece of work these artist of today are suppose to have so much talent show it come up with your own piece of work.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/zE_TecH/ zE_TecH

i think the most important part of art is the feeling it conveys. i listen to the original and this amazing feeling takes over my body and i’m inspired to go out and save the world (wasn’t that the whole point of the song?). fast forward 25 years.. and the song has lost that essence.

WATW 25 couldn’t hold its own weight without knowing what the original is like. i mean every single artist in the original sung beautifully it was an amazing composition. I listen to the new version and with the exception of a few artist i’m bored. to the people who believe that remakes of classics are ok could you imagine an Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, Chronic or any classic album remake? it just wouldn’t make sense! other people on here have said it.. if it’s not broke don’t fix it especially if you can’t make it better.

I rarely agree with Jay.. but this time he was right.

So ask yourself one question: does this song inspire you? i know for me it didn’t, and to me that was the nature of WATW.

I think J’Z a hypocrite because he remade Tupac song “Me And My Girlfriend”. What would make J’Z say know one can remake Michael Jackson’s song and J’Z using other peoples music. Besides I think Tupac was a good man and he stood for alot of people, couldn’t really say what Michael Jackson did for others besides the dancing and the music and if the charity really made it to the ghetto, but I never was a fan of a grown man running around in womens lingerie grabbing they’re crouch on stage,I don’t know why people found this behavior to be exceptable to the whole world and they’re kids.

In my opinion-some people are missing the point of the song and the point that-it was to raise money fast-so I understand they reason why they did what they did and went, with the original song. It didn’t matter how I felt when hearing it as long as the cause was met and from my understanding it was-so thats all that matters. Who is jay-z to throw stones at someone else for help’ing-he need to get over his damnself and stop trying to remake someone elses sh*t and then taking claim on it. His music suck anyway and its wack…it seem to me-jay mad because the hold thing was not centered around him. Anyone who took part in this remake of We Are The World need to take turns telling that-n!gga to kiss their a$$ and stop hating with his b!tch a$$. Thats a real B!TCH move on jay-z part to down the work of someone who help’d out in a time of need. Word to jay-z NO remake of an ORIGINAL song is better than the original song itself so you know your sh*t suck and is wack as hell because thats-all you did was remake other people sh*t,like I Wanna Rock Right Now,even some of Michael Jackson song’s,2pac and Biggie-so really who are you to talk about anything or anybody?(JMO)

First, I’m not a big Jay-Z fan.. Just to get that out of the way. I agree with him and the writer of this article. ALL that damn talent and they couldn’t come together to write a song more Haiti specific given the fact they did it for them? The song is real crap and it does MJ NO JUSTICE at all. Furthermore, why bash Jay-Z for sitting it out when the dude donated quite a bit of money to help Haiti? Like, him not rapping on a VOCAL song is the end of the world? How in the world can you compare remaking We Are the World to him remaking Me and My Girlfriend?.. lmao.. Seems like “SOME” of you just wanna dump on the dude for no good reason. How many times did you send the text “Haiti” to donate some dollars? What about not donating money and donating clothes instead? How about buying a case of water and sending it down? LOL.. and ya’ll call him a hypocrite? HILARIOUS!

Lovely.. you hit it right on the head

He’s hating. Its a song for charity. and It was a remake. Jay remakes and takes others lines anyway. Probably upset that him and B werent on it. Its not the greatest remake but Its not as bad as he claims either.

@melman03 (and everyone else who b***hed about this)…

First off…I dont think people treat Jay like he’s God…do they put him on a pedalstool musically?…I think so…

Maybe it has to do with the fact that he now at 13 number one albums in a row..second only to the freakin Beatles…just a guess.

As far as “We Are The World”. You guys act like his opinion STOPPED the damn song from doin what is was suppost to do. The song was made and promoted reguardless of what Jay said..or anyone one else for that fact.

Bottom line is….MTV asked his opinion..and he gave it…period.

You dont have to like it.

