It took him 20 years to address it but MC Hammer actually comes correct when he finally discusses the alleged beef between he and 3rd Bass after their “Gas Face” diss. All you new rappers take note, this is how you handle yourself when someone tries to disrespect you on record.
“The groups I created sold more records than that cat…” – MC Hammer

What Hammer said is whats wrong with rap today. Everybody is worried about record sales an not about actual music. He wants to base the success of his one hit wonder groups on how many records they sold over 3rd Bass. So forget the fact that None of his raps were worth 2 cents an that his whole claim to fame was the fact that he started a dance craze. He found an niche and rode it to success. I’m not made at him for that… but going down as a pioneer RAPPER?… no Entertainer?… absolutely hands down.
The same reason he felt he was so above 3rd bass that he didn’t have to address them is the same reason RUN-DMC didn’t have to address him. He was insignificant an if you went record for record Hammer would have to go back to the studio for another 10 years to get close to the Hits Run-DMC put out.
I liked 3rd Bass they had a couple of good records but they weren’t the brightest an the best to come out of New York but they decide to put out a counter action record and it was successful an for a moment everybody was getting the Gas Face. So it did its job an like another poster said i would listen to Steppin to the A.M or Brooklyn-Queens or Gas Face LONG before I put on anything Hammer put out.
Hammer opened the door for the performance rappers that we see today the Nelly’s, the Vanilla Ice’s, the Soulja Boys’s the artist who’s performance an beats are more of who they are then the actual lyrical content of there music.
3rd Bass was wack, and still is wack, and MC Serch came out a nobody and still is, Hammer made and classic I don’t care about the albums he sold and the money but hammer had better music than them on that first album he made.
What KoolAzzKarl said
Most of the people making posts on this issue don’t really know anything. First off all MC Hammer did make his career by name dropping other artists, he specifically went after the biggest Hip Hop group of all time RUN DMC and taking their fedora hats from them in the video. 3rd Bass, was signed to Def Jam Records, owned by Russell Simmons and from New York. Run DMC never addressed the diss at all, so 3rd Bass picked up the Banner and made one of the best hip hop videos ever for 1989 and addressed more issues in that one song, that Hammer did in an entire career. 3rd Bass made 2 critically accamplaimed hip hop records before Serch got engaged and started a family and started focusing on his life after music bys signing one of the biggest rappers of all time NAS.. Hammer talks about groups selling records, can you name one?? Oaktown 357 put out one record, Yeah Yeah Yeah, and vanished into obscurity, HO Frat Ho.. WTF was that, their record went double lead. 3rd Bass didnt have to sell 18 million records, neither did Eric B. & Rakim, would you say Hammer was better than Rakim?? Hammer didnt address the diss, because the video did a hell of job of dissing him and everyone loved it. He wasnt a lyricist so he wasnt going to get into a LL Cool J/Kool Moe Dee type thing, so he let it ride. RUN DMC could have struck back to outside of Jam Master Jay being in the Gas Face video, but they didnt. I was glad 3rd Bass said something. I would listen to both of their records today before I listen to anything Hammer did.. I encourage the readers to download some of the music and listen to it so you know what was going on before posting.
serch is wackular
i’m glad to see at least someone else remembers “gas face” was a response to hammer coming out the box dissing run-dmc.
as fas as sales goes, britney spears has sold more than bob dylan – which has had a bigger impact on music?
You can’t say some one is a dope lyricist if there is no consistancy to show for it. MC Serch-3rd bass was a one hit wonder, but a hit no less. MC Hammer released a few albums, but lacked lyrical longevity. Hammer is ultimately right in how he dealt with it. No public addresses to boost your career… I’ll bet you he can still bump “Pop Goes the Weasel” laughing on the way to the bank. Hammer had Bently money w/o going at someone he was sure he wouldn’t hear from EVER again!
Hammer wasn’t a wordsmith but he was successful at what he set out to do. He lost it all but that doesn’t discount his accomplishments. I’m from the Bronx and I’m saying f*ck Serch and his corny a**. He just wanted us to accept him by any means. The hood wasn’t f*cking with Hammer but we respected Hammer. Serch didn’t get that. The only white MC who gets the ultimate lyrical respect is Eminem. He’s said petty sh*t like we all have but Em will destroy many mc’s without even having to take off that tight a** Nike cap from breaking a sweat. Don’t worry Hammer, you weathered the storm, we f*ck wit you bruh, LOL!
@YoungCashMoney100
Hammer didn’t always rap about morals and stuff. He started out with songs like “She’s soft and wet” and even signed with Death Row. MC Serch was part of old school Hip-Hop group 3rd Bass, who were white, but dope lyricists. Serch is responsible for introducing the world to Nas. Their beef was before our time, and mostly Hip-Hop heads remember who 3rd Bass is, and nobody remembers Hammer for more than “Can’t Touch This”, his parachute pants, and being a pastor. You may wanna do some research before makin’ statements like that
You people are f**king Idiots why would you even try to diss Hammer. Hammer rapped about morals, intergrity, and making something of yourself nothing that any of the rappers of today rap about. And MCserch is MC who? To tell you the truth noone from the south never even knew who the hell MCserch was but he was bigger than Hammer right? But we as well as the rest of the world knew who hammer was.
