OPINION: Drake, What The Hell Were You Thinking?
Dear Drake,
Congratulations on signing a deal with Universal, but I’m not sure why you signed a deal with a label when you had the number 3 song on iTunes. You’re a talented guy who can write, sing, rap and have already had an acting career but I think you are starting things off on the wrong foot.
One thing I don’t understand is why you signed to Lil Wayne’s label. Lil Wayne is a prescription cough syrup-drinking, Blood gang-promoting, weapon-packing, pseudo gangsta rapper. While Wayne was brought up in one of the roughest projects in America and taken in by an ex con who brought him into the rap world, you were brought up in one of the nicest neighborhoods in Toronto, Canada by a wealthy Jewish woman and went to a prestigious private school. While Lil Wayne might have to use that tired “blame it on my environment excuse” to justify his violent and misogynist lyrics, you can’t say the same thing.
I used to watch the old Degrassi show before Wheels and Spike were parents. Degrassi is a good show for teenagers, which deals with real issues and you were great as Jimmy Brooks. No one ever caught gonorrhea on “Saved by the Bell” and I don’t think Hannah Montana was ever a victim of a school shooting like your character Jimmy was. You have a lot of teenage fans left over from that show that look up to you. Your character even stood up to anti gay bullies. Hanging with Lil Weezy and his ignorant negative music can only be confusing for the many teenagers who looked up to you as the nice, likable kid in a wheelchair.
Drake I’ll admit that I love your “Best I Ever Had” song because it’s a nice blend of melody, rapping and real hip-hop. But what the hell was up with the video? You could’ve made it a classic love song video but you turned into a Video Vixen vs WNBA song. You made a song in the line of Method Man’s “All I Need” or “LL’s I need Love” but made it a regular hip-hop video s(ho)wcase. Please, shoot another video for “Best I Ever Had.”
Also, what the hell were you thinking when you joined Lil Wayne and a bunch of 12-year-old girls onstage at the BET Awards? Maybe you should have titled it “I Wanna to Fuck Every Lil Girl in The World” because a lot of people are taking that performance the wrong way. With all the hype surrounding your music you have the power to bring hip hop back, not continue its downward spiral.
Along with great talent comes great responsibility. I know jumping on Lil Wayne’s bandwagon may be the quickest way for you to be successful but it can only hurt your artistry and long-term career.
The world is in your hands so don’t try and be a gangsta. People have got the Degrassi tapes.
Drake, don’t let the game change you, change the game.
Sincerely,
Casey Gane-McCalla

« Previous 1 2i agree with the writer up to the point of saying that lil wayne grew up in the heart of the hood. he actually grew up around the corner from where i grew up in the semi suburbs in michoud. it wasnt doonesbury but it wasnt the hood by far. the street was called Voyageur Court. look it up.
ok ok he should of just got his on label deal with wayne.just young money/ universal.not young money, cash money universal.that’s 3 companies that gets paid before him. they could of got a bigger deal as a major label.young money could of got a 100 million dollar deal like no limit. but they signed 2 cash money.baby and slim stole the golden egg.they could of had 2 major companies in stead of 1 cash money.is lil wayne afraid 2 be the #1 boss aka #1 STUNNA
This was a dumbass letter. 1st off the problem with this society is that we consider celebrities role models when they really aren’t parents are and should always be the role models of their children. Plus that nice likeable kid in a wheelchair didn’t exist since it was a fictional character and kids need to be able to distinguish fact from fiction so they don’t try to use fiction points in an argument based on facts. Unlike the author of this letter.
Second why the hell wouldn’t he sign to Young Money that’s like not wanting to be apart of G-Unit in 04 they’re hot right now and Lil Wayne will get you a buzz…how the f**k do you think he got here in the 1st place. I only listened to brand new cause weezy had a verse on the remix and I was like yo dude can sing who is this?
I really hope this was written by a 9th or 10th grader rather than an adult.
You foolish Ass Kids today need to think Pac and Biggie. I’m a F**kin thoroughbread but I ain’t wit the Black on Black S**t! It’s all Black now, At least we have an oportunity to make it that! Smoke on nat!!!! In Real Life!
