Black Thought Criticizes Will Smith!

By The Urban Daily May 7, 2009 2:11 pm

VIA DX:

Black Thought of The Roots spoke recently about fellow Philadelphia rappers not reaching out to one another.

In an interview with HipHopGame.com, Thought pointed to Will Smith as an example of an emcee who could have done more to help other rappers from his city.

I wish artists like Will Smith and some of the other artists who were popular representing Philly in the ’80s and ’90s had [reached out] because what it does is it’s good for morale,” he said. “It’s just a good look for the city and I mean, it just opens doors for the next generation of artists coming from your hometown…It breaks down a lot of barriers or apprehension that people might have about reaching out to a different sort of artist.”

Black Thought expressed some tempered optimism about current Philly rappers possibly assisting their rhyming brethren. “Maybe the Beanie Sigel’s and Peedi Crakk’s will reach out to the Santogold’s and the DJ Diplo’s but that just feels like it would be unwelcome. So we send out a positive signal with a positive vibe by breaking genre barriers.”

Currently, The Roots are keeping busy as the house band for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, as well as recording their ninth studio album, How I Got Over [click here to read].

WOW Yall are REALLY off your rockers. First DO NOT jump out there and criticize a band that has done more as ambassadors for hip hop over the past ten years than most will in a lifetime. Secondly I’m sure the comment is being taken out of context by you hyper emcees and wannabees. Is a person not allowed to state an opinion or make an observation without the world jummping down their throat.
What have any of yall done for your home town or culture lately? Hip hop is a movement. A people that spans the globe not just your local radio station. GROW UP!!! Most of yall stop listening after 25 anyway!

do the best job to “rep” yourself…then theres no need to worry about having someone else do it…sometimes our own struggles are hard enough and we don’t have what it takes to pull each and every person you know thru as well…stand up and do you…let will do himself…

First off Cool Bentley u a nut and like him most of yall miss the f**king point. He’ talking about Unity and black men working together. Will Smith was number one the rap billboard charts more than once back in the days and he’s currently a millionaire with alot of power in Hollywood. They could of got the Philly rap scene poppin back in the days. Ok fast forward they didn’t need that nigga because Siegel, The Roots, Cassidy, Freeway,a bunch of R&B acts and two many other rappers to name from Philly are killing the game. In conclusion thought practices what he preaches by always working with underground and up and coming acts from Philly. Yall smart dum niggazs took the title of the this article and ran with it. Pump ya f**king brakes and I’m not a philly dude I rep B-More.

boooooooo stupid artilce…with a stupid misleading title

  • 5-8-2009 12:04 am

I love Black Thought BUT Will Smith is very generous with giving back to causes in our community, I dont think rap is Will’s thing at all anymore, maybe he could have done more about 10 yrs ago when he was still into music….but not now.

  • 5-7-2009 11:06 pm

woulda, coulda, shoulda, oh well it’s 2009

  • 5-7-2009 10:23 pm

lol…the reason why he ’singled out’(sic) will smith is because no one else can name many other (successful) rappers from philadelphia besides will smith..lol.

  • 5-7-2009 7:20 pm

i mean yeah i agree with dude..but singlin out will smith is wrong….only because like one other person said before…will smith really was and is not into mc’ing…he might be putting on mc acts or anything…but him and his wife goes back to thier communities and give back..they assist ppl (blacks) who are in theatre and such..every year he takes a select few students 2 africa…so he may not be putting on mc acts..but he is doing something positive for the black community in philly..

  • 5-7-2009 7:06 pm

I feel BT on this. It happens everywhere and on every level with black people; those on top at times don’t reach down and support independents in their native city.

  • 5-7-2009 6:34 pm

I don’t see anything wrong or offensive about what BT said. It isn’t like that’s unique to any particular city. probably folk in ATL,MIA, Houston,STL who feel the same way about the first major acts to break from those cities as well.

  • 5-7-2009 5:24 pm

    Will still raps?

  • 5-7-2009 4:59 pm

WELL..THE BOA BLACK THOUGHT IS A 100% CORRECT…BUT THAT COMES FROM THAT DUMB ASS S**T FROM BACK IN THE DAY…THAT SAME BULLS**T HOW WILL SMITH IS TODAY….HE LEFT HIS WHOLE SQUAD IN THE DUST AFTER HIM AND JEFF LINKED UP….THE NETWORK CREW WAS THE S**T….TO FAR BACK FOR MOST…BUT IT IS WHAT IT IS…AT LEAST THE BOA CHARLIE MACK IS STILL IN THE HOOD DOING THINGS……

  • 5-7-2009 4:25 pm

Although i respect Black Thought as an artist, he really needs to back off of Will Smith. I mean, The Roots have been known to play a few fellow Philly MC’s as well. And Will really wasnt into MC’ing alot while he has been acting, but Jazzy Jeff has put on numerous hip hop acts. Chill Thought, you just trippin!
