OP-ED: How Did The “Hater” Kill Hip-Hop?!
My boy Andreas Hale over at BET wrote this hilarious rant that some of you haters on Blackplanet need to check out. Next time you say, “This is not news,” or “Why did you write about this stuff?” – not realizing that this is an entertainment site, then this rant applies to YOU.

HATER.
It is, hands down, the worst word ever invented. Maybe, just maybe, somebody doesn’t actually like the something. God forbid that an individual has his/her own opinion. I’m not a big fan of Salmon. Does that make me a Salmon hater? I prefer the blackberry over the iPhone. Am I a iPhone hater now? If I had to choose, I’d pick LeBron over Kobe. Oh no…now I’m hating on Kobe Bryant right?
This label really sucks. Really it does.
And it has single handedly ruined the quality of our music.
Because of the word hater, an individual isn’t allowed to disagree with anything anymore. Allow me to treat you to some examples.
“I don’t like that song.”
“You a hater!”
“I don’t think you can buy a $2 burger with $1.22 in your pocket…”
“You a hater!!”
“You can’t get a job as a pathologist if you don’t finish 10th grade.”
“You a hater!!!”
“Damn man! You stink because you haven’t showered in 8 ½ days!”
“You a hater!!!!”
Even the most logical thing can be described as hating. It’s actually sickening to see how hating can relate to everything from musical taste to downright ridiculous thing such as having champagne taste with MD 20/20 or 40oz. with Old English pockets.
Never has there been a word that effortlessly shifts the blame to the person asked of their honest opinion. I’ve seen several situations firsthand where the critic was actually made perfect sense but was ridiculed so bad, he all of a sudden became the bad guy.
The truth of the matter is that if everyone would quit being scared of being labeled as a hater and would just be honest, Hip Hop would be in a better place.
If people said how they honestly felt about songs and artists, they wouldn’t be able use this bailout terminology to replace the blame for making a craptastic song. Perhaps good music would prevail.
It’s okay to tell someone that something sucks – maybe not in those terms but you get the gist. It’s equally okay for someone to genuinely not like something. If I’m not mistaken, we are individuals with our own minds right?
Maybe MC Rappidy Rap would dig a little deeper to make better music. Maybe the junk that ends up being released would never see the light of day.
Our standards have truly sunk to depths beyond the naked eye.
And we only have ourselves to blame.
So what I’m telling you is to embrace the word hater just like corny white folks embraced Hip Hop terms like “Fa Shizzle” and “Da Bomb.” Soon enough, it won’t be cool to call someone a hater anymore. It may actually become vomit inducing.
Truthfully…
The Hater Killed Hip Hop.
But what the hell do I know? I’m just a hater.
“If I don’t like it, I don’t like it. That don’t mean that I’m hating.” © Common.

« Previous 1 2 3Excellent article
Lol I agree 100%
I was almost on the side of this article…almost.
The term “hater” goes a lot further than liquor comparisons- I’ve heard it stretch over into political disagreements as well.
The article lost me after the examples. “Hater” allows the quick responses to disagreement because there is so much intollerance to EVEN LISTEN to the other. No one even wants to listen… so these quick “cotton candy” fit RIGHT in with our fast-paced lifestyles.
I did like the term “bailout terminology” but it was shamefully wasted on a term like “hater.” The same people who holler “hater” in an instant are kin to the people who would yell out a term like “racism” every time there was a disagreement with someone of another race.
You talk about the “state of hip hop” as if it’s on life support or needing reviving, but you fail mention the differences that fall under the term “hip-hop” like music for the youth in their SouljaBoy and OJ down to swag rappers like Jay-Z and Wayne all the way to conscious rappers like Nas, Common, Kweli, etc.
Good concept- Poor execution;
go ahead and say it….
Good article. But for my opinion the word hater didn’t kill Hip-Hop is was the corporate world who got control of it and did whatever they wanted to have the music watered down. For the most part of the term hater is misconstrued cuz itz only used in terms for somebody else doing better than the other and can’t face the fact that he/she is still sitting on their ass doing s**t!!! And when a rapper gets accused of being wack he hides behind the term hating….but the real term for a wack rapper is “constructive criticism” a difference lol.
The article is on point, now if I can just get my 18 yr old to stop saying “thingy.” Imagine if Lauren Hill sang the song “that Thingy, that thingy..that thiiingy” See it just doesn’t work.
Djazz is right, so is the writer
I agree with the article, but I want to add sumthing else…In my opinion, this is the same as peer-pressure and “sticks and stones”…ppl use “hater” as a persuasive method…Don’t waiver on your opinion and shrug dem haters off…If you agree that you are “hating”, show them that you don’t give a f**k that your “hating”, and stick to your personal opinion then the value of the term “hater” drops!
…the word HATER did’nt kill hip hop ..its time for it to die and we just wont let hip hop DIE..its time is over…put the dirt on it..say a prayer and walk away
some of us were never affected by the word..but the numbers are so small it couldnt affect what was being played on the radio ,said on TV,videos,clubs.etc. MONEY is bigger than the word hater ..the lawyers that run showbiz !! believe in cookie cutter music..everything has a place but when it shows that big money is to be made..place go’s out the window..we exhaust the talent until it is no more because of money.. every era of showbiz has done it ..greed created the word hater ..when some of us started saying what we didnt like..others were try to justify
a crappy song or video, tv show
etc..so we understand that people dont want tastful anymore because it doesnt sell..crap does !!!! so we silenced critics who know the truth by using the word HATER………
Good article very timely. Thank God the vast majority of the commenters agreed with the article. There are some good positive rappers out there, they just don’t get air time. The Stepin Fetchit’s are the only ones that get played on the radio. That’s ass backwords.
