I know people always say Puffy cheats his artists but it ain’t his fault that they can’t read. I’m sure he didn’t hold a gun to their heads and tell them to sign the contracts. I wouldn’t sign with him without a lawyer looking at the contract, no matter what my financial situation was. Plus, I thought Mase said rap was of the “devil” when he “retired” anyway…what’s wrong? Is the church money slowing up or something, Pastor Bethea?

@Gods_chosenman not so sure Mary J Blige was his first talent. I believe he got her and Jodeci when he was working for Andre Harrell which was I think Uptown Records.

The Lox really didn’t do much period. They had a few songs, but never blew up. Jada had a better career no doubt, but Styles P had what that “I get high” song and that was it. I’m talking from a chart topping standpoint. Everybody know The Lox had great lyrics.

Punk Diddy definitely put out the talent. There is no questioning that, but he is just too deceitful. If you ask a person wants to get ahead and Bad Boy is trying to get with them. They should make sure they just do a 1 album deal without any attachments after it.

Not only P.Diddy the whole mainstream Music industry feeds off dumb artist (or u can say desperate) who wanna get famous quickly chasing their “dream”. If you build up ur fanbase from scratch and u can provide Quality Music plus put alot of work into (which means actually performing) u can make decent money without getting ripped off by major labels. Majors just look for the right suckers they can exploit.And if all u can offer them is great talent u still get screwed because u have a worse bargaining position anyway . Thats just how Bankers done it. Big gains for them on behalf of those who wanna participate in the game without the proper knowledge by selling them dreams /fictional gains.No sense for sustainability on the part of most artists.

Ok Me being in the industry I can tell you that, Mase is STILL with BAD BOY. What Puff signed was a release or a permission slip if you will giving his permission for Mase to be on other peoples records. And ANY guest spot that Mase does I bet you Puff will get a percentage point of Mase’s cut from the Back end. You can’t be mad at Puff cause these artist don’t read the fine print WITH A LAWYER PRESENT! “If it’s TOO GOOD to be true then it usually is. Also you have ALOT and I mean ALOT of artist who want to come in and be Superstars right away and not want to put in the work. There is a WHOLE LOT that goes into just one song let alone a WHOLE CD before it is heard on the radio. I never sign ANYONE without 1st seeing what the market is for what they do and what they sound like. Because the music listening public is VERY FICKLE just cause it’s hot this week doesn’t mean it will be after while.2nd ANY artist I sign MUST HAVE A LEGAL REP! ANY and EVERYTHING that is agreed to MUST BE ON PAPER. 3rd Only sign a deal that will only hold you for 1 to 3 albums and get your percentage points OFF future sales and at the end stipulate in your contract that you want OWNERSHIP of your Masters.4th Any songs you write or beats you produce copywrite it as your catalog so even if you can’t get your masters you will still have a percentage point if your Ex label should use any portion of your songs or beats. So to all you up and coming artist here on the Planet get you a Lawyer before you get in the game, Puff about that paper and you can’t say he plays on the weak, those who are SERIOUS about this music business will pick up a book and learn about it BEFORE they sign their life away.

@raja…technically Mary was one of the first acts he ever signed besides BIG she was arguably the most successful…Dont forget about the lox. But even they dident get to keep their name…thats why they switched to D-Block. Lil Kim did well after BadBoy. 112 put out two decent albums after Badboy…but no where near as successful as the BadBoy records. Slim has been succesful (but hes prob the only one). Faith cant leave the grimey dudes alone, thats why belief why her career tanked. So in a way being on Bad Boy was like a Gift and a curse…like you were instantly famous yet at the same time, no one was telling these artists how to control their money…Puff even said that. The Artists would spend their advance checks on Jewels, krystal and women. And if you think about it like that…that advance is what they give you for your record.
