BDKRakim

In a recent interview with BET.com Rakim was asked about the battle that never was with fellow hip-hop legend Big Daddy Kane.

“That would have been a hell of a battle, man,” he said. ”We was talking bout that today as well. I think the difference between me and Kane, Kane was more of a punchline rapper…and some of my rhymes you had to wait ’til you play it 10 times, rewind it and figure out what I was doing. I don’t know, man. Honestly, you would have had different opinions of who you thought won.”

I personally think that in a face-to-face battle Kane would come out on top because, as Rakim said, he is a witty MC that would get the crowd on his side. However, if there were recorded songs a-la “Ether” vs “The Takeover” I’d give the edge to Rakim. Either way Ra is confident that he would prevail.

“But as far as I’m concerned, I would have put a new hole in my dude’s…nah mean?” he added jokingly. ”I love you, my dude.”

C’mon Ra… Kane was just as hot as you. He was more party back then & you are more spiritual on a street level.

Kane is/was not a bum emcee… We know your lyrical bumrush is like 777 hobo’s deep, but Kane is Arm, Leg, Leg, Arm, Head too!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Da_J_Rok/ Da_J_Rok

I gotta go with Ra… but back then based off popularity Kane probably would have won

i respect the hiphop elders battling the same way i can respect boxers or martial artists who battle….

they fight, and afterwards shake hands, hug or whatever…. then they kool again cuz they have respect for each other and know its about the ARTFORM and not about ego.

Toss up. Ra has always been help up as one of the original ‘conscious’ rappers, but Kane had that too. Both had incredible styles and flows all their own. I’d flip a coin on who would win in a battle.

Both were very incredible MC’s. I loved both, but my personal preference, Rakim!

I still remember how huge of an impact “check out my melody” had on NYC. The song was revolutionary. NO ONE was rhyming like that prior to that release. Rakim changed the game and ushered conscious lyrics into the rap industry.

It is quite simple, but difficult to answer this. Look at the Nas vs Jayz scenario. If you think Nas won, you’d go with Rakim. If you thought Jayz won, you’d go with Kane. It really does align like that because NAS’ dis was talking about Jayz in a breakdown of character scenario and that hit hard each line, that’s why people said he bodied JayZ with Ether. JayZ’ disses were more of trying to do his regular rap style, so it was almost like just another song by JayZ, yet some people thought he won. People who are in love with Jayz will say he won, although his dis records were WACK! Jayz is also a punchline guy, meanwhile the depth Nas could take you to, in that dis, scars the character. It’s almost like more than a dis. I think Rakim’s would have been on that level, like NAS, and thus Rakim wins. But because of the hype of BDK, most would think BDK would take it.

I dig BDK, always have but………..can ya’ll remember the first time you heard “Follow the Leader”? C’mon man!! Rakim is the colderst EVERRRRRRRR!!! The brother took rap into a different stratosphere when he and Erik B. landed that album! I only wish he would switch up his production because he’s still got the pipes to make hits.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/stylemaker2020/ stylemaker2020

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH NAS OR JAY-Z YOUNG MAN. LOL

IT WAS JUST COME FLAVORFUL PLAYFUL COMMENTARY ON WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BACK WHEN. AN AGE OR TIME BEFORE ALL THE IGNORANCE AND IT’S BLISS.

    LONG LIVE RAHKIM!

    LONG LIVE BIG DADDY KANE!

to,Rakim is the best ever.so he gets my vote hands down

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MarkAllen/ MarkAllen

not to take anything away from BDK, cuz he was nice bacc in the day, but he woulda ended up one of those ’21 emcees’ if they were to ever battle!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SunofAusar/ SunofAusar

Hmmmmmm, always have been a Kane fan, still am. I vote King Asiatic NOBODY’s Equal!!! Rakim has skills that would knock off almost any MC out there, but I can’t see him matchin with Kane in a battle. Maybe in a record battle, but live…not happening.

Many people just remember Kane for being a hype/party MC, but remember, “Burn, Hollywood, Burn” with PE, “Young, Gifted and Black”, “Rap Summary (Lean on Me)”, “Dance with the Devil”, etc. Kane was hittin from all aspects,

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Benzly/ Benzly

    KANEEEEEEEE … ALLL THE WAY

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ruelrokwel/ ruelrokwel

I say we already had that battle twice already (of sorts). Once when both MCs went head to head on the hip hop historical “JUICE” soundtrack with “nuff respect due” and “know the ledge” and in a more indirectly but still vicariously related battle between the smooth operator Big Daddy Jay and Godson Nas Allah. lol. That plus the numerous freestyle songs (by definition Big Daddy just gave) that each MC has contributed to its genre. Nevertheless that is one truly interesting and controversial topic that even if it had insued a unanimous decision would be near impossible.

BDK not only came after Ra hit the scene, but his style benefited from the influence of Rakim on the culture as a whole. Still though, that’s a tough one to call. I’ll just enjoy “Long Live The Kane” & “Paid In Full” this afternoon to reminisce!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Dhalil/ Dhalil

that is a hard question. I have always been a fan to both MC’s!! Both of these guys are lyrical masters. Kane with delivery sharp lyrics and much bravado. Rakim raw uncut, with a deep respect getting tone. One thing I can say about Rakim he is still one of the best and his music is not laced with vulgar words or stories of him doing violence. I would love to see that battle today! These dudes are from the era when the artist did not sound the same and did not seem to spit lyrics that seem to come from a template for being a gangsta. both are real versatile!

After battling head 2 head for 2 & half hours with Big Daddy Kane in front of my high school back in 88, everybody listening & looking out the windows said that Wells got the edge & defended the school, Kane requested a re-match that Wells agreed to but it never took place (I wonder why, Lol). I didn’t know at the time that O.D.B. use to go to the same school one grade above me til he dropped out & Jay Z use to come around as well before he became the Jay Z you know him as today (but that would have been an annihilation cause Jay was still in training at the time from what I understand, Lol). The best at that time was Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, KRS-1, Slick Rick, Kool G Rap, L.L. Cool J & a few others that you would probably not know about but the only two that I was mostly concerned about going head to head with after slaying Big Daddy was Rakim & G-Rap eventhough I probably would’ve murdered them too, Lol…

Alot of yall don’t know what the hell yall talking about! Rakims one of the greatest and he aint no joke and all that but Kane’s too aggressive for him. Google or Youtube Ra and Kanes freestyles from back in the day to understand what i’m saying… Non the less, that would’ve been a better battle then Jay and Nas!!!