F**kz Dat! Get cha Money man, Trust,What lil weezy can’t recruit a Real Artist! The kids waaay before his time and he’s linking with a different style of entertainment, What’s the Bug Deal! Drake obviously feels the truth in the matter if he’s now signed to Universal! He want’s the Money, Car’s & the Clothes! At least he has the raw gut to be able to tell you what’s exactly on his mind! He wants to be successful. Now who could be mad at him for that? Look, Drake, Don’t bow down to the industry and media Bulls**t! Your on the right path, Thank God and your support staff! F**k the rest!
I agree with Casey in that Drake should not have signed with Lil Wayne’s label. But I disagree with his level of rap talent..dude, he aint all that! in fact in many ways he sounds a lil “waynish” to me. Im not seeing his own identity. His performance on Bet’s ‘09 awards show was not at all impressive. he appeared to be more of an entourage act than a seperate identity. As far as Lil Wayne goes, before he went commercial, his underground shyt was hot! though Im not a HUGE fan, I used to dig the underground Wayne now, he’s all synthesized out just like all the others…Kanye, snoop, and more. Here’s a thought: REAL ASS RAPPERS PLEASE STAND UP..LEAVE THE SINGING TO MUSIQ SOULCHILD OR MAXWELL.
Also Drake didn’t even direct his Music video. That was Kanye’s doing.
Man whatever.
First of All a star or artist isn’t a super model and is not someone to mold your life around.
Second I listen to Wayne and I’ve watched degrassi since I turned 13 (I’m 18 now). I’m level headed enough to not let my music dictate my life.
If your kid can’t tell the difference be reality and fiction then you failed as a parent. Every single one of parents posting on here looking down or Wayne and Drake. You’re the parents that will most likely have the kid listening to Wayne. Also I’m sure 99% of you haven’t even listened to him because for the most part his music is tame and his lyrics aren’t bad at all.
Hell to call him a “Misogynist” would be a gross overstatement. Leave the kid alone if it weren’t for Wayne he wouldn’t have half the buzz he does. Since Wayne co-signed him he gots a huge flood of fans. Without that attention he would be just another new comer.
Yeah, what Ms. Gane-McCalla said. Doesn’t a repeat, just a “ditto”. Good luck, but my daughter won’t be connecting with your music for a while (becomes an adult), because I have a feeling you signed w/ Lil Wayne to get some “edge” into your music. He’s not the man to go to, to find it and he’s not going places you really should be going to expand your horizons. “Q” would have been a better place.
In my opinion, I wouldn’t pay s**t out my pocket to buy a drake or lil wayne album. the standard is gone, in the rap industry, these two have no skills, when I buy a rap record, it’s either q-tip,Lupe fiasco, and boogie down productions, and a little kanye from time to time. wayne was wack when he first came out with the block is hot! he ain’t s**t he just made a comeback on cashmoney records in 05″ because the rest of the cashmoney records crew is either Dead (soljaslim) or in jail(c-murder), or lost everything to katrina.Birdman lost everything in katrina that why wayne made a comback he was the record companies last hope. and now I don’t think birdman is ever gonna recover from that.
I didn’t know who this guy was until the BET awards. I must say I was utterly disgusted by the display of child pornography (yes I said it) on the stage. The producers of BET should have known what he was going to do in his performance, so for them to let that go on is beyond me. I don’t listen to much of the radio anymore because there is nothing on that is original or even the least bit artistic or lyrical. As far as I’m concerned, hip hop died when 2Pac and Biggie died, and there hasn’t really been anything good since then. Granted there are a few standouts, but nothing spectacular. So for the record, Lil Wayne sucks, and Drake sucks for signing with him. I hope parents will be parents again and not buy this crap for their kids, and stop giving them money to get it themselves. Be role models yourselves and stop going to the club every chance you get and not spending time with them. That way they don’t end up on display at a very distasteful awards show in the future. Thanks for reading, and keep it 100!
Black people always ready to follow instead of being a leader. I didn’t understand why he signed with lil wayne too and I’m tired of hearing about LIL WAYNE IS THE BEST RAPPER WHEN HE’S NOT WITH HIS DUMB, MARKED UP BODY, DRUG ADDICT, HAVING TWO BABIES AT THE SAME TIME ASS! God please come and get your people fast because we are lost!