I must say music now days is just ridiculous. Anytime you come out with a song call “Do The Halle Berry” you know the music industry is over.
ok…my bad. but actually stupid sayings or rappers don’t kill hip hop. stupid consumers do. if noone liked stupidity, stupid words, slogans, mannerisms, trends, fads, ideals….all that wouldn’t be so grand. shake that booty meat would never be embraced… so hating, haters, snitches, doughboys, bangin, poppin bottles, ridin 20+ inch rims, candy paint, big goofy a$$ shades, sleeping with 20 women a night, prostitution (for the female rappers who claim they coochie is worth at least a bently…you know who u r), beef, shoes, jewelry, etc…all this the good and the bad came to be because of the consumer embracing it. not necessarily because it is the most positive or intellectual idea. hip hop has an ever changing market…and fan base…and it doesn’t seem to be hitting the more intellectuals…so you can want for that as much as you like, or you can find your favorite artists and bump them and ignore the ‘hating’ rappers. but hip hop doesn’t change until the people who listen to hip hop change it. so stop hating.
wait…hold up….why you hatin on MD 20/20??? YOU A HATER!
I think we should start a petition to ban that word
Oh wow.. I had this EXACT thought yesterday, sitting in my bed thinking.. f**k, the word hater just empowers f**king losers and makes them think whatever it is they’re doing is right and everyone is wrong.. thats SO weird that someone wrote this the next day.. I was even thinking, someone needs to WRITE a piece on this! THANK YOU!
I have to agree. People got to crazy with using the word hater when someone says they are not into something. No wonder there is a whole bunch of crap out there. You cant say its bad or horrible without someone saying you are a hater.
Its funny cause its true. I told somebody about the particular artist and the ones that would perfer not to listen to, and I’m hatin one them cause I don’t like them. No nigga I;m not hatin one nobody I just like good music. And a hot line shouldnt be a hot song no matter who you are. And at the rate hip hop is ging now Ima make my some daamn money all you need is a hot bet and a stupid dance an boom instant millionare…
Why do we WORSHIP celeberties anyway?
We pay all their bills, we buy ALL THEIR ICE, we purchase THEIR CARS for them….all just to listen to their crappy music, watch their crappy movies, and crappy comercials…and yet we JUMP to their defense when a person voices an opinion…
Hell I like 2PAC…love his music and his messages, but if someone chooses BIGGIE over PAC its no sweat off my back cause neither of them niggas would have cared if I LIVED or DIED…
so why do we worship celeberties..?
WHY?
They could give less than a f**k about US…
And dont gimme that bulls**t about “THEY LOVE AND APRECIATE THEIR FANS”..
BULLS**T….if you loved and appreciated your fans you would IGNORE YOUR RECORD LABEL’s rules and regulations and give your FANS the type of music they request….
The only reason these rappers/singers are so WACK is because of who they are SIGNED with…they are RECORD LABEL W***ES who bow down to their masters…they are so GREEDY they take the money up front like F**KIN IDIOTS and then realize they have no say so over their own f**kin MUSIC! Instead of workin a steady job and waitin patiently for albums to SELL….NOPE…they got that “HUNGRY” syndrome…takin ADVANCE MONEY up front and givin “US” the fans crappy music….
which when we COMPLAIN….we are labeled…”HATERS”….
WOW….again, why do we even worship celeberties in the 1st f**kin place..!!
Yo, I got “hated” on last week on this site by some damn Kanye West dick sucka, I mean dude clownin’ me just because I worte what I think dude’s new book gon’ be about. I mean, I’m just voicin’ my ideas, if you don’t agree-don’t response- that simple. But some people feel that when they “stand” up for some star a*****e that don’t even know they exist, ain’t payin’ they’re bills, nothing- to another person, that they protectin’ that nigga’s honor WTF?!!
Whoever wrote this is on point! this article couldn’t have come at a better time on this site.
This very topic was realized for me during the R. Kelly sex scandal. I vividly remember him saying “to all the haters…” I’m DEFINITELY hatin on ANYONE having sex with an underage girl. It appears our vanity as Black folk cant take the hit for standing up for something…sad that we come from the 60`s and 70’s shining the light on everyone elses evils, now we cant even speak to our own…
man f**k lil wayne
quit hatin…lol
I feel you-in the context of which the article was written only. But in reality sometimes some people need to get hated on. I’ll claim being a hater but not like those in the article. hell i even got it on my plates!
I hate from the heart- there is such a thing. Sometimes puting sm1 on blast is the key. I put my neighbor on blast for not keepin an eye on her kids, trickin’, and then frontin’ like shes a church lady when she wants sm1 to watch them in 1 swoop.
I have more like that, but the point being: sometimes hatin’ can actually raise the level of moral or efforts people put into a thing. Only warning to this style of hatin’ is that every now and then one may have to physically help not just talk sh*t!
Oh yeah and ladies…hate that rude guy out yo face in the club when he won’t stop, the embarassment will ususally send him and his lame friends away.
Oh yeah can anybody tell if I’m a hater. And I’m doin it with a smile.