    Lets act like adults.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/roseworldoaks/ roseworldoaks

There have been a lot and a dozen of re-mixes, so why is Jay-Z just gonna pull down an already washed clothe onto the ground, when the drying line is in urgent need to dry up the wet clothe before the sun goes down..! I think a small part of this world is a part of the whole world, as in synecdoche. The theme song was a usual concept to raise an emergency funds for our world of the Haitian family. It is right on selecting: Theme song ‘we are the world’ for the concert, even if it was going to be a re-mixed or whatever ones it’s going to serve it’s meaningful purpose, there was nothing wrong about that, unless there was some related controversial issues as against the use of the ‘We are the world’ as a theme song, to be performed by artistes who could sing it in their own creative ways..! Jay-Z was wrong, shutting down on that emergency process, despite the fact that he made a wonderful contribution with a sum of money…!

    @DC_Area_Lothario

I’m with you 100% flat out. I was expecting them to write a song about Haiti but no they go used “We Are The World” instead. That is laziness in my book no artist creativity whatsoever. If MJ was alive he would have ask around and then decide to write a new song specifically for Haiti. Beside that all the money raised for Haiti go there not the whole world. Plus the majority of the artists did not even represents the whole world go figure. I remembered the original line up so the new line up does not even stand up to the song. There was reports going on that other artists had commitments so could not do the song. BS in my book they were avoiding it because they did not wanted to do it like Jay Z. Kudos to them and it is easy to do a song without even appearing in the studio with other artists. Been in the business years ago to know that.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/trisha_369/ trisha_369

My point is this-the WRTW remake was for a good cause and for jay z to come out and speak bad on it was a real(B!TCH) move. The song may not have been the best song ever nor just like the original song but in such short time-they done a good job…and their gold was met. For jay to go all out and speak in such a poor-way about the song was wrong and to me he was hating. Why knock a good cause-if your not feeling it just keep that-to yourself. It like im a fan of the ole school music and to hear jay z on the I wanna Rock and other songs to me those are classic songs and he fu(ked that song up,with the rest of them…so for jay to bring that up was a b*tch move to me-when he is doing the same thing and its to put more money in his pocket…NOT for a good cause-like those people was doing.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/2tone/ 2tone

Jay Z is entitled to his opinion just like the rest of you. You don’t like it then don’t read it, don’t comment on it.

Saying someone made a “bish move” for speaking his mind and not just bowing down to the whole “oh it was for a good cause” bullshid is just another sad reminder that we’re living in the “You’re just a hater” era.

    “If I don’t like it, I don’t like it, it don’t mean that I’m hating…” -Common

I’m betting Jay Z donated more money to Haiti than anybody commenting.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/trisha_369/ trisha_369

jay z might have gave alot of money damnsure gave more than me but you didn’t see nor hear me throw it up and he threw that-in when he maded that wack a$$ statement and thats-what you call a b*tch move and damnsure a hater. To give an opinion is one thing but,to speak bad on it is another(AND HE DOING THE SAME THING). Sure he gave money and he MADED that-clear as well. jay is like a n*gga who do something for you and then talk sh*t about you and a n*gga who maded it to the top and forgot where he came from…like he is above everything else. The song was to help and it did-so once again FU*K NIGGA aka jay-z.(JUST MY OPINION AGAIN)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Hellokitty111/ Hellokitty111

Personally in my opinion i didn’t like the remake. It’s not as good as the first one but thats my opinion. I heard it for the 1st time yesterday and it was like ok whatever it’s alright. I know its for charity but i think they could of done a better job. If he didn’t want to participate then thats on him. I’m not gonna down the dude for not.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CocoaCute/ CocoaCute

I was initially excited to hear the remake of “We Are the World.” I saw the world premier on NBC and I was very disappointed. It seemed rushed, thrown together, and wayyy too commercial. I get that it’s a new age, and there’s new artists out so they tried to make it modern and fresh… but the auto tuner, and the rapping, and Wyclef’s terrible whining and wailing just ruined it for me.