AngelEyes, NO YOU’RE STUPID and this article is dead on point. You young cats are so used to listening to all this garbage played on the radio that you don’t understand this article! I TOTALLY agree with everything in this article. He was doing all the right things INDEPENDENTLY, he didn’t need Wayne! Those lil girls on stage while singin F**K EVERY GIRL IN THE WORLD was distastful!
I really think this article is stupid and pointless. How you gone degrade somebody just because he signed with one of the greatest rappers around. Lil Wayne don’t make Drake he just signed with him. Obviously you don’t know your facts and you don’t know much of nothing so really you need to write an article about something you know facts about not opinions that are false.
Who the hell is Blake? That’s all i want to know. The article was about Drake so this for the person who left there comment talking about people on here is spelling and typing like first graders should get there info straight before they talk about someone else.
Wow I never thought of it that way but I totally agree. He should use he talent to change the game not follow the crowd.
whether those were Wayne’s daughter’s friends, BET didnt approve of it either in those outfits dancing up there and took it out of the show.
He can change the face of music.
Drake is looking at Wayne like his mentor, and he’s a singing light-skinned version of him.
WHY IS IT THAT THE CHIC WHO WROTE THIS IS WHITE AND MOST OF THE BAD COMMENTS SPOKEN HERE SEEM TO BE FROM WHITE PEOPLE? GET YO FACTS STAIGHT, LIL WAYNE HAD HIS DAUGHTER AND HER FRIENDS ON STAGE WIT HIM FIRST OF ALL AS HE DO WHEN HE ACCEPTS AWARDS. SECOND DRAKE DID A GOOD THANG WHEN HE SIGNED WIT LIL WAYNE CUZ THE BOYS PAID SO DRAKE NEW WAT HE WAS DOING. FURTHERMORE DRAKE IS NOT A LIL BOY ON THAT DUM ASS SHOW DAGRASSI WHICH ONLY SHOWS HOW ALL THE DUM WHITE KIDS IN THEIR SO CALLED SURBURBAN NEIGHBORHOODS ARE EXPOSED (AND YAL THINK THE BLACK HOODS ARE BAD!) STOP ALL YAL HATING ON LIL WAYNE CUZ AINT NONE OF YAL PAID LIKE HIM AND NEVA WILL BE! AS FOR DRAKE KEEP DOING YO THING MAN YOUR SONG “BEST I EVER HAD” IS TIGHT PIMPIN!
I think it was a cool move for Drizzy Drake. He doesn’t want to be seen as the Dagrassi High kid “Jimmy” anymore……And truth be told, you can’t fault him for linking up with Wayne when Wayne seems to know what he is doing. Tons of acts have signed to tons of “nice” labels and went knowhere. Let the kid grow!!
This is hilarious and so true. Poor Blake. I hope he wakes up.
And some of you people on here need to get hooked on phonics, seriously. There is NO reason to be spelling and typing like first graders. Our school system has failed us….
drake is so over rated
get ya facts striaght wayne and gillie threw disses at this kid on the cut ransom saying “heartbreak drake i hate to see him so sad, i ca son you see a little me in your dad.” and wayne goes even further yet. still i’m sure that drake had his reasons for signing with a label that vebally dissed him and those reasons will be called into question when the smoke clears, after all some people lead others are lead. drake seems he need to follow behind someone he chose wayne ( poor choice you ask me) and so it is. only time will tell how that relationship goes, till then keep ya head up yet ears to the streets
MY BAD DAT WUZ 4 ANNOYEDASHELL AN I FEEL DAT NU-GEN
ALL U PEOPLES ON HERE PROBABLY BROKE IS HELL? U TALK LIKE DAT BUT THINK U COULD RAP? GET DA FUK OUTA HERE AN TAKE YO DUMB ASS 2 SKOOL! AN JUS CUZ U BROKE DON MEAM ERBODY IZ! LMMFAO
first off u kan’t hate on lil’wayne beckause all u people’s on here probably is Broke. i ain’t trying 2 take up 4 tha nigga beckause he ain’t all that, i’m a girl and i kan probably flow better then him, but all i’m sayin is he’s still making money out tha ass!
