Surprise, surprise: Another rapper is pissed off at his record label! This time, it’s Lupe Fiasco. Though commentary from his former friend/producer Prolyfic and his Twitter beef with Eskay of Nahright are making Lupe look like more of a crybaby than rebel, we’re giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Lupe took to Twitter a couple weeks ago to announce that he’s handed his latest album, Lasers, over to Atlantic Records:

“Lasers is out of my hands guys and gals…it’s done and that’s all I can tell you…when they drop it…they drop it…so drop it…”

The announcement was enough to get a group of Lupe’s fans to start a petition last week asking for Atlantic to release the record. But haven’t we seen this dog and pony act before? Rappers have been battling their record labels for years now. To show you what we mean, we sat down and came up with a list of 10 rappers not named Lupe Fiasco who have gone through similar struggles. Feel their pain.

The Rapper: Clipse
The Label: Jive Records
The Politics: Pusha T and Malice of the Clipse actually started recording their sophomore album, Hell Hath No Fury, in late 2003. But thanks to a merger between their original label Arista Records and Jive Records, a slew of album delays, and a lawsuit which included the duo suing Jive for the right to leave the label, the album didn’t come out until November 2006. Like a fine wine, the project only got better with age (it eventually earned a “XXL” rating from XXL) but the long delay resulted in subpar album sales and Clipse left the label in early 2007.

What’s the big deal? It’s not only rappers that get screwed by record companies. ALL artists get screwed by record companies because that’s what they do, take the MAXIMUM that they can get from their artists http://bit.ly/aJocm2

    LMAO. This is old news.

Musicians have been getting screwed Motown and even before that.

Take it from someone who has seen artists come and go realizing that the business side of music wasn’t their calling.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jazzwatch/ jazzwatch

Motown did it, Puffdragon did it, hell. Black musicians been getting screwed since Satchmo days in the 1920s, so what else is new??????

courtneyR, I’m going to syndicate my cartoon series I’d done since 1976, and I will copywright it and maybe syndicate it myself so I won’t get screwed……
the saddest part is NONE of those relatives( of Satchmo. Morton, Ellington, Tatum Fitzgerald) get NOTHING, but the music I LOVE I got them on 78s (worth several yuppy bucks), screw the CDs..they suck, has piss poor/artificial quality to my old 78s, and instead of blowing $20 nucks on them I rather blow it on gas or some mooshy drawes…..

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SAMURAI7ASSASIN/ SAMURAI7ASSASIN

I can’t believe they didn’t put Ras Kass and Canibus on there.

But the reality is, if you are not one of the bubble-gum popping coon type rappers, then you will definitely get screwed in the industry these days.

Independent is the only way to go.

How about people like Fat Joe, Canibus, Craig G, Rakim, Eve, Fifty Cent, Curren$y (or pretty much almost ANYBODY who’s EVER been on Cash Money, like Juvenile, B.G., Young Buck, etc.), Twista, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Busta Rhymes, Consequence, AZ, Cassidy, LL Cool J, Freeway (or pretty much anybody who’s been on the Roc other than Kanye West, like Cam’Ron, Jim Jones, Beans, etc.), TI (back in the beginning of his career), the list goes on and on and on and on and on! lol

THEY DONT WANNA END UP WITH DIDDY OR SUM1 GETTING F**KED IN DA ASS JUST TO BE FAMOUS.(like most of diddy’s male artist) LOL

This is what happens when folks see $$$$$$ before they worry about reading the fine print of their contracts. These record companies can do any and everything they want to you if you let them. You can take them to court all you want to get out of a contract but 98% of the time you will LOSE! and will end up BROKER than you were before.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Cake171/ Cake171

    I love Lupe’s style. I think he’s sooooo underrated.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mastergkg10level/ mastergkg10level

What I like about Lupe is his swag. he’s like this new classic even thought he not interested in having girls in his video like most male rappers he’s one the best.

This is why I firmly believe there needs to be an IMTV broadcasting network (Independent Music Televison). In 2010, there are so many outlets for publishing, marketing, branding, and distribution for music via the web. Because major music labels and Apple’s iTunes are in bed together, artists most certainly must go through major labels for digital distribution. Sure there are other digital distribution options but they all pale in comparison to the number if sales iTunes makes.

Then there is labor politics. Imagine being shelved for 3+yrs. That will KILL YOUR BUZZ. Making matters worse, you can’t leave the label without a fight and the labels are experts at dragging out legal battles for years. By then, your name, and music are nearly forgotten.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/black_coffee_7/ black_coffee_7

Because so may of these artists are being “ripped off” by their record labels, I see why SMART artists either have their PARENTS make sure that the money made goes to the artists or they acquire good legal advise to make sure they get ALL of their money. This is a CUT THROAT business, and you best be ready to shoot from both barrels when it comes to getting paid ALL of the money you have coming to you. I bet MY paycheck, all of this DRAMA is about MONEY!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/demoshe/ demoshe

Dont you think “Jerked” might have been a wrong word for what happened? Lmao

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/swampthing49/ swampthing49

if these so-called hip hoppers or rappers would learn to read and stop play acting as bad-asses and learn to be smart and read the damn contracts or get a damn lawyer maybe then they’ll end up with the money in their pockets and not in others

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jazzwatch/ jazzwatch

Yeah a talented one can and will get screwed… but a uneducated one (I mean the ones who go to school, cut classess, do drugs, get nookie don’t graduate) is lamb meat to the wolves(record producer/owners)……

thats what happened when you dont follow the dumbdown protocol of the industry. go independent like folks in the Bay Area, thats how hip-hop stays relevant in the Bay.

@Gastro_Man you are right… even MEGA-artists like AC/DC to Madonna to Prince has been to war with their labels…

As far as the rap/hip hop side of it, I hate to say it but Gucci and Lil Wayne got it right. You might not like their music, but they laid the blueprint for major label artists to eat and get paid if the label wont drop your album… MIXTAPES.

Most of these major labels artists get these deals and get complacent because the label is supposed to take care of everything but they dont. Its good that you can record a lot of songs but if you cant drop any of the songs thats kind of a mute point. Hell look at B.O.B. I wont say Im one of his biggest fans (I do like some of his stuff), but he stayed dropping mixtapes PLUS he actually had a fan base that pressured Atlantic into giving him that April release date…