HAMMER IS A NOODLE…HE F**KED UP WHEN HE DISSED LL COOL J AND RUN DMC…THT’S WHY THEY MADE GAS FACE AND HE DID TRY TO GO GANGSTA AND ALL….HIS DANCING WAS THE BEST!
HAMMER IS NOT A SELL OUT HE NEVER CLAIMED TO BE A HARDCORE RAPPER HE WAS A ENTERTAINER OUT FOR THAT MONEY AND HE GOT IT, MC SERCH WAS WACK AS HELL VANILLA ICE WAS BETTER THAN THAT FAG.
The definition of a sellout is someone who changes who they are to sell records.
Hammer always made pop rap. Its not like he started out hardcore and THEN made pop.
So how the fck is he a sellout. Dumb azzes
LOL @ “bulls**t lips”.
You know…you cornballs who call Hammer a sellout are f**king MORONS….
I get it…just because the guy doesn’t rap about money, drugs, and a lifestyle everybody KNOWS he doesn’t live like every other rapper, that makes him a sellout?
Because he doesn’t talk about the hood…in fact, because he talks about UPLIFTING the hood…that makes him a sellout…
You clowns are f**king DUMB F**KS who don’t know jack S**T about rap…
How do you cornball asses see Will Smith, LL, Kayne, and EVERY OTHER rapper out there following Hammer’s footsteps then?
How about you dickheads pick up a f**king book instead of talking out your asses about s**t you have no f**king CLUE about…typical “street niggas”….not good for nothing more than running your bulls**t lips all the time…
All of you who applaud Hammer seem to be big hammer fans. but it doesn’t change the fact that Hammer was a sellout that wasn’t a good rapper to begin with. He himself had to recant his profession from rapper to ‘entertainer’. Then he tried to comeback into the rap game as ‘the funky headhunter’ but by that time everyone knew his bull.
Everyone who was dissing Hammer at that time wasn’t because they were totally jealous, but they were not pleased with the direction that Hammer was taking rap. Hammer, who admittedly was the most popular thing at the time since sliced bread, had everyone believing this was todays rap. Better M.C.’s such as too short, and MC Serch wanted the world to know that rap wasn’t anything like this.
Record sales is sometimes an inadequate indicator of how good a rapper is. MC serch had lyrics and a delivery that was better than a lot of rappers during his time, and definitely the best white rapper until Eminem came about. Defnitely better than the lyrics that Hammer spit with ‘can’t touch this’
f**k this broke ass sellout. i notice he’s not going at ice cube for clowning his taco bell parachute pants small dick speedo wearing ass in “stay true to the game”
People really need to put this in its proper context..Search was speaking on how the artform was being diluted by this flashy, dancing, non lyrical style…Hammer was also dissed by Too Short as well…this was a battle of ideals…records sold had nothing to do with it..Hammer’s fans were not true hip hop heads and at that time no hip hop artist was selling..The beef Search and all others had with hammer was that he was trying to portray himself as a Hip Hop artist which he clearly was not…he was a hell of a performer though!! lyrically, Hammer and all those groups he put out, couldn’t touch Search!!!
Real talk, Serch was nice on the mic but Hammer has the numbers!
I have always been a fan of Hammer. The funny thing is that back in the day when he was the hottest thing going rappers like McSerch used to always call him a sellout because he did commercials.
A lot of them started doing the same thing. I guess they weren’t sellouts. WHAT A BUNCH OF HYPOCRITES!
Hammer paved the way because virtually all of the top rappers of the past 20 years have done or are continuing to do both commercials and movies.
I know this concept is foreign to rappers today but for those that aren`t familiar, this is called “taking the higher road”.Hammer could have went off and badmouthed 3Rd Base and gave the media a bone to gnaw(they were bastards then like they are bastards now) but when you allow what others say to influence your temprament you give them control over you. Especially when they fizzled out loooong before Hammer
I remember the first time I saw a M.C. Hammer video. It was like watching James Brown on speed with a Las Vegas revue on the fourth of July. We talkin POW! BANG! BOOM! He had the dancers, background singers, musicians the works!
I don`t think Hammer burned out. He came out so fast and hit em so hard he out did himself and his career stalemated. But thanks to the ingenuity of reality television we are blessed to see him in the public eye.
Hammer don`t hurt em!
P.S. If you listen closely who ever was interviewing him really didn`t want to ask him about the diss. He sounded like he was apologizing before Hammer could comment.
