Singer-songwriter The Dream has always been known to keep it all the way real in his interviews. In one with UK’s The Guardian, The Dream might have just set off a firestorm of controversy. The man born Terius Nash told the British publication blacks can’t do soul music anymore because of the world’s fascination with white artists doing soul music.

To support his statement, he made an example out of Adele’s success as a soul artist compared to Beyonce being known for her pop sound. The Dream said, “It’s called rhythm and blues; they just took the blues out of it for so long. What’s crazy is that blacks can’t do soul records any more. We love Adele singing it, but Beyoncé singing it? No.” Nash went on to say, “No, the tempo’s too slow, gimme the club hit. Now the Blacks in America are responsible for the Pop records, and everybody else is singing soulful records. It’s weird to me. We’re pigeonholed over there.”

In a sense, The Dream is right. Soulful albums from Adele and Amy Winehouse sell millions of records in an industry where selling more than 50,000 copies is equivalent to going platinum back in 2000 and black artists are made to be pop singers. Usher and Beyonce both started out as R&B stars and both have abandoned straight up R&B for the greener pastures of pop music. How do we, as consumers, fix this? Sound off in the comments.