I have to agree with Jay in that it shouldn’t have been touched. The intentions were good, but the delivery was not. A new song, with many of the featured on the original, and some new artist would have been better recieved, in my opinion. Bottom line If you’re gonna remake a classic such as We are the World, it had better be as good if not better than the original. Of course, I think everyone knew it just couldn’t live up to those standards.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Chinadoll410/ Chinadoll410

i agree the remake is horrible…i couldnt believe they messed that classic song up like that …lil wayne singing on the track….dudes rapping.. country…. rock and roll…r&b an soul???? they trashed the damn thing!….if it aint broke don’t fix it! Jay…i thought the same thing when i saw it….i was in shock they chopped an screwed that song to the fullest

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Mrgoodbar_3000/ Mrgoodbar_3000

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST/ CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST

@Mrgoodbar_3ooo I agree with you and to ad the song was put together in a short period of time and some of the people didn’t sound great nor did the song sound just like the original but,it got the job done and thats all that matter to the people who lost so much. What jay z should have looked at it-as a good cause not a moment in the spotlight downing someone else-for trying to help out. The same way I feel that-they fu(ked up the remake of I Wanna Rock. So what jay is really saying its ok for him to take classic music and fu(k it up to put money in his pocket but, noone else can. Thats a b!tch move to me…on top of that-did you get the part where he threw in he did his part in help’ing out? Another b!tch move.(JMO)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/lil_al26/ lil_al26

the one good thing on that song…was Jennifer Hudson..and i think pink did well in the song.they sounded like they could of went well with the old song..but the auto-tune..lil wayne..and everyone else..has to go..the song was rushed..and had 100 things going on at one time.

To all of ya’ll who said this song is for a good cause is missing the whole point and the big picture.

Remakeing We are the World is like changing one of the 10 commanments or changing one of the rules on the declariation of indepence.

The first We are the World had a message for another suffering moment in history and it’s story is told thru that song.

But more importantly the people who appered in the song a small majority of them passed away which made the song more valuible and not to be touched because it will tarnish that persons work.

Also it’s true that Jigga has remade his share of songs but even he knows there are songs you cant touch.

Next ya’ll idiots gonna support Chris Brown Remaking Thiller(with Autotune and have Lil Wayne put a Rap verse in it.

We need to put a stop to this S-H-I-T otherwise the Current Music industry destroy legendary untouchable song for Profit.

    Oh and one more thing.
    With these tributes.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/trisha_369/ trisha_369

@sexytyrant-Im one of those people so-im responding to your comment. Your not get’ing the big picture-THE MOST IMPORTANT THING was to raise money fast in a short period of time and thats what the song done-NO it wasn’t the best remake of a song but,it worked out for the CAUSE and thats what should matter the most NOT his personal feelings on the song. And for Jay to come out and speak-bad on this remake was a b!tch move on his part-knowing he fu(ked up alot of remakes on songs he stole. So for him to call everyone out who put their-life on hold and put their heart in the right place wack or anything else-is like a female-who got weave in her hair and calling someone else out because they sh*t is real. Thats like him saying the sun don’t shine when it rain and we all know it do. Point still remain no song is going to be better than the original but-its whats the out come of the song that matters and the out come of this song was great to the people who losted just about everything and they enjoyed the song so what Jay Z feel personally don’t really matter-Jay Z was acting like a lil rich b!tch with a broken nail-you could tell that by his wack a$$ interview. I still think it was a b!tch move…and if Chris Brown and Wayne maded a remake of thriller im sure somebody will love it. And it damnsure will bring alot of haters as well.(JUST MY RESPOND BACK)I agree with you sdslomo.

Jay I take your side on this one. Instead of messing up an original moment, a timeless piece a one in a million hit. Did anyone think that it could have made a bigger difference if we all purchased a copy of the original by having it dedicated to Haiti (new cover but same song) so that people of all countries could have it in their language. More like a dedication to Haiti and because so many of the original singers are no longer with us…WOW! How powerful of a gift could it be?
