I grew up in the hood, played the violin since age 9 (I’m 27), listen daily to gospel, r&b, classical, jazz, hip-hop (including Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Outkast, and ALL the old school hip hop I grew up with -Nice n Smooth, Black Sheep, etc), country and alternative rock. I scored over an 1100 on my SATs (back when they only went up to 1600) and have gone to a state school, then to an HBCU (two schools with EXTREMELY varying SAT/ACT averages).

I am an extremely intelligent person, in fact, the reason I listen to virutally every genre of music is because I’m smart enough to realize there’s validity, relevance, and significance in EVERY art form! ***ART IMITATES LIFE IMITATES ART*** This assessment means absolutely nothing to me.

So, does the fact that the majority of hip hop is purchased by white, suburban kids fit anywhere in his equation??? Your life experiences (first hand or vicarious experiences), your personality, and your lifestyle dictate what music (or ANY art for that matter) you gravitate to.

I am a lover of all kinds of music and I am a product of the hip hop generation, so there will always be a love for hip-hop music, no matter what. I have become disenchanted with hip-hop in more recent years because it seems to have lost it creativity and message. I must admit, I am not a hardcore Lil Wayne fan, I just bought his latest CD a few weeks ago, I just didn’t and still don’t think he’s truly creative, but I am open minded enough to listen to him and I can respect the beats he creates. I told my nephew, who happened s to go to one of the school ranked near the very bottom of this list, just yesterday, “If I try to listen to artist like Lil Wayne, but more specific Soulja Boy for any lyrical substance, I feel like I will bust some brain cells, because there is no message to the music”, funny thing is he agreed. Saying that music can “make you dumb” would be synonymous with stating that video games “makes you kill people”. Who’s to say that these people who listen to Lil Wayne and happen to score low on the SAT/ACT exams dont also listen to Beethoven? Or vice versa for that matter? This study is racist. How can you say that if you listen to lil wayne you have low test scores? I listen to a variety of music that does include classical, traditional belly dance, the gypsy kings, Sergio mendes, banchata, reggae, reggaton, rap and I could go on and on about the different variety of music that I am exposed to. BUT I have and do listen to lil wayne from time to time, but that doesn’t mean because I have been exposed to him I am going to be less intelligent. I have a degreen in African and African American studies, and I have study the literature and music throught the history of black people, and I will continue to say that there is not other type of music like black people music that combines and uses a different mixtures of sounds and influences. I have found no other music like it else where, unless they have been exposed to black people. So what about the millions of whites who are buying LIL waynes music?
